The Media's Misleading Math on Biden's Border Crisis

Border crossings are down—if you compare them with all-time highs achieved under this administration

May 16, 2023

With Title 42, a Trump-era immigration policy that allowed for the quick expulsion of illegal migrants, expiring at the end of last week, the U.S. southern border is embroiled in crisis. But after a week of reporting on the evolving humanitarian disaster, the corporate press is cutting the Biden administration some slack.

So what: President Joe Biden is underwater among voters on ending Title 42, and the border continues to be a polling weakness. But the media may be helping to bail him out.

Reporters caught up with Biden about his border crisis while he was out for a weekend bike ride in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and he was feeling good enough to gloat.

The press has largely shifted its framing of the story to fit Biden's, noting that border encounters were down to 6,300 on Friday and 4,200 on Saturday, according to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

OK, but: The supposedly encouraging decline in border encounters was relative to all-time highs earlier in the week. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday each saw more than 10,000 migrant apprehensions, surpassing any previous day on record. Even with the downticks on Friday and Saturday, last week's numbers shattered the previous weekly high.

Illegal immigration has repeatedly broken annual records on Biden's watch.

Now, border towns have thousands of people sleeping on the street, and self-proclaimed "sanctuary cities" for illegal immigrants, such as New YorkWashington, D.C., and Chicago, have declared they're full up. About 24,000 migrants were reportedly held overnight Thursday in border detention facilities made for 18,000 at the most. A 17-year-old unaccompanied migrant from Honduras died Wednesday after being found unconscious in a Florida shelter, though officials haven't released information about the cause of death.

As some news outlets noted, the easing of the crisis could prove short-lived. In a court filing on Friday, Biden's deputy Border Patrol chief, Matthew Hudak, said that between 12,000 and 14,000 apprehensions are still expected per day as a result of the end of Title 42.

Another line they cut into: Illegals get free public housing as impoverished Americans wait

Want some perspective on why so many blue sanctuary cities have so many homeless encampments hovering around?

Try the reality that illegal immigrants are routinely given free public housing by the U.S., based on the fact that they are uneducated, unskilled, and largely unemployable. Those are the criteria, and now importing poverty has never been easier. Shockingly, this comes as millions of poor Americans are out in the cold awaiting that housing that the original law was intended to help.

Thus, the tent cities, and by coincidence, the worst of these emerging shantytowns are in blue sanctuary cities loaded with illegal immigrants - Orange County, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, New York...Is there a connection? At a minimum, it's worth looking at.                           MONICA SHOWALTER

J.D. Vance: GOP Must Call Out Illegal Immigration as ‘Economic Warfare’ Against Working Americans

The Biden Administration's Newspeak on the Border

The end of Title 42 brought a record number of migrants to the southern border, including an Afghan terrorist caught trying to sneak into California and a child who died in the custody of Health and Human Services—the second minor who has perished on the Biden administration's watch.

Sounds like a humanitarian tragedy, a policy disaster, a political nightmare. But not if you hear the Biden administration tell it! Speaking at a swanky fundraiser in Atlanta on Friday as this scene was playing out, Vice President Kamala Harris—President Joe Biden named her border czar, remember?—declared that things down south are "going rather smoothly."

We'd hate to hear what "bumpy" looks like. President Biden, meanwhile—he's on vacation in Rehoboth Beach—said that things at the border are going "much better than you all expected." Low bar.

Elections have consequences, and the situation on the southern border is a direct result of policies Biden and Harris put in place on their first day in office. Border wall construction came to a halt, and among other things the Biden administration put an end to the "Remain in Mexico" policy that required asylum seekers to wait in a third country until their claims were adjudicated.

Our colleague Joe Simonson was in the border city of Brownsville, Texas, last week, and he saw the situation firsthand. Some holding facilities reached more than 200 percent capacity over the weekend. Conditions in at least one of those facilities was so poor that a 17-year-old child from Honduras died, and the Biden administration has cut most of the migrants loose. It's the administration's only answer.

Even Democrats are starting to notice. New York City mayor Eric Adams—who once said that "New York City is, and has always been, a city of immigrants" and pledged that his government would "reflect that"—now says there is "no room" in his city for migrants.

Adams is converting public school gyms and shuttered prisons into shelters for aliens arriving by the hundreds. "No city should be going through this," Adams said.

No country should, either.

Newly sworn-in Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) welcomed border crossers and illegal aliens to the sanctuary city in his inaugural address on Monday just as black Chicagoans protest illegal immigration flooding their neighborhoods.

Since August 2022, thousands of border crossers and illegal aliens have inundated Chicago — many arriving with illnesses like COVID-19 and without any ties to the city — spurring former Mayor Lori Lightfoot to declare a state of emergency last week.

Already, Chicago officials have opened police stations and abandoned schools to border crossers and illegal aliens, paid for by local taxpayers. Despite Lightfoot saying the city is at a “breaking point,” Johnson said there is more than enough room for border crossers and illegal aliens.

“We don’t want our story to be told that we were unable to house the unhoused or provide safe harbor for those who are seeking refuge here because enough room for everyone in the city of Chicago, whether you are seeking asylum or you are looking for a fully funded neighborhood,” Johnson said in his address.

The remarks sharply break from black Chicagoans who wield significant political power. Late last week, many attended a town hall meeting at the former South Shore High School where city officials want to house potentially hundreds of migrants.

“Looking at the numbers coming out of city hall and the state of Illinois, upwards of $150 million for six months,” one resident explained:

We believe that $150 million would have been, in some way, eligible to come into our community to help our crime problem, help our economic problem, and help with our housing issues. And as we’re all aware, black people are the largest number of homeless in Chicago so if you’re going to help anyone, help the current black homeless first. [Emphasis added]

At the town hall, one black Chicagoan held a sign that read “BUILD THE WALL 2024,” a sign of support for closing the United States-Mexico border to illegal immigration rather than President Joe Biden’s current approach of releasing tens of thousands of border crossers and illegal aliens into American communities every month.

Chicago residents are so fed up with illegal immigration that a group has filed a lawsuit against the city to stop them from housing border crossers and illegal aliens in the South Shore neighborhood.

“It is a slap in the face that we as citizens of the United States of America do not have the resources and support but you’re going to bring people who are not citizens here in our community, in our buildings that we pay taxes for that you took away from us,” one Chicago resident told local media.

“… at the end of the day, if Chicago can’t take care of its own, why should they take care of others? If the resources are given to others, why can’t the resources be given to us?” another Chicago resident asked.

Exclusive – J.D. Vance: GOP Must Call Out Illegal Immigration as ‘Economic Warfare’ Against Working Americans

Republicans must be “hammering” away at illegal immigration as “economic warfare” against working- and middle-class Americans, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) told Breitbart News.

In an exclusive interview with SiriusXM Patriot’s Breitbart News Saturday, Vance called on Republicans to discuss illegal immigration as a fixture of “the cheap labor lobby” which seeks to inflate the United States labor market to drive down wages and employ an underclass of cheaper foreign workers with little-to-no bargaining power.

LISTEN:

“Republicans cannot stop hammering this stuff … we cannot ignore the cheap labor lobby is why we have this problem,” Vance said of the surge of illegal immigration that has occurred on Biden’s watch.

In addition to driving down wages and increasing foreign competition against Americans in the labor market, Vance said illegal immigration has a huge impact on housing prices as more demand means higher costs and bigger payouts for real estate developers and landlords.

“Think of the effects that this has on working Americans’ wages to have 10 million more people who shouldn’t be here competing for jobs,” Vance said. “Think about what this does for housing prices, when you have to house 10 million people that shouldn’t be here, that drives up the costs of housing when interest rates are already through the roof.”

“This is economic warfare and theft of the American dream from American citizens, that is the big problem here and that’s why we have to keep fighting it,” he continued.

Vance echoed that sentiment during an interview with Breitbart News Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow on the Charlie Kirk Show, detailing how Americans looking to buy their first home or move into a new property are put at a disadvantage as they are forced to compete for housing against a growing foreign population.

LISTEN:

“If you’ve gone to a hospital or emergency room and you’ve seen the wait times be way too long because there are a number of illegal aliens getting healthcare, you’re seeing the effects of Ohio being a border state,” Vance said.

“If you’ve tried to buy a house and you’ve seen the effects of skyrocketing housing costs and interest rates, you’re seeing the effects of Ohio as a border state because when you bring in 10 million people illegally, you’ve got to house them somewhere, and houses that should go to American citizens right now are going to people who should not be here in the first place,” he continued.

Vance said President Joe Biden and his Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas are “not even hiding” their intended goal anymore, noting remarks made last week where the agency head seemingly admitted that illegal immigration is a boon for business.

Meanwhile, labor market data has shown that Biden is growing the U.S. workforce by funneling millions of border crossers, illegal aliens, foreign visa workers, and legal immigrants into American jobs, while leaving millions of working- and middle-class Americans on the sidelines.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, for example, close to two million fewer native-born Americans were working in jobs compared to the same time in 2019, while two million foreign-born workers were added to the workforce.

A flooded labor market from mass immigration has had a devastating impact on working- and middle-class Americans, while redistributing billions in wealth to the top one percent of earners and big business. While creating an economy that tilts in favor of employers, the mass immigration economic model has helped keep wages stagnant for decades.

AZ State Senator: If Illegal Immigrants Keep Coming, We’ll Keep ‘Moving Them on Out...to a Town Near You’

If U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) can’t control the surge of illegal immigrants coming into his state when the Title 42 border-enforcement measure ends Thursday, Arizona will use its own buses to ship them “to a town near you,” State Sen. Tim Dunn (R-Ariz.) warns.

Sen. Dunn was one of three state legislators who discussed the border crisis Thursday on Fox & Friends First, where he explained that his state will use its own buses to relocate the illegal immigrants out of his overburdened state:

“We’ve already been inundated for the last three and a half years, so we are at our wit’s end, we are at capacity on our NGOs. And so, we are working together with the governor and with our local BPS just to try to mitigate the situation the best we can and keep processing and moving them out of our state, because we cannot handle them here in the state.

“And, we’re going to keep sending them with our own buses, if the CBP can’t control it, and moving them on out of the state to a town near you.”

“Every state is a border crisis,” New Hampshire State Sen. Jeb Bradley (R) concurred, citing the influx of deadly drugs and human traffickers coming in from neighboring Canada.

“What we’re trying to here, as state legislators, is maximize every tool at our resource,” Florida State Rep. Jon Snyder (R) added, promising that his state will continue to send illegal immigrants to the so-called “sanctuary cities” that claim they want to take them in and use taxpayers’ money to support them:

“We are going to continue to make sure that, if migrants come into our state, we will send them to the sanctuary cites that have given them pre-consent to come and live off of their taxpayers, and not ours.”

Nolte: Punk Legend Johnny Rotten Sounds Alarm over L.A. Homeless Epidemic

JOHN NOLTE

Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten isn’t afraid to buck the establishment and sound the alarm over L.A.’s homeless epidemic, which has literally landed at his front door.

The 63-year-old lives in Venice Beach where there has been a surge of homeless vagrants that have vandalized his multi-million dollar home and spoiled the beaches with “poo” and “needles.”

“A couple of weeks ago I had a problem,” he said. “They came over the gate and put their tent inside, right in front of the front door. It’s like . . . the audacity. And if you complain, what are you? Oh, one of the establishment elite? No, I’m a bloke that’s worked hard for his money and I expect to be able to use my own front door.”

He added that his wife Nora, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, isn’t able to cope with bums trying to “steal the iron bars off the windows” for the scrap metal and bricks coming through his windows.

“My wife’s ill and she can’t cope with this. But at 2 a.m. last week, a brick whizzed through the top floor window, the bedroom. Sorry, Mr. Policeman. I need your help.”

“The vagrants moved in en masse . . . [in] tent cities. They’re all young; they’re all like 24,” he said, adding that, “They’re aggressive, and because there’s an awful lot of them together they’re gang-y.”

They have also spoiled beach life: “And the heroin spikes . . . You can’t take anyone to the beach because there’s jabs just waiting for young kids to put their feet in — and poo all over the sand.”

This might sound like hypocrisy coming from a punk rocker, but it’s really not. The whole ethos of ’70s and ’80s punk rock is live and let live. No rules … at least until you interfere with me living the life I want to live, which is exactly what is happening to Rotten.

If you want to know what an actual punk rock sellout looks like, I give you Henry Rollins, the Vandals legend who endorsed … Obamacare.

In fact, Rotten (whose real name is John Lydon) is bucking an establishment that treats these vagrants as sacred cows while at the same time pretending they do not exist because their rising numbers reflect badly on the Democrat-run strongholds that cannot manage the growing problem.

The media and the left-wing political establishment want us to see the homeless as victims of a cruel American capitalism that allows good people to fall through society’s cracks. Naturally, the only solution to this problem is big government socialism.

But the truth is that American capitalism licked poverty decades ago. The so-called “poor” in this country now have cable TV, central heat, air conditioning, videogames, microwave ovens, iPhones, and struggle with over eating. The homeless are an altogether different problem.

Certainly, good people slip through the cracks temporarily. No question. But there are all kinds of avenues to help those who are sincere about getting back on their feet. The homeless epidemic is actually an epidemic of mental illness, addiction, and tolerance.

City’s that tolerate poopy beaches and sidewalks, hypodermic needles, and aggressive panhandling only end up attracting even bigger problems and making the lives of their normal citizens miserable.

Johnny Rotten complaining about one of the most sacred of sacred cows is as punk as it gets, and so is his support of Trump and Brexit.

LA City Council May Operate Tent Encampments for 34,000 Homeless… THEY DON’T ASK ILLEGALS TO LIVE IN TENTS!!!

http://www.breitbart.com/california/2018/03/25/la-city-council-may-operate-tent-encampments-for-34000-homeless/

Jae C. Hong / Associated Press

by CHRISS W. STREET25 Mar 2018Newport Beach, CA99

The Los Angeles City Council voted last week to develop an “emergency” plan that could operate trailer and tent encampments to house 34,000-homeless — similar to the plan developed by Orange County.

The Los Angeles City Council on March 23 declared a homeless crisis by requesting the Los Angeles County Homeless Services Authority implement an Emergency Response to Homelessness Plan that would provide an alternative to encampments for 100 percent of the Los Angeles homeless population by December 31, 2018.

The Los Angeles Housing Authority recently reported that of the 34,189 homeless identified in the 2017 federally mandated count, 25,237 or 76 percent, were unsheltered and living on sidewalks, cars, tents, or mobile homes.

The report was released 16 months after homeless advocates convinced city voters they could permanently solve homeless by passing Measure HHH ballot initiative, which raised property taxes by $9.64 per $100,000 of assessed valuation to fund a $1.2 billion bond.

Los Angeles County then convinced voters in March 2017 to pass Measure H to provide $350 million per year worth of homeless mental health and addiction services through a ¼ percent increased sales tax up to 10 percent in a number of L.A. County cities.

Both measures only achieved the 2/3 majority required to pass because of a miraculous surge from absentee voters in central and south LA districts that supported higher taxes.

LA City Council members also recently voted to build 222 units of permanent supportive homeless housing in each of the 15 LA City Council districts by 2020. The first 122 of the 3,330 approved homeless units broke ground in East Hollywood in November.

But the federal 2017 City of Los Angeles homeless count found the population had spiked by 5,698, or about 20 percent, since 2016. That means despite raising $1.2 billion in taxes, the net number of homeless after the new construction has already increased by 2,368.

Last month, the city council voted unanimously to start housing 60 homeless people in trailers on a city-owned downtown lot. But despite the city paying $2 million for trailers equipped with bathrooms and showers, and funding allocating another $1 million a year to operate the downtown trailer park, CBS News reported that local restaurant owners say transients already hurt their business, and the trailers will make the situation worse.

The City of Los Angeles told voters it could solve the homeless problem with the HHH tax increase and $1.2 billion. But it cost Orange County $780,000 per month temporarily to house 700 homeless evicted from the Santa Ana River in 400 motel rooms. Given the enormous scale of L.A.’s homeless problem, that would cost the city about $49.2 million a month.

Orange County Supervisors voted on March 19 to set up tent cities on county parcels next to public parks in Irvine, Huntington, and Laguna Niguel. All 3 cities are threatening to file lawsuits to prevent the Orange County from dumping its problem on local communities.

None of the 15 Los Angeles Districts wants the risk exposure to infectious diseases that come with a homeless encampment. Breitbart News reported that a hepatitis A outbreak began among San Diego’s homeless population and has spread statewide. The latest California Public Health report found 703 new cases, 460 hospitalizations, and 21 deaths.

Rising Homelessness Among Working Californians… a state that employs millions using stolen social security numbers and hands out tens of BILLIONS in social services and welfare!

BE HONEST! WHEN HAVE YOU EVER HEARD EVEN ONE OF THESE PRO-AMNESTY AND OPEN BORDERS POLITICIANS EVEN MENTION THE TRAGEDY OF AMERICA’S MILLION HOMELESS LEGALS???

Dave Ramsey

Dear Dave, Mom Stole My College Loan Money!

In California, the rising number of homeless people are not who you may think they are. The Los Angeles Times editorial board recently drove home that point by personalizing what it means to be homeless in the United States' second-most populous city in 2018.
