Mexican authorities formally charged a leading figure with the Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas for the murder of a respected journalist in the border state of Tamaulipas. Authorities believe the journalist was murdered for his work covering crime in the region. The charges come a year after the murder and are part of a larger investigation into the criminal organization’s shootings, kidnappings, and murders in the region.

This week, Mexico’s Attorney General’s office revealed at a court hearing they formally charged Rafael Santiago Arano Rodriguez on murder charges for the 2022 killing of journalist Antonio De La Cruz and his daughter Cinthya. De La Cruz was a respected journalist in El Expreso newspaper in Ciudad Victoria and had carried out several investigations into organized crime and corruption. He had not been the target of threats prior to his murder.

Arano Rodriguez has been in custody since January when state authorities arrested him in connection with other cartel-connected charges.

During the hearing, an unnamed judge received 109 pieces of evidence linking Arano Rodriguez to De La Cruz’s murder. The judge ordered that he be held without bond pending another hearing in four months. Arano Rodriguez remains in custody at a prison in the border city of Nuevo Laredo.

At the time of Arano Rodriguez’s initial arrest, authorities found a cell phone with a message allegedly linking the crime boss to the murder.

As Breitbart Texas reported, on June 29, 2022, a group of gunmen in a motorcycle pulled up to De La Cruz’s home and shot at him as he was about to drive his daughter Cinthya to work. De La Cruz died at the scene. His daughter died soon after.

He (DeSANTIS) vowed as president to employ U.S. law enforcement assets across the border if necessary to stop the flow of fentanyl and other drugs into the United States.

Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of Homeland Security who keeps insisting the southern border is secure, intervened to help obtain a sentence commutation for the son of a major Democrat Party donor.  The son was a convicted drug dealer.

Then U.S. attorney Mayorkas approached the White House in 2000 on behalf of Carlos Vignali, a convicted drug trafficker whom prosecutors said was a leading figure in a drug ring with nearly three dozen members that stretched from California to Minnesota.

Vignali's father was a wealthy real-estate developer and a substantial donor to California Democrats.  He persuaded more than nine important Democrat politicians to approach Bill Clinton on his son's behalf.  He increased his political donations as his son's trial began, then donated ever-increasing amounts to the Democratic National Committee during their convention in Los Angeles.  The Vignali family also contributed to Xavier Becerra's political campaigns prior to his advocacy for Carlos.  Becerra is currently the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

DeSantis: In My Administration Drug Dealers at Border Will End Up ‘Stone Cold Dead’

Republican Presidential hopeful Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) said Wednesday on Fox News Channel’s “The Story” that his administration would use deadly force on drug dealers at the U.S. border.

DeSantis said, “People are dying by the tens of thousands because of the fentanyl that’s trafficked in.”

He continued, “We’re going to obviously build the wall and do that. But what I’ve seen in my trips down there and I’ve taken a number of them, the cartels will actually cut through the good part of the border wall like a blow torch or a saw. They have backpacks on and they run though the drugs. My view as commander in chief would be is we have to have appropriate rules of engagement to say, ‘if you’re cutting through a border wall on sovereign U.S. territory and you’re trying to poison Americans, you’re going to end up stone cold dead.’ We are not going to put up with this right now. The drug cartels control our border. It’s open season.”

DeSantis added, “And it is not just at the border in the cartels are crossing. We’ll have maritime operations because what you have is these precursor chemicals are being shipped in to Mexico. The cartels then take the chemicals, they create the fentanyl product and move it in to the United States and kills people and every community across this country. We’re going to do full spectrum to finally put this issue to rest.”

Mexican President Tells U.S. Hispanics Not to Vote for DeSantis

Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is asking Hispanics in Florida not to vote for Ron DeSantis in his bid for the 2024 presidential nomination. The Mexican politician claims that DeSantis, much like other Republicans, is using an anti-immigrant message for political purposes.

Despite his constant criticism of the U.S. government for interfering in other countries’ politics, Lopez Obrador (AMLO) openly called for Hispanics in Florida to not give a single vote to DeSantis.

“I’ll take the time to tell Mr. Santi [sic] who unmasked himself [this week], see I wasn’t wrong,” Lopez Obrador said as he waved his hand in a greeting fashion. “That all of his politicking about migrants was because he wants to be the candidate for the Republican Party.

The Mexican President criticized DeSantis claiming that he had applied anti-migrant policies in his state and as such he hoped that Hispanics repaid him at the polls.

“I hope the Hispanics in Florida wake up and don’t give him a single vote,” Lopez Obrador said. “That they don’t vote for those who target migrants. Those who don’t respect migrants.”

Lopez Obrador called DeSantis a hypocrite and asked for him to be investigated to see if he had hired migrants.

DeSantis, like various other U.S. politicians, have fiercely criticized Mexico’s government in connection with the current fentanyl crisis. The extremely dangerous drug is linked to record-setting overdose deaths. As Breitbart Texas has reported, Lopez Obrador falsely denied that fentanyl is produced in Mexico and claimed that the problem is caused by the U.S. demand for drugs. AMLO claimed that Florida should be investigated to see if the ports of that state could be the entry point for fentanyl from Asia.

As Breitbart Texas has reported, Lopez Obrador verbally clashed with U.S. politicians who he believes are interfering in Mexican politics. He has also stated that he will be asking people to not vote for certain candidates that do not align with his view.

Illegal immigration imposes an enormous burden on American taxpayers.

Annually, the 11 to 22 million illegal aliens living in the U.S. costs taxpayers more than $143 billion. That amount, though, does not include any of the social and economic costs — such as higher housing prices, depleted wages, lost jobs, increased crime, and strained public resources at hospitals and schools — associated with illegal immigration.

DeSantis Unveils Hardline Plan To

Secure Border

Getty Images
June 26, 2023

Florida governor Ron DeSantis on Monday provided his most detailed plan yet for securing the U.S. southern border with Mexico as he tries to make up ground against Donald Trump in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

At an event in Eagle Pass, Texas, on the Rio Grande river border with Mexico, DeSantis took a swipe at Trump, lumping him with other presidents he said had failed to take action to stem the flow of migrants at the border.

"No excuses on this," DeSantis said. "Get the job done."

DeSantis, who announced his presidential bid last month, has struggled to gain momentum against Trump, the ex-president who is seeking another term in the White House. National opinion polls show DeSantis trailing Trump by more than 20 percentage points.

DeSantis’s border-security plan marked his latest effort to appeal to the party’s hardcore conservative voters in the hope of peeling some away from Trump, who has made illegal immigration a core issue of his presidential bids.

After touting his record as Florida governor for weeks on the campaign trail, DeSantis is slowly rolling out national policy programs. Energy and tax plans are in the offing, he said.

As part of his border plan, DeSantis would end so-called catch and release and would detain migrants crossing the border until their hearing dates; deny entry to any migrant at the border claiming political asylum; and tax remittances from migrants living in the country illegally to pay for the construction of a border wall.

DeSantis also would move to end so-called birthright citizenship, which allows children of migrants born in this country to become U.S. citizens, and allow state and local officials to enforce federal immigration laws.

He vowed as president to employ U.S. law

enforcement assets across the border if

necessary to stop the flow of fentanyl and

other drugs into the United States.

He said he would do as much as possible through unilateral executive action without waiting for Congress to act.

Trump has also pledged to end birthright citizenship and to continue the hardline immigration policies he instituted as president. His campaign on Monday accused DeSantis of "copying and pasting" Trump's policy agenda.

While president in 2018, Trump said he planned to issue an executive order to limit birthright citizenship, but never followed through. Many legal scholars at the time were skeptical that Trump could use executive authority to roll back the right.

At the Texas event, DeSantis contended that the border has become a portal through which migrants from around the world enter and said the influx was straining the budgets of local communities.

"There are people from halfway around the world coming through on this southern border because they know all you got to do is show up in the border and you’re going to get a ticket to come into the interior of the United States," he said.

Ammar Moussa, spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, criticized DeSantis's plan, saying it consists of "political gimmicks that are merely an echo of the same cruel and callous policies of the Trump administration that broke our immigration system."

President Joe Biden's administration last week secured a victory before the U.S. Supreme Court when it held that border states could not challenge federal priorities on enforcement of immigration policy.

Speaking with reporters after the event on Monday, DeSantis again defended his use of private planes to relocate migrants from Texas to Democratic-run states such as California and Massachusetts.

"It's been very effective," he said, adding that it "will continue to be used."

Rival Cartels in Mexico Make Peace, Turn on Mutual Enemy near Texas Border

Two drug cartels with a long history of animosity appear to have set their differences aside in an attempt to gang up on a rival organization. The new alliance led to the continued fierce turf war over control of lucrative drug and human trafficking routes into Texas.

Last week, the Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas, which is based in Nuevo Laredo, announced they were looking into an alliance with the Escorpiones faction of the Gulf Cartel. The announcement came through a video where the two groups claimed to want to participate in an armistice that Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador discussed in one of his news conferences.

In the video, a group of gunmen in black uniforms with body armor and carrying various weapons stand behind a hooded spokesman who claims that they are in peace talks with the Matamoros faction of the Gulf Cartel and they are on the same page.

The message comes at a time when CDN-Los Zetas have been waging a fierce turf war with the Reynosa faction of the Gulf Cartel, also known as Metros. The CDN-Los Zetas have been pushing east and gaining territory for several months. Most recently, there have been several shootouts in and around Miguel Aleman, just south of Roma, Texas, where the Metros appear to be on the losing side. At the same time, the Metros have been fighting off numerous incursions on the eastern side of Reynosa as the Escorpiones faction has been pushing west from Rio Bravo.

The peace talks between Escorpiones and CDN-Los Zetas could make the turf war more difficult for Los Metros. However, Los Metros claims to have the support of Cartel Jalisco New Generation and another group called Old School Zetas.

In the video message, the CDN-Los Zetas spokesman claimed to be interested in a truce for peace that a group of activists had originally proposed. That group searches for mass graves to find missing loved ones. Delia Quiroa, the leader of the activists, had asked all of Mexico’s cartels to look into a truce of sorts to end forced disappearances and allow them to search for gravesites. Earlier this month, Lopez Obrador claimed that he favored finding new ways to bring peace.

A video provided to Fox News shows a Del Rio Sector Border Patrol agent appearing to cut a Texas-erected razor-wire border barrier. After opening the barrier, the agent allowed multiple migrants to enter the U.S. freely.

Fox News reporter Bill Melugin tweeted a video that appears to show a Border Patrol agent cutting a razor-wire border barrier on private property near Eagle Pass, Texas. The state of Texas erected the barrier with the permission of the land owner to deter or turn back migrants attempting to enter the United States illegally.

Melugin said an unnamed source provided the video showing what is believed to be the first time a Border Patrol agent has cut the Texas-erected barrier built under Governor Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star border security mission.

Not only does the Texas Department of Public Safety have permission from the land owner to erect the barrier along the edge of their property, but the State also has permission to arrest migrants who cross the barrier for criminal trespass, DPS officials told Melugin.

Breitbart Texas contacted Governor Abbott’s office and CBP officials for more information regarding the incident. An immediate response was not available at press time.

Melugin stated that CBP officials claim “The individuals had already crossed the Rio Grande from Mexico, were on U.S. soil, and are subject to immigration laws.”

The agency said the agent’s action in cutting the wire to access a group of migrants, including small children, to get them out of the heat is “consistent with federal law.”

EAGLE PASS, Texas — A potential tragedy was averted in the small border city of Eagle Pass, Texas, when Maverick County Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped a tractor-trailer on Thursday. After noting suspicious behavior by the truck driver and noises coming from the trailer, the deputies searched the pneumatic tank trailer being towed by the driver and located 18 migrants sealed inside.

According to a source within CBP, not authorized to speak to the media, federal authorities were summoned to investigate and ultimately charged the driver, a 46-year-old Texas man, with migrant smuggling. The case is currently under investigation by ICE Homeland Security Investigation (HSI). The driver faces an enhanced penalty of up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the offense due to the endangerment of those sealed in the airtight container.

The source told Breitbart Texas the case could have had a tragic outcome. In addition to the dangers of suffocation being transported in a sealed container, the record-breaking heat in Texas could have easily resulted in the loss of life for those trapped inside the trailer, according to the source.

Temperatures in the region have exceeded 100 degrees Fahrenheit for more than two consecutive weeks. Within the Del Rio Sector, according to the Border Patrol, ten migrants have died in the last seven days due to heat-related illnesses. During the same seven-day timeframe, more than 7,000 migrants were apprehended attempting to enter the United States. Most of the apprehensions occurred in Eagle Pass, making it one of the busiest crossing points in Texas.

The arrest comes almost one year to the day from a similar migrant smuggling event that resulted in the death of 53 migrants who were abandoned in a sealed semi-tractor trailer in San Antonio. In that case, police near the city initially discovered 48 migrants dead at the arrest scene and 16 others who required advanced medical care due to heat-related illness.

Five of those transported to area hospitals ultimately died from their injuries within days of the discovery.

Had the migrants not been discovered close to the border on Thursday, the source says the same fate may have also awaited them.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and Border Patrol agents seized guns, ammunition, and cash being smuggled toward Mexico.

Texas DPS spokesman Lt. Chris Olivarez tweeted a photo from the seizure of a weapons cache believed to be being smuggled to Mexico.

During a traffic stop in Willacy County, one county inland from the Texas-Mexico border, DPS troopers assigned to Governor Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star conducted a search of a vehicle and found multiple weapons and ammunition, Olivarez reported. The search led to the discovery of seven AR-15 rifles, two AK-47 rifles, one shotgun, one handgun, and six bump stocks.

He added that the troopers also found 14 rifle magazines and 14 ammunition packages.

Troopers arrested the driver, a San Antonio man on charges of weapons smuggling and felony possession of a firearm. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) will investigate to pursue federal charges as well, Olivarez stated.

Rio Grande Valley Sector Chief Patrol Agent Gloria Chavez also tweeted about weapons and cash seized by agents working southbound traffic under Operation Rolling Wave. She said Border Patrol agents across the county teamed up with other law enforcement partners to make a “significant weapons and currency seizure” earlier this week.

Between October 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023, Border Patrol agents along the southwest border seized more than $4.8 million in cash in 293 incidents, according to a CBP seizure report.

Agents also seized more than 1,145 firearms during this same period. These included 752 handguns and 385 long guns.

Leading Mexican Anti-Narco Freedom Fighter Killed in Cartel Attack

Hipolito Mora (1)
Breitbart Texas / Cartel Chronicles

Cartel gunmen ambushed and killed one of the founding members of a self-defense group made up of villagers who took up arms to fight cartel oppression. The slain figure was one of several freedom fighters that gained international fame in Michoacan for helping villagers fight against drug cartels in 2013.

On Thursday afternoon, several political figures and activists confirmed the murder of Hipolito Mora in the town of La Ruana — a rural area in the Mexcian state of Michoacan. Mora was riding his vehicle at the time of the attack. During the attack, the rival gunmen set the vehicle ablaze. Four bodyguards with Mora at the time of the attack are also believed to have been killed.

Mora gained fame after convincing locals to take up arms in 2013 against the Knights Templar and La Familia Michoacana due to the government’s inability to protect the public. Since then, several of the self-defense group leaders started their own criminal organizations and established alliances with either faction of the Sinaloa Cartel (Carteles Unidos) or Cartel Jalisco New Generation.

Law enforcement sources consulted by Breitbart Texas revealed that Mora’s murder came after he fell out with leaders of the Los Viagras cartel over a drug production lab that military forces raided last year. Since then, Mora fled La Ruana and survived prior assassination attempts.

Mora’s murder comes at a time when Michoacan remains one of the most deadly states in Mexico as various criminal organizations fight for control of drug production and drug trafficking routes into Mexico. In the ongoing fight to control those areas, cartel members used explosives, weaponized drones, and armored vehicles with complete impunity. Last year, Breitbart Texas exclusively published documents that showed that current Michoacan Governor Alfredo Bedolla has familial ties to some of the current cartel leaders in his state.

Exclusive: Official Says Biden’s CBP One Program Benefits Drug Cartels

Frontline employees being pulled from normal inspection duties are reducing the number of labor hours dedicated to finding hidden narcotics, according to a source within Customs and Border Protection. Hundreds of hours daily are spent processing more than one thousand migrants using the CBP One application to schedule appointments to secure their release into the United States.

In May 2023, CBP announced the agency would increase the daily number of appointments for migrants wishing to claim asylum to 1,000 per day and that appointments would be prioritized through an algorithm for those who have the longest wait times using the application. In the announcement, the DHS officials said the latter change would “Cut out smugglers who are preying on noncitizens by prioritizing appointments for those who have been waiting the longest. A percentage of daily available appointments will be allocated to the earliest registered CBP One™ profiles, so noncitizens who have been trying to obtain appointments for the longest time will be prioritized.”

CBP Migrant App (U.S. Customs and Border Protection)

CBP Migrant App (U.S. Customs and Border Protection)

Despite the claims that the new “lawful pathway” program would cut out smuggling activities by the cartels, the source, who is not authorized to speak to the media, says the impacts are to the contrary. “Any way you look at it, the border is a dangerous place,” the source stated. “The cartels don’t just profit off of the migrants, they survive and thrive by smuggling narcotics.”

“One worry is by redirecting personnel from inspections to asylum processing we are missing the deadliest drug we have seen in modern times, fentanyl,” the source told Breitbart Texas.

After another increase in available appointments announced in May, some 1,250 migrants began to use the CBP One application daily to schedule appointments to have their asylum claims processed at several southwest border ports of entry. Those ports are located in California, Arizona, and Texas. Some of the designated ports of entry are the busiest in the nation. One is the busiest on a more global scale. At the San Ysidro border crossing near the heart of downtown San Diego, more than 70,000 vehicles enter the country each day. In addition, 20,000 pedestrians are inspected for admission each day at the busiest port of entry in the Western Hemisphere.

At the smaller ports of entry, fewer migrants are allowed appointments. However, due to reduced staffing, the effects on the inspection process just as significant. Several times per day, groups of migrants appear for processing in Eagle Pass, Texas, and are released into the United States. Less than one hundred are processed at this port of entry daily. That port of entry may be forced to receive additional migrants due to a recent cancellation of the program in Laredo, Texas. The pause in the processing of CBP One appointments in Laredo is due to reports of migrants being extorted by authorities in Mexico.

The source tells Breitbart, each day 1,250 migrants from a variety of countries, including Venezuela, Cuba, Russia, Mexico, and others across Central America require hours of administrative processing that is converting some frontline CBP Officers into asylum petition clerks.

The source says the officers tasked with processing the migrants are redirected from pedestrian screening and vehicle inspection stations. “The cartels use humans to serve as body carriers and have become quite creative when concealing narcotics in the thousands of vehicles that cross daily,” the source explained. “Finding the drugs is a time-consuming process that should not suffer as a result of the CBP One program.”

Recent fentanyl seizures made by authorities at the border crossing points and in communities farther away from the border highlight the volume of fentanyl that Mexican cartels move every day.

As the result of a recent two-month DHS coordinated surge of resources to combat the smuggling of fentanyl in California and Arizona — Operation Blue Lotus — authorities in San Diego County noted a 300 percent increase in fentanyl seizures versus the same period last year – from 732 pounds in 2022 to 2,931 pounds in 2023. The operation involved the augmentation of 35 Customs and Border Protection officers and 85 Homeland Security Investigations special agents along the southwest border from March 13 to May 10, 2023.

The two-month fentanyl-enforcement surge along the southwest border resulted in the seizure of about 4,721 pounds of fentanyl and 1,700 pounds of fentanyl precursors, according to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of California.

On May 30, one of the largest seizures of fentanyl by the Border Patrol was reported at a Yuma highway checkpoint. As reported by Breitbart Texas, Border Patrol agents seized more than 190 pounds of fentanyl discovered meticulously concealed in a passenger vehicle. That seizure, according to the Border Patrol, contained enough lethal doses of the drug to kill 40 million people and had a street value estimated at over $2 million.

This single seizure was more than the entire amount of fentanyl seized by the Border Patrol in the month of April according to CBP. In most cases involving intricate concealed compartment smuggling detected in Border Patrol cases, the narcotics are loaded in Mexico and driven through a port of entry according to the source.

The source worries that future increases in the number of migrants allowed to seek asylum appointments at ports of entry through the CBP One application will further detract from the agency’s ability to adequately inspect pedestrians and vehicles entering the United States.
