There's nothing like a good scare over illegal immigration to get out the vote.
Remember those political mailers sent to Republican homes in Melbourne and the South Beaches that pictured Mexicans clambering over a fence in Arizona? Remember the daily chain e-mails with photos of border crossers that the mainstream media "refused" to publish?
Well, voter sentiment has cooled since November. And now the lone initiative that might further reduce illegal workers in Florida -- requiring employers to use the federal E-Verify database to check eligibility -- was stripped by a committee Monday from the Senate's key immigration-reform bill. Big Business is back in charge in Tallahassee, you see. It would rather stick with tax-free labor that doesn't demand minimum wage, overtime pay or pesky workplace safety rules.
Do you care? Probably not as much as when politicians pushed your buttons last fall, polls show.
But Florida still has a problem with illegal workers who come from all over the globe to take restaurant, construction and property-maintenance jobs that citizens definitely want. Note that in occupations with the highest percentages of illegal laborers -- roofers, insulation installers, butchers, food processors -- Americans still make up 70 percent to 80 percent of the workforce, the Pew Hispanic Center reports.

In interviews with FLORIDA TODAY, Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, pledged an immigration bill that "fit Florida." That means tackling under-the-table hiring. Haridopolos should put E-Verify back into the bill.
"That's where I believe the consensus or the strength of the Senate is on E-Verify," Haridopolos told reporters Wednesday in Tallahassee.
The other stuff in the Legislature's proposed immigration bills -- like giving local cops power to check the citizenship of people they catch committing crimes -- might lead to five or six more deportations from Brevard County each year.

Florida Study Reveals High Cost of Illegal Immigration and Voter Dissatisfaction
A new Zogby International poll shows that Florida voters think that illegal immigration is hurting the Sunshine State by an overwhelming margin. A new FAIR study confirms the poll, finding that illegal immigration costs Florida taxpayers $3.8 billion annually, which is double from 2005.
The Zogby poll found that 71.3 percent of Florida voters believe that immigration has a negative impact on the state and 83.5 percent believe that illegal immigration has a negative impact on the state budget.
The FAIR study found that:
$3.4 billion a year to educate illegal immigrant children and the U.S. born children of illegal immigrants.
$290 million a year on unreimbursed health care for illegal aliens.
$90 million a year to incarcerate criminal illegal aliens.
The total represents an annual cost to each of Florida's native-born headed households of $678.
The study also estimates Florida's illegal population to be 950,000, which is 7.3 percent of the nation's total illegal alien population. Florida has the fourth highest concentration of illegal aliens behind California, Texas and New York.

Truth: In Los Angeles, as of January, 2004, 95 percent of all outstanding warrants for homicide (which total 1,200 to 1,500) target illegal aliens. The anchor baby scam has proven lucrative for illegal aliens in Los Angeles County, at considerable cost to our own poor and downtrodden legal citizenry.
The numbers show that more than $50 million in CalWORKS benefits and food stamps for January went to children born in the United States whose parents are in the country without documentation. This represents approximately 23 percent of the total benefits under the state welfare and food stamp programs, Antonovich said.
"When you add this to $350 million for public safety and nearly $500 million for health care, the total cost for illegal immigrants to county taxpayers far exceeds $1 billion a year -- not including the millions of dollars for education," Antonovich said.
I love children and I'm all for compassion -- smart, teach-them-to-fish compassion. But when laws, the Constitution, and enforcement allow illegal aliens (the operative word here being "illegal") to insinuate themselves into our nation and bleed us of our precious financial resources, then laws, the Constitution and enforcement need to be changed.

Florida Study Reveals High Cost of Illegal Immigration and Voter Dissatisfaction
A new Zogby International poll shows that Florida voters think that illegal immigration is hurting the Sunshine State by an overwhelming margin. A new FAIR study confirms the poll, finding that illegal immigration costs Florida taxpayers $3.8 billion annually, which is double from 2005.
The Zogby poll found that 71.3 percent of Florida voters believe that immigration has a negative impact on the state and 83.5 percent believe that illegal immigration has a negative impact on the state budget.
The FAIR study found that:
$3.4 billion a year to educate illegal immigrant children and the U.S. born children of illegal immigrants.
$290 million a year on unreimbursed health care for illegal aliens.
$90 million a year to incarcerate criminal illegal aliens.
The total represents an annual cost to each of Florida's native-born headed households of $678.
The study also estimates Florida's illegal population to be 950,000, which is 7.3 percent of the nation's total illegal alien population. Florida has the fourth highest concentration of illegal aliens behind California, Texas and New York.

The bloody gang collaborates with the Mexican Mafia, the dominant force in California prisons, on complex drug distribution schemes, extortion, and drive by assassinations, and commits an assault or robbery every day in L.A. County. The gang has grown dramatically over the last two decades by recruiting recently arrived youngsters, most of them illegal, from Central America and Mexico.

La Voz de Aztlan has produced a video in honor of the millions of babies that have been born as US citizens to Mexican undocumented parents. These babies are destined to transform America. The nativist CNN reporter Lou Dobbs estimates that there are over 200,000 "Anchor Babies" born every year whereas George Putnam, a radio reporter, says the figure is closer to 300,000. La Voz de Aztlan believes that the number is approximately 500,000 "Anchor Babies" born every year.

Anchor Babies Grab One Quarter of Welfare Dollars in LA Co
The anchor baby scam has proven lucrative for illegal aliens in Los Angeles County, at considerable cost to our own poor and downtrodden legal citizenry.
The numbers show that more than $50 million in CalWORKS benefits and food stamps for January went to children born in the United States whose parents are in the country without documentation. This represents approximately 23 percent of the total benefits under the state welfare and food stamp programs, Antonovich said.
"When you add this to $350 million for public safety and nearly $500 million for health care, the total cost for illegal immigrants to county taxpayers far exceeds $1 billion a year -- not including the millions of dollars for education," Antonovich said.
I love children and I'm all for compassion -- smart, teach-them-to-fish compassion. But when laws, the Constitution, and enforcement allow illegal aliens (the operative word here being "illegal") to insinuate themselves into our nation and bleed us of our precious financial resources, then laws, the Constitution and enforcement need to be changed.
