Pandemic Prize: Amazon’s Q1 Sales Soar 44%

E-commerce giant Amazon released its first-quarter results on Thursday, reporting a 44  percent sales increase. The results blew analysts’ expectations out of the water. The Masters of the Universe say they expect their sales to continue to climb in the second quarter.

CNBC reports that Amazon shares climbed more than three percent in extended trading on Thursday and are up on Friday morning after the company released its first-quarter earnings, beating Wall Street expectations for both earnings and revenue.

Amazon reported earnings of $15.79 per share vs $9.54 per share expected. Amazon also enjoyed a revenue surge of 44 percent to $108.52 billion vs $104.47 billion expected. Amazon has seen a major surge in its online shopping business partly due to the coronavirus pandemic leading to many choosing to shop online rather than in-person.

Amazon’s guidance for the second quarter implies that it expects this success to continue, expecting to post revenue between $110 billion and $116 billion, which surpasses Wall Street’s projection of $108.6 billion.

Amazon has confirmed that its popular “Prime Day” sale will start in June of this year, which is likely to help year-over-year comparisons for revenue in the second quarter. Amazon’s annual two-day discount sale usually takes place in July but the company postponed the event to October last year due to pandemic-related uncertainty.

Discussing Prime Day timing, Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky stated on a call with investors: “In many areas, July is vacation month, so it might be better for customers, sellers and vendors to experiment with a different time period. We believe that it might be better timing later in [the second quarter], so that’s what we’re testing this year.”

Amazon’s cloud-computing and advertising businesses also saw major success this year with Amazon Web Services seeing nets ales of $13.5 billion during the quarter, an increase of 32 percent year over year. Amazon does not directly release advertising sales but its “Other” revenue category grew by 77 percent year over year to $6.9 billion.

US CEO pay soars during pandemic

For the majority of the population, the COVID-19 pandemic has been a catastrophe on a scale not seen since the Second World War. With a death toll over 586,000 in the US alone, millions of families have lost loved ones, as parents, spouses, siblings, and even children fell ill and succumbed to the virus in a matter of days. Millions more have survived an infection only to face debilitating long-term consequences to their health.

For those employed in factories, warehouses and countless other workplaces which have remained open, the workday has become a gamble with death. For the millions of others who have been thrown into unemployment and deprived of adequate incomes, the threat of destitution, hunger and homelessness is ever-present.

But for a small section of society, the last year has produced a windfall.

Pay packages for CEOs at major US companies soared over the course of the pandemic, according to annual corporate filings released in recent weeks. And some executives received much bigger payouts than others, “earning” stratospheric compensation topping the until recently unprecedented amount of $100 million:

  • Chad Richison, CEO of Paycom, a software company based in Oklahoma, took in over $211 million in salary and share options.

  • Amir Dan Rubin, CEO of 1Life Healthcare, a chain of health clinics in San Francisco, was awarded over $199 million.

  • John Legere, CEO of cell provider T-Mobile—which consummated a merger with rival Sprint last year—received over $137 million.

At companies listed on the S&P 500 index, which includes many of the largest US firms, median chief executive pay hit the relatively more “modest” amount of $13.3 million in 2020, nevertheless an all-time record and the 11th straight annual increase, according to ISS EGG, a shareholder advisory group.

Huge sums were handed over even to CEOs at corporations that suffered substantial losses due to the pandemic:

  • James Murren, chairman and CEO MGM Resorts, the Las Vegas-based hotel and casino giant, received an exit compensation package of $32 million when he left last year, making him the 14th-highest paid executive in 2020, despite a loss of $1 billion by the company.

  • Chris Nassetta, head of the Hilton hotel chain, was awarded $55.9 million, coming in at number five on the list of highest-paid executives. The company reported a loss of $720 million for the year.

  • David Calhoun, president and CEO of aerospace manufacturing giant Boeing, received over $21 million in compensation, even though the company reported a colossal loss of $12 billion.

Companies such as Boeing, Hilton, and Norwegian Cruise Lines terminated or furloughed thousands or tens of thousands of workers, while requesting multi-billion-dollar government bailouts. Ultimately, Boeing was able to raise private funding, but only as a result of the Federal Reserve’s direct support for the corporate bond market and maintenance of ultra-low interest rates.

In a number of instances, companies carried out cuts with the flimsy pretext of “shared sacrifice,” misleadingly declaring in Hilton’s case that Nassetta would forgo his salary for much of the year. However, for Nassetta and many others, awards of company shares now make up much more sizable portions of executive compensation than their base salary.

In fact, the gulf between executive pay and that of the average employee has expanded dramatically. At S&P 500 companies, median employee pay fell 17 percent, so that the CEO-to-employee pay ratio went from 182-to-1 to 227-to-1, according to the Financial Times.

For decades, the process of wealth accumulation at the top has been more and more separated from the productive process and instead drawn from stock market speculation and financial manipulation, a transformation proceeding under Republican and Democratic administrations alike. In fact, the Biden presidency has overseen the fastest rise of the S&P 500 of any administration in the last 75 years, going back to Eisenhower.

For workers, the seemingly endless stagnation or decline of wages and working conditions has produced a growing mood of opposition and the reemergence of strikes in recent weeks. In each case, workers’ demands for their essential needs—including the reversal of previous wage and benefit cuts, adequate staffing levels, and, in particular, the implementation of serious measures to address COVID-19—have been bitterly resisted by corporate executives who have themselves reaped multi-million-dollar paydays:

  • At Tenet Healthcare-owned St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts, roughly 700 nurses are in the second month of their strike, fighting for safe nurse-to-patient staffing ratios and an end to dangerous workloads. Tenet’s CEO, Ronald Rittenmeyer, raked in $16.7 million in 2020. Under Rittenmeyer, the company, a multibillion-dollar corporation, furloughed some 11,000 workers last year and pulled in almost $399 million in profit.

  • At steel firm Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (ATI), 1,300 steelworkers in five states have been on strike against company demands for major concessions to jobs, health benefits, and pensions, although the United Steelworkers union has sought to avoid raising any concrete demands by conducting the walkout as an “unfair labor practices strike,” claiming ATI is not bargaining in “good faith.” ATI CEO Robert Wetherbee received compensation of $5.7 million in 2020, a 3 percent increase from the prior year.

  • At Volvo Trucks’ New River Valley plant in southwestern Virginia, nearly 3,000 workers have been on strike since April 17. Martin Lundstedt, president and CEO Volvo AB, the Swedish-based parent company of Volvo Trucks North America, took in approximately $5.2 million (43,926,000 Swedish kronor) in 2020, while his deputy, Jan Gurander, received roughly $2.5 million.

  • At Warrior Met Coal in Alabama, 1,100 miners have been on strike for over three weeks, demanding to reverse the $6-an-hour wage cut and benefit concessions negotiated by the United Mine Workers of America union in 2016. Warrior Met’s CEO, Walter J. Scheller, III, received over $4.3 million in pay in 2020, an 8 percent increase from the prior year.

  • And at Columbia University in New York City, some 3,000 graduate student workers have been waging a struggle for decent pay, health care, and other benefits. Like many of his university administrator colleagues increasingly drawn from corporate America, Columbia’s president, Lee Bollinger, has a multi-million-dollar pay package of $4.5 million.

In discussions with workers, the World Socialist Web Site and Socialist Equality Party are frequently asked: How is it that management doesn’t recognize that we’re being exposed to COVID-19, that people are dying, that we need more to live? Why don’t they see that we need to shut down to deal with the virus? And why do the unions, which say they represent us, always side with management?

The answer is that the incomes and fortunes of the major corporate executives, and behind them the financiers and large investors, dictate their determination that workplaces remain open and that profits continue to be produced through the exploitation of the working class, both in the US and globally. Not only that, the material interests of the capitalist class require that this exploitation intensify, with new rounds of wage cuts, layoffs, and corporate restructuring being planned and implemented.

And the heads of the corporatist enterprises called “unions” themselves have become integral parts in enforcing these policies, junior executives in the systems of labor management, and are compensated as such. From American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten (annual pay, $564,236), to Stuart Applebaum of the RWDSU ($344,464), to Service Employees International Union President Mary Kay Henry ($279,126), to the countless other union executives with bloated expense accounts and six-figure salaries, all have wealth and interests placing them in a social strata both separate from and hostile to workers. The integration of the unions into management has taken place internationally, with Bernd Osterloh, head of the joint works council at Volkswagen and leading member of the IG Metall trade union, recently announced to have accepted a management position at VW’s truck and bus subsidiary, with a projected income of around €1 million.

The interests of the corporate executives and financial aristocracy, defended loyally by their aides in the unions, have become a cancer on society. Their entire social order, capitalism, is the main obstacle to meeting any of the essential needs of the majority of the population and is preventing the measures necessary to end the pandemic, including an emergency shutdown of non-essential production and full compensation for workers and support for small businesses.

Growing layers of the working class are being moved into struggle, struggles which will increasingly raise the question of who controls society—the capitalists and pandemic profiteers, whose interests demand profits and death, or the working class, whose interests demand the defense of life and satisfaction of social needs, i.e., socialism?

To equip these struggles with the necessary international perspective, program and organization, the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI) has issued a call for an International Workers Alliance of Rank-and-File Committees (IWA-RFC), a global network of rank-and-file factory and workplace committees democratically controlled by workers and independent of the trade unions and all bourgeois parties. This year, the ICFI is holding its International May Day Online Rally on Saturday, May 1, in order to explain the logic of the global crisis of capitalism and advance this initiative among workers around the world. Biden from the Beginning

Right from the start, the Delaware Democrat was all about power and money.

White House resident Joe Biden was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1972, at the age of 29. Two years later, in 1974, the Delaware Democrat was the subject of a 4,000-plus-word Washingtonian profile, but not for anything he had accomplished in office.

“I have no illusions about why I am such a hot commodity,” Biden told Kitty Kelley.  “I am the youngest man in the Senate and I am also the victim of a tragic fate which makes me very newsworthy.” Biden’s wife Neilia and the couple’s infant daughter were killed in a car accident shortly after Biden’s election in 1972. Biden wanted to resign, but Senate majority leader Mike Mansfield promised him prestigious committee assignments. The grieving newcomer had higher goals in mind.

“I know I can be a good Senator, and I know I can be a good President,” Biden told Kelley. “I know I could have easily made the White House with Neilia. And my family still expects me to be there one of these days. With them behind me anything can happen.” As Biden’s sister Valerie explained, “Joey is going to be president someday. He was made to be in the White House. Just you wait and see.”

Biden proclaimed “there is no other walk of life which can do more good for mankind than politics,” but money was also part of it. “I am worth a lot more than my salary of $42,500 a year in this body,” Biden explained in the Senate. “It seems to me that we should flat out tell the American people we are worth our salt.” That brought a response from William Loeb, editor of the “right wing”  Manchester Union Leader.

“Can you imagine the conceit and stupidity of a young man of 30 who would say that? The voters of Delaware who elected this stupid, conceited jackass to the Senate should kick him in the rear to knock some sense into him, and then kick themselves for voting for such an idiot.”

As Kelley noted, Biden framed Loeb’s editorial and hung it in his office. “When you get a blast like that you really know you’re worth something.” Kelley had reason for doubt.

In the course of the interview, Biden leaned over his desk, shook his finger and said,  “And whether you like it or not, young lady, us cruddy politicians can take away that First Amendment of yours if we want to.”  Kelley took the threat as confirmation that Joe Biden “defines politics as power.”

In 2010, Mark Bowen cited Kelley’s “notoriously revealing” profile in his 9,000-plus word Atlantic piece on the Delaware Democrat. As Bowden recalled, when Biden ran for president in 1988 he was “discovered passing off as his own passages from a speech by a British Labour politician.” In 2008, Biden finished the Iowa caucuses with less than one percent of the vote, and Bowden wondered if the Delaware Democrat might be seeking something else.

“I would not be anybody’s secretary of state in any circumstance I could think of,” Biden said at the time, “and I absolutely can say with certainty I would not be anybody’s vice president. Period. End of story. Guaranteed. Will not do it.” Biden did do it, and Bowden recalled his statement to Kelley that he would be a good president. Bowden wasn’t sure.

“Though plenty smart, Biden is not an intellectual,” Bowden explained. Biden was an “indifferent student” in college and law school, and “he makes few references to books and learned influences in his speeches and autobiography.” Bowden named no books that someone aspiring to be president of the United States might want to read, perhaps landmark works by Solzhenitsyn, Orwell, F.A. Hayek and many others. As Mark Twain said, the man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.

In a 1987 campaign speech, Joe Biden “borrowed liberally, and without attribution, from the British Labour politician Neil Kinnock.” At the time Kinnock and his party were heavily embedded with the Soviets, so Kinnock was perhaps the worst choice Biden could have made. On the other hand, Biden credits his humiliating plagiarism with “saving his life.” If he had stayed in the campaign, “he likely would have ignored the warning signs that sent him to the doctor.” What, exactly, the doctor needed to treat is not explained, but it is possible to guess.

Mark Bowden is the author of Black Hawk DownHuế 1968, and The Finish: The Killing of Osama Bin Laden. With Joe Biden the serious writer took a softer approach.

“Joe Biden doesn’t just meet you, he engulfs you. There’s the direct contact with his blue eyes, the firm handshake while his other hand grasps your arm, the flash of those famously perfect white teeth, and an immediate frontal assault on your personal space. He shoulders right through the aura of fame and high office. Forget the Secret Service, the ever-present battery of aides and advisers, the photographers clicking away: the vice president of the United States moves in like an old pal with something urgent to tell you—just you. If he’s in a chair, he’ll scoot it closer; when the furniture’s not portable, he’ll lean forward, planting his elbows on his knees, gesturing with both hands while he speaks, occasionally reaching over to touch your arm or leg for emphasis.”

Joe Biden is also a “virtuoso talker. That fluency is not a gift but an accomplishment.” Biden’s “occasional well-publicized gaffes have served to humanize a leadership team that all too often seems aloof, cerebral, and elitist.” Readers might think Biden’s gaffes are a positive accomplishment, and his politics largely a matter of style.

Contrast this highly promotional account with Kitty Kelley, known for unauthorized biographies of Nancy Reagan, Frank Sinatra and the Bush Family. Biden’s threats to take away First Amendment rights convinced Kelley that the Delaware Democrat “defines politics as power.”

Jump ahead to 2021 and the First Amendment is under attack as Joe Biden seems determined to take away the Second Amendment rights of every American. In the White House, Victor Davis Hanson notes, Biden is “as he always was,” as incompetent as Jimmy Carter, as corrupt as Bill Clinton and “a greater racial divider than Barack Obama.”

This is what happens when a cruddy politician taps the “most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in the history of American politics.”  


Darkness Falls: Bezos-Owned Washington Post To Stop Keeping Track of Biden’s Lies

The Washington Post will no longer maintain a database of President Joe Biden's false and misleading claims, executive fact checker Glenn Kessler announced this week.

The paper, owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, will continue to fact check statements from Biden and others. Kessler, for example, recently challenged Sen. Tim Scott's (R., S.C.) claim that his grandfather—a black farmer who grew up in South Carolina during the Great Depression—did not lead a particularly privileged life.

Kessler has determined that Biden does not lie enough—he's more of a "flub" kind of guy; an old geezer who's trying his best—to extend the database of presidential mistruths beyond his first 100 days in office. The Post‘s readers, meanwhile, are presumably less interested in fact checks that don't involve Donald Trump (or any Republican), so the decision makes sense from a business perspective.

The move is the latest example of a journalistic organization abandoning a crucial "accountability" project in the post-Trump era. It could also be related to the so-called burnout many professional journalists have complained about in recent weeks. The New York Times announced last week, for instance, that Taylor Lorenz and other employees would get special days off for "exhaustion" in 2021.

The Post‘s motto is "Democracy dies in darkness."
