House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Tuesday called for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) to resign after New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) said an investigation showed he sexually harassed and inappropriately touched multiple women.

Pelosi said in a statement:

Under Attorney General Letitia James, a comprehensive and independent investigation into the allegations against Governor Cuomo has been completed.

As always, I commend the women who came forward to speak their truth.

Recognizing his love of New York and the respect for the office he holds, I call upon the Governor to resign.

Pelosi’s statement made her the most powerful Democrat member of Congress to call for him to step down or be impeached. Earlier in the day, a string of progressive lawmakers, local politicians, and pundits called for his resignation or for him to be impeached if he did not resign. Some also called for Cuomo’s brother, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, to resign.

Republicans are also calling for Cuomo to resign.

Hours after the news broke, President Joe Biden said at a press briefing that he maintained his earlier position that if the allegations against Cuomo were substantiated, he should step down. “Yes,” he said, when asked if he was calling on Cuomo to resign.

“Let’s take one thing at a time here. I think he should resign,” he said.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) stated Tuesday New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) should resign or be impeached due to an investigation that concluded the Governor sexually harassed multiple women.

“It is beyond clear that Andrew Cuomo is not fit to hold office and can no longer serve as Governor. He must resign, and if he continues to resist and attack the investigators who did their jobs, he should be impeached immediately,” the statement reads:

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) also called for the Governor to resign Tuesday. “I do believe he should resign, she told reporters on Capitol Hill.

New York Reps. Tom Suozzi (D-NY), Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), and Greg Meeks (D-NY) also say Cuomo should “do the right thing for the people of New York State and resign.”

Gov. Cuomo rejected the findings of the report on Tuesday. “The facts are much different than what has been portrayed,” he said.

“I never touched anyone inappropriately or made inappropriate sexual advances,” he stated. “That is just not who I am or who I have ever been.”

New York Attorney General Letitia James announced her investigation “revealed conduct that corrodes the very fabric and character of our state government and shines light on injustice that can be present at the highest level of government.”
