Daniel Dae Kim recounts the hate crime that took away his sister’s ability to live her passion — running
Actor and activist Daniel Dae Kim recalled a violent hate crime his younger sister endured six years ago that has since stopped the once-avid runner from pursuing her passion.
A targeted attack: In a recent interview with People, Daniel narrated how his sister, Connie, was targeted and attacked by a driver while she was out on her daily run.
- According to Daniel, the driver screamed at her, telling her to get out of their way. When Connie moved aside, the driver proceeded to hit her twice, knocking her down.
- “This man specifically targeted her because of her race and tried to run her over with his car repeatedly,” Daniel was quoted as saying. “Because of the injuries sustained in the attack, she is not able to run anymore.”
- Law enforcement officials at the time discouraged them from pursuing hate crime charges, citing the difficulty in getting a successful prosecution with such a case. The suspect was instead convicted of a reckless driving misdemeanor.
- Later, it was discovered that the man who attacked Connie had a record of previous allegations of violence toward Asian women.
- Thankful for her brother’s support, Connie shared that Daniel always gives her a “feeling of stability and security that is invaluable.”
Daniel’s advocacy: Daniel has been an active voice in condemning anti-Asian hate crimes amid the rise of such incidents during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- In March, days after six Asian women were killed by a gunman in Atlanta, he appeared on Capitol Hill to urge Congress to pass the No Hate Bill and the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act.
- Speaking to the Subcommittee on Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, Daniel said, “I’m not naïve enough to think that I’m going to convince all of you to stand up for us. But I am speaking to those whom humanity still matters.”
- The actor commented on how the police captain who described the suspect as having “a very bad day” reminded him of how police also tried to minimize the attack on his sister.
- Daniel also joined actor Daniel Wu in helping to find the suspect who assaulted a 91-year man in Oakland by offering a $25,000 reward, NextShark previously reported.
- He considers his efforts as part of a collective, crediting the Asian American community as a whole for “standing up and speaking out in a way [he] hadn’t seen in a long time.”
Daniel Dae Kim will be the lead actor for the first time in the second season of National Geographic’s “The Hot Zone: Anthrax,” set to premiere on Nov. 28.
Boston man allegedly harasses Asian women dancing to K-pop for 'communism' and mask wearing
A video showing a man who allegedly harassed a group of Asian women for wearing masks while dancing to K-pop in public has gone viral on TikTok.
What happened: TikTok user @celenana_na and her K-pop dance group, Hush Crew, were filming a dance routine in Boston’s Downtown Crossing on Sunday when the incident occurred. What they thought was an ordinary interaction escalated after the man allegedly started talking about communism and they realized he was being racist.
The group was in between takes when the man first engaged with them, @celenana_na said in a follow-up post. There were others who approached them asking questions about their work, so they did not mind him at first.
@celenana_na said they thought the man was joking when he asked why they were wearing masks. “But then he started talking about communism and all that stuff, and that’s when it hit us that he was being racist toward us, just because we’re Asian people wearing masks,” she recalled.
@celenana_na claimed the man approached her boyfriend first. She decided to film the scene when the man increasingly got close to their space.
“Put that sh*t down,” the man says in the video while trying to grab @celenana_na’s phone. She yells in response, “No, this is America! I get to do whatever the f*ck I want. I get to wear [my mask], he gets to wear his mask.”
The video also shows a third man approaching the scene. He reportedly intervened by pulling the belligerent man to the side to keep the group safe.
@celenana_nawe have the right to wear masks like how he has the right to be ugly tf #stayc #stereotype #kpopinpublic #harrassed #asian #covid #kpop #kpopfyp♬ stereotype x dalla dalla - .
Reactions: The video has received more than 2 million views since it was first posted. Many TikTok users condemned the man’s behavior and expressed support for @celenana_na and her group.
“A grown man feeling threatened by a bunch of cute girls dancing. How embarrassing for him,” one user wrote.
Some believe the man should be charged with assault. Others say the incident was not surprising since it occurred in Downtown Crossing, a “diverse” but still “racist” area.
Other comments targeted the man’s race, which @celenana_na addressed in her follow-up video. “His race has nothing to do with this clip. It’s literally just about how we got singled out just because we were wearing masks, just because of ‘communism.’ There were a bunch of other people around us wearing masks too, but for some reason, he approached us about wearing masks and ‘communism,’” she said.
@celenana_na also discouraged people from pursuing the man: “This was just a small incident. I don’t think it’s worth finding him and making him lose anything,” she noted.

DC City Council Member Who Claimed Jews Control the Weather Announces Run for Mayor
Alana Goodman • October 13, 2021 5:10 pmA D.C. City Council member who claimed Jewish bankers control the weather is running for mayor, according to a Wednesday announcement.
Trayon White Sr. (D.) is the second city councilman this week to throw his hat into the mayoral race. He announced his candidacy on Instagram, in response to a post about Councilman Robert White (D.) launching his mayoral bid on Wednesday.
White's candidacy is likely to cause a stir due to his history of espousing anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. In 2018, he claimed that the Rothschilds—a historically wealthy Jewish family that is often the center of anti-Semitic assertions—manipulate the weather and control the levers of federal power.
"Man, it just started snowing out of nowhere this morning, man. Y'all better pay attention to this climate control, man, this climate manipulation," White said in a video he posted on Facebook. "And DC keep talking about, ‘We a resilient city,' and that's a model based off the Rothschilds controlling the climate to create natural disasters they can pay for to own the cities, man. Be careful." During a city council breakfast meeting, White also argued that "the Rothschilds—control the World Bank, as we all know—infusing dollars into major cities."
"They really pretty much control the federal government, and now they have this concept called resilient cities in which they are using their money and influence into local cities," he said.
White's comments drew condemnations from Jewish groups and anti-Semitism watchdogs at the time. He later agreed to visit the Holocaust museum with the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington in an attempt to make amends but left without explanation halfway through the 90-minute tour.
An adviser to Trayon White on Wednesday confirmed the run in a statement to D.C. radio station WAMU, saying the councilman "has a tremendous amount of support coming his way because he is willing to speak out for and advocate for those who need the leadership the most."
Incumbent mayor Muriel Bowser (D.) has yet to say if she will run for reelection.

VIDEO: NYC Woman Beaten, Stomped in Head During Alleged Robbery
Police have released video of two people’s alleged attack on a woman in Brooklyn last week that resulted in her being taken to the hospital unconscious.
The individual was believed to still be in the hospital as of Wednesday, one week after it happened, PIX 11 reported.
Police said the incident occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m. on October 6 on Powell Street in the Brownsville area.
Surveillance video showed the moment a man and woman approached the 30-year-old woman. The female suspect appeared to punch her in the head, causing her to fall headfirst into a fenced planter:
The female suspect then appeared to continue hitting the woman as she lay on the ground, which knocked her unconscious, according to authorities.
The male suspect reportedly took the woman’s purse, two cellphones, cash, and a neck chain, while the other suspect kept hitting her, police stated.
At one point in the video, the female suspect appeared to stomp on the woman’s head multiple times.
Police told Pix 11 the attack was not random, and they believe it was the result of an earlier encounter between the victim and the female suspect.
“The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment of trauma to her head and face, authorities said. She is expected to survive,” the outlet reported.
A Rasmussen poll released in August in partnership with the National Police Association (NPA) found 70 percent of American voters believe crime is “out of control,” while 22 percent disagreed.
“A majority of those polled believe poor policy has to do with this year’s increase in violent crimes, including the elimination of cash bail requirements in some jurisdictions,” Breitbart News reported.
“Seventy-three percent of voters say letting accused violent criminals out of jail without bail while they wait for trial increases violent crime. Fourteen percent disagree, and 13 percent are not sure,” the outlet said.
