A man in Chicago was denied bail following a shooting that left three people dead outside a bar Sunday during a birthday party.

Thirty-two-year-old Samuel Parsons-Salas faces three felony counts of first degree murder, one felony count of attempted first degree murder, and one felony count of kidnapping after the incident that happened outside Vera Lounge on W. School Street, Fox 32 reported.

The party was for a 25-year-old woman and the defendant was there with his girlfriend. When a fight broke out inside the building, the woman being celebrated was reportedly hit and a crowd spilled out onto the street.

The Fox article continued:

A 50-year-old man, identified by police as Rickey Vera, father of the woman who was hit, approached Parsons-Salas in the middle of School Street wanting to know who hit his daughter, prosecutors say.

Parsons-Salas’ girlfriend stood in between the two men. The defendant then fired his gun past his girlfriend three times striking Vera in the head and chest. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Meanwhile, surveillance footage captured the moment the group came outside the building and also recorded the sound of gunshots.

“Parsons-Salas has been convicted of robbery, aggravated battery, and was on parole for a 2010 home invasion. He was released only three months ago,” according to the Fox 32 video report.

The suspect allegedly fired six more times toward a 27-year-old man later identified as Mario Pozuelos, who was struck in his head and throat.

As Vera lay shot in the street, his daughter knelt near him and the defendant shot her in the head, then approached Pozuelos and shot him again in his head. After being taken to a hospital, the man was pronounced dead.

While running to the car where his girlfriend was, the suspect noticed a young woman named Mercedes Tavares hiding behind a van, whom he also allegedly shot once, then again when she fell on the ground.

When the suspect jumped in the car with his girlfriend, he allegedly held her at gunpoint and instructed her to drive to his home near Irving Park.

He later “forced her to go with him to an apartment on Montrose and when they got there she was not able to leave, prosecutors say,” the Fox report stated.

Per the Fox report, authorities arrested Parson-Salas Monday and they eventually located the girlfriend at the apartment but did not report she had been hurt.

Meanwhile, the young woman who had been celebrating her birthday was listed in critical condition at a local hospital.

As the crime wave sweeps across President Joe Biden’s (D) America, citizens are “more likely now than at any time over the past five decades to say there is more crime in their local area than there was a year ago,” Gallup reported in October.

“The 56% of U.S. adults who report an increase in crime where they live marks a five-percentage-point uptick since last year and is the highest by two points in Gallup’s trend dating back to 1972,” the article read.

A Florida pastor and his son are accused of fraudulently obtaining over $8 million in federal coronavirus relief funds for their family-run Christian ministry.

Evan Edwards and his son Josh Edwards were arrested early Wednesday morning in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. The two men are facing six charges, including conspiracy to commit bank fraud and visa fraud, according to NBC News.

The charges come two years after federal prosecutors filed a civil complaint against the family in December 2020, including against Evan’s wife, Mary Jane, and daughter, Joy.

The complaint alleges that Josh Edwards, on behalf of ASLAN International Ministries, Inc., submitted a false and fraudulent loan application seeking a $6 million loan from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) that was created under the CARES Act during the early days of the covid pandemic in March 2020.

In the loan application, Josh Edwards claimed ASLAN had 486 employees and a monthly payroll of $2.7 million. ASLAN ended up receiving $8.4 million from PPP.

However, prosecutors say that the Edwards family used that loan to purchase a $3.7 million luxury home near Walt Disney World Resort. “The remaining funds were transferred among multiple bank accounts held by the conspirators in an attempt to hide and conceal their whereabouts,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.

Furthermore, the recent federal indictment alleges that Josh Edwards wrote false information in their loan application on behalf of ASLAN, where their monthly payroll expenses, number of employees, and annual revenue were “significantly lower” than what was stated in the application, Law & Crime reported.

 

In April 2021, a federal judge ordered the family to forfeit the $8.4 million it obtained from PPP. The family did not challenge the ruling. Federal authorities also seized the $860,000 that was being held for the down payment on the luxury home, according to the civil forfeiture complaint.

A source familiar with the investigation told NBC News that officials started moving the case along after a report from the outlet that questioned why no family member had been indicted, despite the complaint being filed in December 2020.

Evan and Josh Edwards were set to appear before a federal judge in Orlando Wednesday, but Evan’s lawyer told the judge that he did not want to leave his wheelchair due to medical concerns, NBC affiliate WESH reported.  Evan also was seemingly nonverbal.

The judge then requested U.S. Marshals bring Evan to a medical facility.

Josh Edwards was present for the hearing but also appeared to be nonverbal with the judge. Despite the judge ordering a psychiatric evaluation of Josh, a federal attorney claimed he spoke to agents before appearing in court.

Evan Edwards grew up in Edmonton, Canada, and founded ASLAN International Ministries in 2005 in Ohio.

The Edwards family lived and operated ASLAN in Turkey, acting as missionaries in the predominately Muslim country, before applying to move the nonprofit organization to Florida in 2018, the Daily Mail reported. The family eventually purchased a property and moved to the Sunshine State that same year.

The family is also accused of fraudulently obtaining funds from Canada’s covid relief fund in 2020, receiving $2,000 each, ClickOrlando.com noted.

Homicides have surged to nearly 250 thus far in 2022 in Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s (D) New Orleans.

New Orleans police noted the city was at 248 homicides as of Monday of this week, FOX News reported. There were 218 homicides during all of 2021, and those 218 were the highest the city had seen in a year since 2005.

The death toll in 2022 has far surpassed 2021, and there are still two weeks left in the year.

FOX News observed that in September 2022 New Orleans became “the so-called murder capital of the country.”

The Metropolitan Crime Commission noted that as of September 18, “homicides [were] up 44 percent compared to 2021.”

By September 20 there “[had] been 218 carjackings in 2022, 343 shootings, and 397 armed robberies” in the city.

Mayor Cantrell is in the hot seat as homicides surge, FOX News pointed out, facing a recall effort amid allegations that the surge in violence has coincided with “questionable trips and expenditures” by the mayor.

Police: Elderly Woman Fatally Stabbed in Affluent Atlanta Neighborhood, Suspect Arrested

An elderly woman was found fatally stabbed in her home in the affluent Atlanta neighborhood of Buckhead Saturday, according to the Atlanta Police Department (APD).

Eleanor Bowles, 77, was discovered by her son with multiple wounds in her home garage at around 5:30 p.m. on Paces West Terrace. The son had come home to visit Bowles for the holiday season, APD Deputy Chief Charles Hampton said at a press conference Sunday.

“This is not a way that a family should have to spend their holiday season, mourning and grieving the death of a loved one,” Hampton said.

Police later identified Antonio Brown, 23, as the suspect who allegedly broke into the gated community and killed Bowles. He was arrested Monday night and is being held in a Fulton County Jail.

At some point between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Brown allegedly was in the process of stealing Bowles’s 2021 Lexus RS350 when it is believed she interrupted him. He then stabbed Bowles several times before taking off with the vehicle.

The SUV is believed to have been driven around Atlanta before it was discovered in DeKalb County Saturday night. It is unknown how Brown broke into the gated community, police say.

The APD released a person of interest photo Sunday. A resident later spotted the suspect and called the police, which led to the arrest of Brown, according to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens.

The 23-year-old man has since been charged with murder, aggravated battery, elder abuse, possession of a knife during the commission of a felony, and hijacking a motor vehicle.

Police say they are aware that local businesses are claiming to have had prior incidents with Brown but noted the investigation is still ongoing.

Brown’s arrest was announced at a press conference Monday night, where city officials also announced the arrest of a 16-year-old accused of murdering a 15-year-old and a 12-year-old.

Bowles’s family and friends have organized a GoFundMe page with all money raised going to the Atlanta Humane Society & Society For Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Georgia, an organization she loved.

“She was a kind, precious, funny, loving mother, grandmother, and friend — and so much more,” page organizer Alyssa Pettus wrote. “It is unbelievable that crimes like this continue to happen in Atlanta, and it must stop.”

Maryland Man Accused of Killing Pregnant Woman and Unborn Baby Gets 2 Murder Charges

A Maryland man has been charged with two counts of murder in the death of a woman and her 38-week old unborn baby, The Washington Post reported.

When police arrested Torrey Damien Moore, 31, for a separate fatal shooting of a convenience store clerk, they found the decomposing body of his pregnant 26-year-old girlfriend inside his Silver Spring apartment, authorities said on Monday. Police said the woman was shot seven times in early October.

Moore has since been charged in the deaths of the woman and her unborn baby and was ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

“Police and prosecutors in Montgomery County employed Maryland’s law against the “murder or manslaughter of viable fetus” in charging Moore. Under the statute, a person can be prosecuted for murder if he or she “intended to cause the death of the viable fetus,” Dan Morse wrote for the Post. “The law is specifically written to not apply to how Maryland addresses abortion. ‘Nothing in this section applies to or infringes on a woman’s right to terminate a pregnancy,’ the law states.”

Moore reportedly told police that his girlfriend had informed him she was pregnant with his child, officials said. Investigators are looking into the timelines of the woman’s death, including whether Moore traveled to California for a few weeks after allegedly shooting her. Investigators are also trying to determine how long Moore may have stayed in the apartment with her decomposing body.

Court records filed in Virginia and Maryland show Moore was also wanted by police on allegations of attacking the same woman in June, according to the report. The women told police Moore “punched and then choked her for about three minutes to the point she could not breathe,” Commander of the Montgomery County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit Capt. Sean Gagen said.

Moore has additionally been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of a convenience store clerk on Thursday. A SWAT team subsequently surrounded his apartment on Friday and later found the woman’s body on the bedroom floor. The shootings do not appear to be related, according to the report.

“It’s all completely senseless,” Gagen said. “The store clerk had just gone to work, trying to make a living. … The woman, she gets involved with the wrong person, and during a period of time where she should have been getting ready to celebrate the birth of her child, she gets killed.”

“It’s difficult to comprehend the level of evil some people can display,” Gagen added.

The woman’s DNA test is pending, so police did not identify her, though she underwent on autopsy on Saturday. Doctors found that she had been pregnant with a healthy baby boy.

Looting for Amusement and Luxury Goods

Walnut Creek is a quiet exurban town outside of San Francisco. It uncharacteristically made national news over the last few days, and not for anything good. It was the scene of a large-scale smash and grab in the wake of the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict.

Over a dozen vehicles pulled up to the Broadway Plaza shopping mall. Some eighty vandals, some wielding crowbars, ran inside Nordstrom and stole merchandise.  Five Nordstrom employees were physically assaulted.

The action was said to be over in less than a minute. With their bounty in hand, estimated at $200,000, the thieves drove off in different directions. Only three were apprehended. Of those, one was illegally carrying a firearm.

The media has omitted the race of the perpetrators, a policy that ironically makes race even more salient. Video footage shows the perpetrators were black. Eyewitness accounts confirm that. And the same tactic and demographic makeup were seen at the Louis Vuitton smash and grab earlier in San Francisco.

The neighborhood blogs are filled with discussions. Liberals predictably claim this is because of the divide between the haves and have nots. Others have opined that it is part of the no justice, no peace result of the Rittenhouse verdict. And, of course, there was the inevitable search for root causes, which are always looked for and never really found, at least not empirically.

The cause few want to talk about is what happened at the same mall during the George Floyd riots, in June of 2020. Then our police and civic leaders decided to have the police stand in place. Macy’s was ransacked by hordes of young people who sometimes fought among themselves because some were perceived to have acquired better loot than others.

In the wake of the George Floyd case, our civic leaders, in their infinite wisdom, decided the optics of arresting young black people would not be good. It would be better to let them sate their appetite for theft. On the way out of the mall area, one vandal shot a firearm into a crowd of shoppers, hitting a young black woman in the arm. The police that were the object of the rioters’ derision were quickly giving her first aid and securing transport to the regional medical center.

So, it is not surprising that our mall was once again targeted. After all, during the first smash and grab at Macy’s, the thieves were not stopped. The police stood there like a bunch of robots whose batteries had gone dead. I doubt the rank and file desired this. This was a decision that most likely came from our cowardly civic leaders, who were more worried about optics than public safety.

New York policing has taught us the virtues of the concept of broken windows. Don’t fix the small things in a neighborhood and soon you have big things with which to deal. Start with the broken windows because societal neglect and crime are intertwined.  Show that minor infractions are not going to be tolerated. In New York, dealing with broken windows has put a big damper on crime.

Our civic leaders chose the opposite perspective. Let them run wild. Let them steal. Let them flee without obstruction, and they will simply go away. Of course, the civic leaders didn’t think that they had now provided an open invitation for thieves to return for another round.

We will shortly hear from academic pundits about black rage, a theory that is used to justify all sorts of anti-social and criminal behavior. Stealing Louis Vuitton luxury goods will be justified because of the legacy of slavery and discrimination. Only harebrained academics take such nonsense seriously.

An organized criminal enterprise is not the consequence of episodic rage, but of a purposeful undertaking. And before we get too hung up on the race of the perpetrators, we should consider that a lot of different kinds of people will be buying these luxury goods on social media, knowing they are stolen.

On the streets of San Francisco, a city where shoplifting under $950 is a misdemeanor, street vendors hawk stolen goods in original wrapping, sometimes just yards from the stores from which they were stolen. Walgreens is closing twenty-two stores in San Francisco, and communities are whining about a prescription desert, but not taking social action to prevent the ongoing plague of theft.

We have a criminal underclass in our society, one that festers and then finds excuses to explode. While my white suburban neighbors have had their societal equilibrium disturbed as a result of the violence and chaos at Nordstrom, inner-city minorities deal with these problems every day, and our criminal justice system ignores them.

We are becoming acclimated to violence. Gangs shooting at each other on Interstate 880 and killing a two-year-old is just another day in Oakland. On Route 4, near Oakley, there was gunfire from a housing development at passing vehicles headed west. Our public hospitals are overrun with shooting victims, usually as part of ongoing gang wars.

There is no leadership. But there is hypocrisy. The so-called congressional “Squad” calls for defunding the police but hires private security for its own protection. An open border brings in desperate people without relevant economic skills. How will they survive? The media find both justification and sanctification for the riots it deems politically appropriate: witness Minneapolis, Portland, and Seattle.  In so doing, the media provide legitimacy to thuggery.

The separation between the haves and the have nots is really a separation between the elites and the ordinary, hard-working citizens. The elites have joined with the underclass, but in the end, those who rule with an absence of the heart, as Alexis de Tocqueville noted, are to be vanquished in a single historical night. It will not come soon enough.

Four people were pronounced dead following an attempted traffic stop in Maryland, as a manhunt was underway in the state for two former police officers who were considered armed and dangerous. On Thursday night, police confirmed two of the deceased were the former officers.

Three passengers were pronounced dead at the scene in Smithsburg late Thursday afternoon, including a female driver, an adult man and one child, according to Maryland State Police.

Blacks are also overrepresented among perpetrators of hate crimes—by 50 percent—according to the most recent Justice Department data from 2017; whites are underrepresented by 24 percent. This is particularly true for anti-gay and anti-Semitic hate crimes.

 

 

Police defunded, cash bail ended, firearm deaths up, and black men -- by far -- hardest hit

Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats make a big deal about firearm deaths being up in order to push gun-grabbing, background checks, ammo control, lawsuits against gun manufacturers, and gun control, presumably to stop it.

But a closer look at the statistics tells another story.

According to the University of Houston's Professor Craig Pirrong, who writes the Streetwise Professor blog:

The increase in gun homicides documented in the Emory University study is attributable almost exclusively to one factor: a nearly 60 percent increase in homicide fatalities among black men. Not over a period of many years–but in a little over one year.

And what year was that? 2020. And what happened in 2020? The death of George Floyd, and the subsequent revelation that black lives especially matter.

Yes, but not in the way intended. Not by a long shot. That death and revelation brought in its train myriad consequences. Defund the police. The war on cash bail and the release of numerous criminals. The demoralization of police, who were instructed explicitly and implicitly that arresting black male offenders was a career risk, and the subsequent surrender of the streets to the thugs. And on and on. (The release of many from jail because of COVID didn’t help either.)

This is as close to a natural experiment as can exist in social science. An exogenous shock–the death of one man–leads to a tectonic shift in law enforcement, especially with regards to a particular demographic. The result?: a hyperbolic increase in homicide rates in that demographic.

He runs a chart showing an absolutely exponential rise in firearm deaths of black men, with much smaller upticks in deaths of Hispanic and white men, the latter attributed to suicide in the original Wall Street Journal report that is linked (subscription only).

The deaths, he argues, are not ultimately due to the existence of firearms, but to "a particular social pathology enabled by a social psychosis that reached epidemic proportions in 2020," and he calls the data "irrefutable."

So it seems that all the Black Lives Matter protests, which I have noted here were most enthusiastically embraced by white women, who with others outnumbered blacks six to one at the BLM protests, were really all about mansions for the organizers -- and now, higher death rates from firearms for black men. 

Those are the victims hardest hit, and by a monstrous margin. And that's what those protests brought to them.

It's as if these virtue-signalling, sanctimonious, and self-abasing white women leading these protests, who drew expressions of contempt from black leaders such as BET Chairman Robert Johnson, were actually trying to pick off black people just as their Klan forebears once did, even as they claimed to champion black people.

As they protested and called for police defunding -- a very unpopular cause among black voters by the way -- they projected their white-women reality, that they can probably live without police given that none of them own or use or have an interest in a firearm onto black people who must deal with the consequences of emptied prisons and criminals on the loose in marginalized neighborhoods. A lot of innocent people have died in these shootings, yet the ruling orthodoxy, embraced by these white women, and assorted Black Lives Matter huckster radicals, continues to call for ending cash bail and throttling the police, with no concern for the consequences for black men.

Those deaths are now on these do-gooders, and the press that enabled them. Where's the press with this new incontrovertible data now? As usual, asleep at the switch.

At Least 25 Shot During Weekend in Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s Chicago

At least 25 people were shot, six of them fatally, during the weekend in Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s (D) Chicago.

ABC 7 / Chicago Sun-Times reported a 36-year-old man standing on the sidewalk “in the first block of East 40th Street” was shot about 8:20 p.m. Friday. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Twenty-seven-year-old Felicia Cortes crashed and died after being shot while “driving in the 2700 block of North Pulaski Road” Saturday. The incident occurred just after 1 a.m.

A 32-year-old man in an alley in “the first block of West 105th Street” was shot multiple times and killed Saturday about 7 p.m.

On Sunday morning about 2:30 a.m. a shooting outside a Belmont Cragin bar left three dead. The shooting outside came on the heels of a fight inside.

WGN-TV named the three deceased victims: 50-year-old Ricky Vera, 26-year-old Mario Pozuelos, and 24-year-old Mercedes Tavares.

The Sun-Times noted that 658 people were killed in Chicago January 1, 2022, through December 11, 2022.

Police: Woman Took Carjacker’s Gun, Shot Him in Head

A Nevada woman took away a carjacker’s gun in Las Vegas, tried to flee, then ended up shooting the carjacker dead when he tackled her from behind, according to police.

FOX News reports that the incident occurred November 19, 2022, but a police report was just released, providing details.

FOX 5 notes that the woman and a friend pulled up outside a residence where a party was scheduled to occur. The woman and her friend were early, so they sat in the car to wait for the party to start.

While they waited, two men with guns allegedly approached their vehicle, and one of the men grabbed her shirt and pulled her out of the car.

The man then got into her car and put his gun down in his lap. The woman grabbed the gun and took off running.

The police report indicates the suspect chased the woman and tackled her, at which point she shot the suspect in the head, fatally wounding him.

The second carjacking suspect allegedly opened fire on the woman, so she fled into a nearby backyard and hid.

The second carjacking suspect, Jaylin Morrison, was arrested on December 2, 2022.

Concealed Carrier Shoots Two Alleged Robbers in Chicago

A concealed carry permit holder shot and wounded two alleged car thieves Saturday just after 3:30 a.m. in Chicago.

The concealed carrier was walking “to his car from the Cambria Hotel, 32 West Randolph” when someone in a red SUV allegedly shot at him, CWBChicago noted.

ABC 7 reported the concealed carrier pulled his gun and returned fire, striking two individuals who sought medical treatment for gunshot wounds.

Both suspects were taken into custody when they sought medical help.

On November 13, 2022, Breitbart News reported that a concealed carrier in Chicago shot and killed an alleged robber.

ABC 7 / Chicago Sun-Times reported, “A man walked into the store and pulled out a gun to start a robbery” and the concealed carrier responded by pulling his own gun and shooting the alleged robber.

On December 5, 2022, Breitbart News observed that a concealed carry permit holder shot and wounded two alleged robbers.

FOX 32 reported that the concealed permit holder was in a car when three teenagers drove up in another vehicle and one of the teens got out and allegedly pointed a gun at the permit holder.

A struggle ensued between the teenager and the permit holder, and the permit holder opened fire, wounding two of the suspects.

Chicago’s Protections for Felons, Gang Members Ensures Zero Criminal Illegal Aliens are Turned Over to Feds

The sanctuary city of Chicago is turning zero criminal illegal aliens over to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency for arrest and deportation in part thanks to Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s (D) protections for gang members and felons.

In the third quarter of 2022, city records show that none of the three ICE detainers filed with Chicago police — requesting custody of criminal illegal aliens — were honored. Likely hundreds, potentially thousands, more illegal aliens were arrested in Chicago during the period, but ICE agents have been restricted in issuing detainers by the Biden administration.

The refusal to honor any ICE detainers by Chicago officials is the result of Lightfoot’s expanded sanctuary city policy.

In February 2021, Lightfoot signed the expansion which prohibited local police from cooperating with ICE even in cases where arrested illegal aliens are in the gang database, are convicted felons, have pending criminal charges, or have outstanding warrants.

Lightfoot’s expansion came after former Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) signed Chicago’s initial sanctuary city policy into law in 2012 which prohibited police from questioning suspects about their immigration status.

Emanuel’s sanctuary city policy was later expanded in 2016 to mandate that “city employees treat documented and undocumented immigrants with respect and dignity.”
