10K Migrants Apprehended, Got Away Last Week in One Texas Border Sector

Del Rio Sector Border Patrol agents apprehended nearly 7,000 migrants along the Texas border with Mexico last week. In addition, another 3,400 migrants got away without being apprehended.

Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Jason D. Owens tweeted a weekly recap indicating that his agents apprehended 6,923 migrants during a seven-day period last week. In addition, Chief Owens reported an additional 3,403 migrants classified as got-aways.

This brought the total known border crossers to 10,326.

The apprehended migrants came to the United States from 79 different countries. They included 13 criminal aliens, three sex offenders, and one person with a firearm, Owens reported.

The agents encountered seven large migrant groups. This is down significantly from previous weekly reports.

This is the first weekly recap from the Del Rio Sector since December 12, 2022, when Owens reported the apprehension of nearly 11,000 migrants. That tweet also reports 3,208 known got-aways and a total of nearly 14,000 known border crossers.

Breitbart Texas’s Randy Clark reported in December that the Department of Homeland Security put a gag order on CBP employees. The order, reviewed by Breitbart, prohibited Border Patrol managers from releasing any interim arrest statistics such as the weekly recaps tweeted by Owens and other Border Patrol sector chiefs.

Clark reported:

The order was sent under the title “DHS OPA guidance on social media coordination for the lifting of Title 42.” The order was later clarified to impose a ban on the direct communication with outlets or platforms regarding the release of migrant apprehension statistics without DHS approval. DHS OPA is the acronym for the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Public Affairs.

The CBP source is alarmed by the policy’s intent to remove highly visible images and real-time statistics from the public domain. The source told Breitbart Texas the new directive will allow DHS to control the narrative as the looming border crisis is expected to worsen after Title 42.

Now that the end of Title 42 has been postponed, the Biden administration appears to have lifted the gag order. Now that numbers are falling, apprehension statistics appear to be more readily available.

Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents continue to apprehend large numbers of migrants crossing the border from Mexico to southern Arizona. The large groups totaled nearly 200 migrants from at least seven different nations during a two-day period last week.

Tucson Sector Chief Patrol Agent John R. Modlin tweeted a photo of a group of migrants apprehended by Ajo Station agents near Lukeville, Arizona, on January 9. The group of 52 migrants crossed the border in a rural area.

The 52 migrants came to the U.S. from seven countries located in North and South America and Asia.

One day earlier, Ajo Station agents encountered two more groups of migrants. The two groups that crossed during a two-hour period totaled 117 migrants, Modlin reported.

The two groups of 55 and 62 migrants came from seven different countries. The large-group crossing tied up numerous agents for long periods of time for processing and transportation.

Modlin tweeted another report detailing 1,380 apprehensions in the Tucson Sector on January 11 and 12.

In Mexico Relationship, Biden Prioritizes 'Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion' Over Immigration and National Security

Meeting with Mexican president comes amid record migrant encounters and escalating cartel violence

President Joe Biden passed up a chance last week to press his Mexican counterpart about the unprecedented border crisis and escalating cartel violence. Instead, he chose to discuss "diversity, equity, and inclusion" and "climate change" initiatives.

One day after Biden's Jan. 9 sitdown with Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the White House released a list of six "commitments" secured through the meeting. At the top of that list is a pledge to advance "diversity, equity, and inclusion," with Biden and López Obrador vowing to "promote racial justice," "expand protections for LGBTQI+ individuals," and "foster Indigenous-led growth." Second on the list is a commitment to "tackle the climate crisis" and implement "ambitious cuts to emissions."  National security and immigration, however, ranked much lower—Biden listed those issues last and third to last, respectively.

Biden's decision to place equity at the forefront of his Mexico meeting came amid an ongoing crisis at the southern border, and one Republican lawmaker told the Washington Free Beacon Biden's focus on diversity is unserious. Illegal immigration soared to record levels last year, with migrant apprehensions topping 2.3 million, a 37 percent increase from the 1.7 million seen in 2021. The American people, meanwhile, want action on the border: 54 percent of midterm voters identified immigration as a "very important" issue, a November Pew Research Center poll found, compared with just 34 percent and 38 percent who identified racial issues and climate change, respectively. Still, immigration went "largely unaddressed" during Biden's meeting with López Obrador, Bloomberg reported, because the two sides "ran out of time."

Rep. Mike Waltz (R., Fla.), who last week urged Biden to use the Mexico meeting to "take serious steps to secure our border," called the Democrat's focus on diversity "ridiculous." Waltz highlighted the wave of cartel violence seen across Mexico prior to Biden's visit, violence that the Republican says will only expedite the flow of drugs into the United States as the Mexican Army takes "dozens of casualties per week."

"Our border is being controlled by the cartels, and the Biden administration clearly doesn't want to deal with it in a serious way," Waltz told the Free Beacon. "It's disappointing and a huge missed opportunity."

The White House did not return a request for comment.

While Biden did touch on immigration and national security at the bottom of his commitment list, neither section is likely to satisfy border hawks. That's because Biden's immigration section, which is titled "Migration and Development," does not mention border security. Instead, it pledges to "address the root causes of irregular migration and forced displacement" and collaborate with Mexico to "counter xenophobia and discrimination against migrants and refugees." Biden's "Regional Security" section, meanwhile, includes a commitment to "integrate a gender perspective" into the United States' and Mexico's response to natural disasters, given the "differentiated impact disasters have on women and girls."

The Biden administration's focus on diversity while in Mexico went beyond the White House. On Jan. 10, Biden's State Department issued a "Declaration on the North American Partnership for Equity and Racial Justice," which saw secretaries of state from the United States, Mexico, and Canada declare their commitment to "affirmatively advance equity and racial justice," "engage communities with lived experience of racism and discrimination," and "reflect the diversity of our nations in our federal public services workforce."

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than 1.5 tons of marijuana at a South Texas port of entry on January 14. Officials reported the value of the drugs to be in excess of $7.5 million.

CBP officers assigned to the World Trade Bridge in Laredo, Texas, observed a 2004 Freightliner tractor-trailer approaching for inspection for entry into the United States from Mexico, according to a statement from Laredo Field Office officials. The officers referred the driver to a secondary inspection station.

A search of the trailer by a K-9 team and non-intrusive inspection systems led to the discovery of the possibility of drugs being smuggled in a commercial shipment of cotton candy.

A physical search of the trailer led to the discovery of 3,373.51 pounds of what is believed to be marijuana. Officials report the value of the load to be $7,546,946.

The officers seized the drugs. The smuggling incident is being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations special agents, officials stated.

“World Trade Bridge officers have maintained a robust enforcement posture and seized this significant marijuana load in the cargo environment,” said Port Director Albert Flores, Laredo Port of Entry. “CBP remains committed to advancing CBP’s priority border security mission while effectively facilitating lawful trade and travel.”

A few days earlier, CBP officers assigned to the Brownsville-Matamoros International Bridge seized more than $930,000 in undeclared currency being smuggled from Texas into Mexico, Breitbart Texas reported.

'Horrific Massacre': Police Link Mass Shooting That Took Baby's Life to Drug Cartels

(Reuters)—Six people including a six-month-old baby cradled in the arms of her 17-year-old mother were shot dead at a home in California's main agricultural valley on Monday in what authorities called a targeted attack and "horrific massacre."

Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux linked the killings to the illegal drug trade, saying deputies had conducted a drug-related search warrant at the same home last week.

"We believe this was a message being sent," Boudreaux told reporters at the scene. "We believe that this was a targeted family."

Two suspects remained at large, he said.

Authorities responded early on Monday after multiple shots were heard. Some victims were found in the street while others were discovered in the house.

One victim was alive and wounded when authorities arrived but later died at a hospital, Boudreaux said.

The attacks occurred in Goshen, a farm community of 5,400 people about midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The bodies of the infant and 17-year-old mother were located in a ditch outside the home, Boudreaux later told the Los Angeles Times. Both had gunshot wounds to the head.

Several others were shot in the head, including an elderly woman. Two women survived by hiding in a trailer on the property.

"I think it's specifically connected to the cartel. The level of violence ... this was not your run-of-the-mill low-end gang member," Boudreaux told the newspaper.

"If (they) are specifically shooting everyone in the head, they know what they are doing ... (and) they are comfortable with what they are doing."

The newspaper reported that last week's search warrant resulted in one arrest and the seizure of guns, marijuana, and methamphetamine.

THE REALITY is that illegals jump our open borders by invitation and they come

to loot. They go where the looting is best. CA? California hands illegals nearly $40

billion in social services on the state level and those figures regardless of CA's

deficits, only go up. The County of Los An

geles, on top of these numbers, hands illegals $1.5 billion YEARLY.

Missouri Senator Claire McCaskillhas identified California Senator Kamala Harris as the party leader on issues of immigration and race. Harris wants a moratorium on construction of new immigration-detention facilities in favor of the old “catch and release” policy for illegal aliens, and has urged a shutdown of the government rather than compromise on mass amnesty.

"Kids are being raped by cartel members. Tons of drugs are flooding across the border that will kill Americans. Millions of illegal aliens are flooding across the border," the lawmaker tweeted Tuesday.

As reported by Breitbart Texas, the arrest of migrants with existing criminal records has risen more than 350 percent since 2020. According to CBP, the number of migrants who have criminal convictions for Homicide and Manslaughter rose from 3 encounters in 2020 to more than 60 in 2022. More than 120 migrants with homicide or manslaughter convictions have been encountered since January 2021 — compared to 11 during the Trump era. The increase reflects those convicted of prior offenses committed in the United States.

EAGLE PASS, Texas — Despite a recent slowdown in migrant crossings in the Del Rio Sector, five convicted sex offenders were arrested trying to elude detection over a recent 14-day period.

During the last week of December, Border Patrol agents in Del Rio arrested Mario Alberto Garcia-Mejia, a Guatemalan national allegedly attempting to sneak through a highway immigration checkpoint. Interviewing agents discovered 28-year-old Garcia-Mejia had two previous felony convictions sexual abuse of a minor in 2021.

Just before New Year’s Day, agents in Brackettville arrested Klever Yunga Pando, a 43-year-old Ecuadorian with three other migrants walking through a private ranch. A check of the criminal database revealed Yunga-Pando to be a previously convicted sex offender. Yunga-Pando was convicted of sexual abuse with a person under 11 years old and acting in manner to injure a child under 17- years-old in New York in 2021.

During the first week of January, agents arrested an additional three migrants also previously convicted of sex offenses in the United States. On January 2, agents discovered six migrants aboard a northbound freight train in Spofford, Texas. Among the group was Juan Zertuche-Castillo. The 45-year-old from Mexico was discovered to have been convicted in 2003 of indecency with a child in San Antonio.

On January 5, agents in Eagle Pass arrested 27-year-old Daniel Barrientos-Salazar of Mexico. Agents soon discovered he had two felony convictions in Dallas for indecency with a child and failure to register as a sex offender.

On the same day, Brackettville agents arrested six migrants attempting to avoid detection on a ranch. Within the group was Ricardo Nino-Espinoza, a 43-year-old Mexican national. Agents discovered he had been previously convicted of sexual assault in 2011 in Austin, Texas.

The criminal penalties for convicted felons returning to the United States are significant. According to CBP, each of the migrants arrested during this period are amenable to a felony charge under Title 8 USC § 1326 – Re-entry after Deportation. If convicted, they could face a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

El Paso Sector Border Patrol agents operating in Texas and New Mexico interdicted nearly 50 human smuggling incidents in the last week. The interdictions led to the apprehension of nearly 300 migrants.

Border Patrol officials highlighted three of the 49 migrant smuggling interdictions during the past week. Ysleta Station Border Patrol agents patrolling in Texas along U.S. Highway 62/180 on January 9 encountered a dark-colored pickup truck. Inside the truck, several people attempted to conceal themselves, according to a statement provided to Breitbart Texas.

Agents stopped the vehicle and conducted an immigration inspection. During the inspection, the agents identified seven migrants as being Mexican nationals without authorization to be in the United States, officials stated. The agents screened the migrants and expelled them to Mexico under Title 42 authority.

The agents also identified the driver of the smuggling vehicle as a Mexican national. Agents arrested the driver who will face prosecution for human smuggling under 8 USC 1324, officials reported.

The following day, Deming Station agents assigned to an interior tactical immigration checkpoint observed six vehicles driving in tandem. During the inspection, several individuals attempted to flee on foot. Agents detained the people in short order, officials stated.

In total, agents found 38 migrants who were being smuggled in the six vehicles. Agents identified the migrants, including unaccompanied minors, as citizens of Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. The agents also identified all six drivers as citizens of Mexico. The drivers now face federal charges of Conspiracy to Transport migrants under 8 USC 1324, the statement continues.

Deming Station agents patrolling New Mexico State Road 26 observed a suspicious black SUV and conducted an immigration inspection stop on January 11. The agents found eight migrants attempting to conceal themselves in the SUV, officials stated. The agents identified the migrants as citizens of Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico. The group included one unaccompanied child.

Agents arrested the driver, a U.S. legal permanent resident for conspiracy to transport.

Officials stated that the migrants amenable to Title 42 were expelled to Mexico. The remaining migrants were transported to the El Paso Central Processing Center and will be processed under Title 8.

“Transnational Criminal Organizations continue to recklessly endanger the lives of the migrants they smuggle for their own financial gain and with no regard for human life.” El Paso Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Peter Jaquez said in the statement. “Human smuggling is a federal crime and the El Paso Sector will continue to work diligently with our U.S. Attorney partners in the West Texas District and the State of New Mexico to prosecute smugglers that endanger and exploit migrants.”

Officials report that during FY22, which ended on September 30, 2022, arrests by El Paso Sector agents led to 642 prosecutions of human smuggling-related charges. During the first two months of FY23, arrests led to 141 cases.
