Crime in the nation’s capital has gotten so out of hand that the Mexican government is warning its citizens "to take precautions" "in areas previously considered safe" in Washington, D.C.

The Mexican consulate in Washington, D.C., released a statement Tuesday evening warning the "Mexican community" about the "significant increase in crime." The consulate told Mexicans in the city to "call 911" if they are "in an emergency" and also provided an emergency number for "consular assistance."

Although Mexico is known for its lawlessness, its homicide rate is not much higher than Washington, D.C.’s. In 2021, the district saw 23.52 homicides per 100,000 people. Mexico saw 28 per 100,000 in 2018.

The warning comes as the nation's capital battles rising crime. Washington, D.C., has recorded at least 138 homicides this year, 21 in the month of July alone. Although most cities across the United States are seeing an ebb in violent crime, Washington, D.C., has recorded a 37 percent increase in violent crime and a 19 percent increase in homicide this year.

Aside from the dramatic uptick in violent crime, Washington, D.C., has been shaken by a number of high-profile violent assaults and murders. Democratic Rep. Angie Craig (Minn.) was attacked in her building just blocks away from the Capitol in February, and a senior staffer for Sen. Rand Paul (R., Ky.) nearly died after he was stabbed near his place of work. Both suspects in those cases had a lengthy criminal record but were allowed to roam the streets.

VIDEO: Cartel Gunmen Attack Mexican Police Checkpoint near Texas Border

A group of cartel terrorists attacked a Mexican police checkpoint in the border state of Coahuila, setting off a fierce shootout. In a span of five days, cartel gunmen carried out four separate attacks on police forces, with the latest taking place on Tuesday morning.

The attack began on Sunday morning near the police checkpoint in Hidalgo, Coahuila, located along the highway connecting the border city of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, with Piedras Negras, Coahuila. A group of gunmen believed to be with the Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas pulled up to the checkpoint and began shooting at a squad of Coahuila state police officers.

Breitbart Texas obtained a video from one of the attacks where barrages of gunfire can be heard. In the initial attack, no casualties or injuries were reported. However, in Tuesday’s attack, a state police officer sustained some injuries and had to be rushed to a local hospital in Piedras Negras. An officer with the Coahuila Attorney General’s Office also sustained injuries while responding to the scene to provide backup to the officers. The officer crashed his patrol car into another vehicle. That officer is expected to make a full recovery.

It remains unclear if the cartel gunmen sustained injuries or casualties as they carried out any possibly wounded gunmen when they fled.

CDN-Los Zetas has been sending teams of gunmen to carry out the attacks at various hours — particularly at night or in the early morning. Since the weekend, cartel gunmen have carried out at least four separate attacks on law enforcement. Despite the efforts by authorities to track down the gunmen, they could not make any arrests.

As Breitbart Texas reported, CDN-Los Zetas sent large squads numbering more than 50 and, at times, over 100 gunmen to attack police forces in Coahuila. Unlike Tamaulipas, Coahuila is one of the states that has been actively fighting off the attacks from the CDN-Los Zetas, who are based in Nuevo Laredo and have been trying to expand their territories. CDN has also been waging a fierce turf war with the Gulf Cartel in Reynosa for control of lucrative drug and human smuggling routes.

The region provides a considerable challenge to Mexican law enforcement authorities as the gunmen routinely cross into the neighboring states of Nuevo Leon or Tamaulipas when fleeing from authorities.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to Mexico City and the states of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and their original Spanish. This article was written by “J.M. Martinez” and “C.E. Herrera” from Coahuila.

Mexican Police Arrest Human Smuggler, Migrants in Cloned Border Patrol Truck

Municipal police in Mexico arrested an alleged human smuggler and 16 migrants after the group attempted to enter the United States by cutting through a border fence. The police found the group in a cloned U.S. Border Patrol pickup truck.

U.S. Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens tweeted a group of photos showing Mexican police arresting a group of migrants. The photos show a white pickup truck with markings applied to resemble a Border Patrol vehicle.

Owens reported the smugglers attempted to cut through the border fence in the El Centro Sector. The Border Patrol agents responded to the incident after observing the smugglers using a cutting torch to attempt a breach of the border fence.

The agents stopped the crossing attempt as Mexican police arrived and placed the 17 subjects under arrest, Owens stated.

Breitbart Texas reported in September 2022 that El Centro Sector agents using video surveillance cameras observed what they believed to be a cloned Border Patrol SUV crossing the border from Mexico. The agents engaged the smuggler who refused to stop and led agents on a pursuit.

Then El Centro Sector Chief Patrol Agent Gregory K. Bovino tweeted photos of a Chevrolet Tahoe with a fake U.S. Border Patrol livery. The vehicle also did not have emergency lights.

Chief Bovino was recently removed as sector chief by the Biden administration in what appeared to be a retaliatory action following the chief’s transcribed testimony about the current state of the border, Breitbart Texas reported. The removal came within hours of the chief providing the written testimony to the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability and the House Committee on Homeland Security.

Bovino is now assigned to what is described as “a vague, indefinite, and temporary headquarters assignment as punishment for the voluntary transcribed interview about the border situation he provided to both committees on July 12, 2023.”

The use of cloned vehicles by migrant smugglers is not an uncommon occurrence.

As far back as 2015, smugglers utilized a fake Border Patrol vehicle, Breitbart Texas reported. Laredo Sector agents found the vehicle near Cotulla, Texas, approximately 65 miles from the border with Mexico.

Tucson Sector agents found ten more migrants being smuggled in a cloned patrol vehicle. In this case, the driver also appeared to be wearing the uniform of a federal agent.

Smugglers also utilize other official-looking vehicles to sneak their cargo into the U.S. interior.

Last month, Douglas Station agents in the Tucson Sector found a fake fire department vehicle smuggling migrants near the border wall.

Smugglers also used a stolen EMS vehicle in August 2018 to attempt to sneak a load of migrants through the Falfurrias Border Patrol Checkpoint on U.S. Highway 281 in Brooks County, Texas.

Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents apprehended nearly 5,300 migrants during the past four days, according to a law enforcement source. The sector continues to lead the nation in migrant apprehensions following a recent shift from the Texas-based border sector.

During a four-day period ending July 24, Tucson Sector agents apprehended 5,281 migrants who mostly crossed the border illegally between ports of entry. A large percentage of the migrants crossing the border in this sector are not seeking to surrender and seek asylum.

The week before, agents apprehended approximately 9,000 migrants, Tucson Sector Chief Patrol Agent John Modlin tweeted.

During the month of June, Tucson Sector agents apprehended 24,360 migrants who crossed between ports of entry. This brought the year-to-date total for the sector to 234,667 migrant apprehensions. In comparison, agents apprehended only 195,115 during the same period last year. The numbers are up significantly from the totals in FY20 and FY21.

The Tucson Sector is the only non-Texas-based southwest border sector showing increased migrant apprehensions this year over last.

In the five Texas-based border sectors, agents apprehended just over one million migrants during the first nine months of FY22. This year’s apprehension of nearly 908,000 migrants represents a more than 11 percent drop.

The drop follows increased border security measures by Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star, Breitbart Texas reported.

“Governor Abbott launched Operation Lone Star in March 2021 to fill in the dangerous gaps created by President Biden’s reckless open border policies,” Andrew Mahaleris, press secretary to Governor Greg Abbott told Breitbart Texas. “States like Arizona are following President Biden’s lead, allowing even more migrants to surge into our country while Texas is holding the line.”

“Under Operation Lone Star, Texas National Guard soldiers and DPS troopers have apprehended over 393,000 illegal immigrants, repelled more than 49,000 illegal immigrants, seized over 422 million lethal doses of fentanyl and over 8,000 weapons, and arrested over 31,000 criminals – all of which would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and our country thanks to President Biden’s open border policies,” Abbott’s press secretary concluded. “Until President Biden steps up and does his job, Texas will continue utilizing every tool and strategy to respond to this border crisis.”
