House Republicans Subpoena Biden Administration For Afghan Refugee Records Amid Rising Terror Threats

House Republicans on Tuesday subpoenaed the Department of Homeland Security for information about Afghan refugees as intelligence officials warn of increased threats of a terrorist attack in the United States.

The Biden administration has stonewalled congressional inquiries into security screenings of the almost 90,000 Afghan refugees who have entered the United States since 2021, Republicans on the House Homeland Security Committee say in a Tuesday letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

"In the wake of the Biden administration’s catastrophic withdrawal from Afghanistan, the country has once again become a breeding ground for foreign terrorist organizations under Taliban rule," Homeland Security Committee chairman Mark Green (R., Tenn.) said in a statement. "The Committee is still seeking answers on how the Biden administration vetted those entering the United States following the withdrawal."

The Homeland Security Committee’s inquiry comes as intelligence officials warn that recent Hamas attacks could inspire other Islamic extremists to plan attacks. FBI director Christopher Wray testified to the House on Tuesday that "the ongoing war in the Middle East has raised the threat of an attack against Americans in the United States to a whole other level."

Republicans initially asked the Department of Homeland Security for a full accounting of the Afghan refugee vetting process in 2021. Since then, Green said, those requests "were met with insufficient responses from the Biden administration."

The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to a request for comment.

Republicans have long contested that the Biden administration had no protocol to vet the Afghan nationals who were granted refugee status following the United States’ botched withdrawal from the country. Many of the Afghans granted entry to the country, internal government communications show, did not own a passport when they landed in the United States.

In response to repeated requests from congressional Republicans, the Biden administration has turned over reports with 150 pages of redactions and other edits. Other data provided by the Biden administration, Green says, were "nothing more than scanned printouts from spreadsheets of data that were provided in a format that rendered them indecipherable."

Republicans are now using their legal authority to get a full picture on how those Afghan refugees were admitted. The subpoena covers all communications for more than a dozen agencies related to the vetting of Afghan refugees. The Department of Homeland Security has until Nov. 7 to comply.

Biden administration officials informed lawmakers in a classified December 2021 briefing that "not all security and vetting measures have been taken to ensure the safety of our homeland."

Since the United States exited Afghanistan, the Taliban has taken full control of the country.

How Many Hamas and Hezbollah Terrorists Have Crossed the Southern Border?

"We have a continuing concern about Iranian influence, actors and Hezbollah."

When then-FBI Director Robert Mueller testified in the House Judiciary Committee on May 9, 2012, Republican Rep. Elton Gallegly of California asked him about the threat of terrorists entering the United States by crossing the Southern border.

“First of all, as it relates to our Southwest border,” said Gallegly, “do you see any growing evidence of al-Qaida or any other terrorist organization working to exploit our border with the attempt of launching another terrorist attack on our own soil?”

Mueller indicated he was more concerned about Hezbollah doing that than al-Qaeda.

“As to the Southwest border and al-Qaida, we have not seen an increase of effort by al-Qaida to come across the Southwest border,” said Mueller. “On the other hand, when you open the question up to other terrorist groups, I would say that we have a continuing concern about Iranian influence, actors and Hezbollah.”

In fact, Mueller had testified in the Senate Committee on Intelligence on Feb. 16, 2005, about a Hezbollah fundraiser from Lebanon who had been discovered in Michigan. “In 2004,” Mueller said in a statement to the committee, “we had some success in uncovering individuals providing material support to Hezbollah.

“In Detroit, Mahmoud Youssef Kourani was indicted in the Eastern District of Michigan on one count of Conspiracy to Provide Material Support to Hezbollah,” Mueller said. “Kourani was already in custody for entering the country illegally through Mexico and was involved in fundraising activities on behalf of Hezbollah.”

A staff report on “9/11 and Terrorist Travel” published in 2004 by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States provided information about a smuggler who smuggled “Lebanese nationals sympathetic to Hamas and Hezbollah into the United States.”

“In July 2001,” said the report, “the CIA warned of a possible link between human smugglers and terrorist groups, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Indeed, there is evidence to suggest that since 1999 human smugglers have facilitated the travel of terrorists associated with more than a dozen extremist groups.”

“One smuggler, Salim Boughader-Mucharrafille,” said the report, “smuggled Lebanese nationals sympathetic to Hamas and Hezbollah into the United States and relied on corrupt Mexican officials in Beirut, Mexico City and Tijuana to facilitate their travel. Specifically, Boughader obtained Mexican tourist visas from an official at the Mexican embassy in Beirut to facilitate the travel of humans to Mexico.”

“Boughader was charged with human smuggling and sentenced to 11 months in prison,” said the report. “After serving his sentence he was deported to Mexico where he was arrested along with several other members of his smuggling ring.”

“In May 2006,” the Congressional Research Service reported in 2007, “a Mexican judge reportedly sentenced Boughader-Mucharrafille to fourteen years in prison for his role in the smuggling ring and on organized crime charges.”

So, after discovering that “Lebanese nationals sympathetic to Hamas and Hezbollah” had been smuggled into the United States from Mexico, did the United States secure its southern border?

No.

Over each of the past four years, Customs and Border Protection has encountered an increasing number of individuals on the “Terrorist Screening Dataset” trying to sneak into the United States between the ports of entry on the Mexican border. This dataset, according to CBP, includes “known or suspected terrorists” and “additional individuals who represent a potential threat to the United States, including known affiliates of watchlisted individuals.”

In fiscal 2019, as this column has noted before, CBP did not encounter a single individual on this terrorist watchlist trying to sneak across the Mexican border. In 2020, it encountered 3. In 2021, it encountered 15. In 2022, it encountered 98.

In fiscal 2023, which ended in September, it encountered 169.

This February, the State Department issued its “Country Reports on Terrorism 2021.” What did it say about Hezbollah?

“Lebanon-based and Iran-backed terrorist group Hezbollah continued its long history of activity in the Western Hemisphere, including fundraising by its supporters and financiers in places like the tri-border area, where the borders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet,” said the State Department. “Hezbollah supporters generate funding through licit and illicit activity and donate undetermined amounts to Hezbollah in Lebanon, which uses the funds to advance its broader agenda. In recent years, Hezbollah supporters and members have been identified in Chile, Colombia, Panama, Peru and the United States.”

Jennie Taer of the Daily Caller News Foundation (where this writer is investigative editor) published a report this week that Customs and Border Protection had issued a memo on Oct. 20 warning that “(f)oreign fighters” from the Middle East might try to enter the United States from Mexico.

“San Diego Field Office Intelligence Unit (SDFO-FITU) assesses that individuals inspired by, or reacting to, the current Israel-Hamas conflict may attempt travel to or from the area of hostilities in the Middle East via circuitous transit across the Southwest border,” said the memo.

“Foreign fighters motivated by ideology or mercenary soldiers of fortune may attempt to obfuscate travel to or from the U.S. to or from countries in the Middle East through Mexico.”

So, how many Hezbollah — or Hamas — terrorists are in the United States today? Since our southern border is not secure and many people cross it illegally every day, our federal government has no way of knowing.

100 Syrians, 50 Iranians Cross Biden’s Open Border in October, Says Source

Special Interest Aliens surge in numbers crossing the border in October. (Randy Clark/Breitbart Texas)
Randy Clark/Breitbart Texas

EAGLE PASS, Texas — According to a source within CBP, the influx of Special Interest Migrants across the U.S./Mexico border continues early in the NEW fiscal year as nearly 100 Syrian and 50 Iranian nationals have been apprehended by the Border Patrol since the beginning of October. The source says the influx of Syrian and Iranian Special Interest Migrants is concerning, considering the turmoil unfolding in the Middle East.

The Syrian and Iranian migrants were apprehended in multiple sectors across the southwest border during October. The latest arrest of an Iranian national by the Border Patrol occurred near Eagle Pass, Texas, on Saturday. The Iranian national was discovered within a single group of more than 300 that crossed into the small border city. A debrief of the Iranian migrant is pending as of press time, according to the source.

The source says the continued encounter of Syrian and Iranian nationals is more concerning considering the recent U.S. air strikes against Iran-linked sites in Syria in response to drone and missile attacks on U.S. military bases in the region. According to the source, the arrivals of Special Interest Migrants at the southwest border are appearing with little to no advance intelligence warning.

“We are receiving no advance warning of the arrival of Special Interest Migrants from the region with any specificity,” the source explained. “We are left to sort through the grab-bag of migrants in small and large groups to figure out who is in the group and why they are coming.”

Eleven Special Interest Migrants from Middle Eastern countries were apprehended in just one sector of the border patrol in one week alone.

As reported by Breitbart Texas, during the week of October 8 to October 14, Border Patrol agents apprehended six Iranian nationals, three Lebanese nationals, one Egyptian national, and one Saudi Arabian national that made landfall in Texas on the banks of the Rio Grande in the Del Rio Border Patrol Sector that includes Eagle Pass.

The Syrian and Iranian Special Interest Migrants are mostly single adult males. Both countries are subject to travel warnings by the U.S. State Department. The State Department has issued a Level-4 advisory regarding travel to Syria due to terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, armed conflict, and the risk of unjust detention.

Iran is also subject to a Level-4 travel warning by the State Department due to the risk of kidnapping and the arbitrary arrest and detention of U.S. citizens.

The source says, absent any significant intelligence indicting a Special Interest migrant may pose a known threat to the United States, they are generally released into the U.S. to pursue asylum claims.

As reported by Breitbart Texas, more than 61,000 Special Interest Migrants were encountered by the Border Patrol in Fiscal Year 2023, which ended on September 30.  The number of migrants from Special Interest countries climbed by more than 140 percent from Fiscal Year 2022, when more than 25,500 were apprehended. In all, more than 86,000 Special Interest migrants have illegally entered the United States in the previous two fiscal years.

According to a 2019 DHS fact sheet, the term “Significant Interest Alien” is defined as follows:

Generally, an SIA is a non-U.S. person who, based on an analysis of travel patterns, potentially poses a national security risk to the United States or its interests.  Often, such individuals or groups employ travel patterns known or evaluated to possibly have a nexus to terrorism. DHS analysis includes an examination of travel patterns, points of origin, and/or travel segments that are tied to current assessments of national and international threat environments.

This does not mean that all SIAs are “terrorists,” but rather that the travel and behavior of such individuals indicate a possible nexus to nefarious activity (including terrorism) and, at a minimum, provide indicators that necessitate heightened screening and further investigation.  The term SIA does not indicate any specific derogatory information about the individual – and DHS has never indicated that the SIA designation means more than that.

President Joe Biden’s White House has no plans to revoke the visas of those foreign students engaging in demonstrations across United States college campuses in defense of the Islamic terrorist organization Hamas and its attacks on Israel.

After a number of Republicans urged Biden’s State Department to revoke the visas of pro-Hamas foreign students who hold F-1 visas, National Security Council (NSC) spokesman John Kirby said the administration will not do so.

An exchange at a White House briefing went as follows:

REPORTER: There’s been an uptick on the right among some Republicans who have called for students or foreign nationals who are demonstrating in some of these pro-Palestine demonstrations or, you know, allegedly pro-Hamas demonstrations to have their student visas pulled or to face deportation. What is the administration’s remark — response to those kinds of remarks and that kind of rhetoric? Is that an overreaction? [Emphasis added]

KIRBY: That … I would just tell you that you don’t have to agree with every sentiment that is expressed in a free country like this to stand by … the idea [of] the First Amendment and the idea of peaceful protest. I’ll leave it at that. [Emphasis added]

As Breitbart News reported, Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) are leading a resolution urging the Biden administration to revoke the visas of foreign nationals in the U.S. who are involved in pro-Hamas demonstrations — especially those on F-1 student visas.

“To put the security of American citizens first, President Biden must immediately revoke the visas of those who support Hamas and other terrorist groups,” Blackburn said.

Sens. Katie Britt (R-AL.), Rick Scott (R-FL), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), J.D. Vance (R-OH), Ted Budd (R-NC), Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), Ron Johnson (R-WI), John Cornyn (R-TX), and John Hoeven (R-ND) have signed the resolution.

Meanwhile, Rubio and Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) have each written to top Biden officials at the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) pressing them to swiftly revoke visas and deport pro-Hamas foreign students.

“I write to urge you to immediately deport any foreign national — including and especially any alien on a student visa — that has expressed support for Hamas and its murderous attacks on Israel,” Cotton wrote to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

“These fifth-columnists have no place in the United States,” Cotton wrote.

In Fiscal Year 2022, alone, the federal government provided green cards and nonimmigrant visas, including F-1 student visas, to foreign nationals from some of the most pro-Hamas countries in the world.

For example, more than 8,300 Iranians arrived in the U.S. last year on nonimmigrant visas. In addition, the government gave more than 8,000 green cards to Iranians in Fiscal Year 2022 — including more than 800 who arrived on the Diversity Visa Lottery and more than 520 who arrived as refugees.

Hamas chief offers up the blood of Gaza's women and children to keep his terrorists motivated

So is this a man, or a maggot?

He "needs..."

What a needy [expletive deleted].

Normal nations ... and men ... will fight and sacrifice themselves for their women and children. That's the textbook definition of masculinity. That's what Israel is doing as it seeks to defend itself against the monstrous terrorists who laid waste to the land and tortured and murdered 1,400 innocent women, children, elders and many others.

Now this creep wants to sacrifice his fiefdom's women and children, presumably because he can't motivate his minions to fight for his repellent cause otherwise.

On one level, that's understandable, actually, because there's nothing good about it. What's more maggoty than going out and slaughtering innocent women, children, babies, handicapped people, and old people, which is what Hamas pulled on October 7? Anyone can kill the vulnerable. It takes a man to take up arms against actual warriors, which none of them are, nor do they have the courage to do.

So they're not exactly manly to start with, (which may explains the strange attraction for their rotten cause by a tiny subgroup of far-left Western protestors with names like Gays for Palestine have for them. Some in their culture wouldn't have much interest in the fate of 'breeders' either.)

Now this [expletive deleted] wants to sacrifice his own women and children to keep the boys motivated to keep on commiting terrorist acts.

He's not some anomaly within Hamas, either. There's also him:

It should be noted that the Hamas chief and his creepy minion talking about what Hamas tunnels are for are offering up these women and children for bloodshed from the pit of their luxury digs somewhere in Qatar and New York. Caviar for me, bombs for thee.

Only an insane person would want to fight for this group.

Men fight wars for the sake of their women, they don't put them out there to be killed to stay motivated. What would a theoretical Hamas fighter be fighting for if not his women and children? Who would he have to go back home to once he presumably wins? No one. Which tells us a lot about what the aim here is -- some kind of revolutionary fervor, and yes, I recall that Vo Nguyen Giap used to talk like this, too, in his memoirs of the war in Vietnam. The communist fanatic was always ready to sacrifice large groups of his countrymen for the sake of his terrible cause.

What this shows is that Israel is battled a depraved, diseased, demented force, one that can't even get up in the morning without their wives' and kids' blood on the kitchen floor.

What's scary is that they believe this garbage ideology and will gladly put women and children in the line of fire to keep their terrorism operation with all its slimy rat-house tunnels running forever.

Why the Gaza women put up with this creep volunteering their blood to keep the fellas motivated is a mystery -- it's as if they have a collective case of beaten-woman syndrome.

Israel is going to have a heck of a lot to deal with here as Joe Biden and all his leftist supporters cheer Hamas and attempt to halt any hosing out of Hamas and its terrorist operations.

This is no normal enemy Israel is confronting. This is a twisted, sick movement that would gladly volunteer others for death and destruction, while happily ensconcing themselves in safety and luxury, content to amass power and money.

It would be a fine thing to see just one of these women and children offered up for his blood sacrifices to get up the gumption to blow this monster away. Let it be his blood that gets sacrificed since that's what he wants and let's see how many people that motivates.

If he wants blood, let it be his.

GRAPHIC: Cartel Gunmen Kill 13 Mexican Cops in Violent Coastal State Attack

Guerrero
Breitbart Texas / Cartel Chronicles

A group of Mexican cartel gunmen killed 13 police officers and injured two others in a series of attacks in the popular coastal state of Guerrero. The crime scene is not far from the tourist hotspots of Acapulco and Zihuatanejo.

A statement from the Guerrero Attorney General’s Office revealed that the mass killings took place on Monday in the municipality of Coyuca. The victims included the city’s Public Security Secretary Alfredo Alonso Benitez and 12 of his officers and top aides.

The attack occurred shortly after noon when the group of police officers was patrolling the region near the town of El Papayo when the officers became the target of an ambush. The gunmen killed some of the officers and took several others captive, only to execute them shortly after.

By the time additional police forces arrived at the scene, the gunmen had already left, leaving behind the bodies of their victims.

The violence in Guerrero comes at a time when several criminal organizations continue to fight for control of the region’s lucrative drug trafficking routes into Mexico and drug production areas in the rural communities.

As Breitbart Texas reported, historically, factions tied to the Familia Michoacana have had influence in Guerrero. They have been fighting with several groups tied to other cartels such as Cartel Jalisco New Generation, Sinaloa Cartel, and other organizations.

The mass killing of police officers comes as Guerrero’s Governor Evelyn Salgado, from the MORENA party, continuously claims that the region has seen a decrease in crime and that the state is safe. In her most recent social media posts, Salgado has not commented about the mass killing of her police officers. She has, however, boasted about how her state is prepared for a tropical storm.

7K Migrant Apprehensions at U.S./Canada Border Sector Exceed Prior 11 Years

Migrants Illegally Crossing Canadian Border into the Swanton Sector
U.S. Border Patrol/Swanton Sector

Official numbers released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection show that Swanton Sector Border Patrol agents apprehended nearly 7,000 migrants during the just-ended fiscal year. The apprehension total exceeds the prior 11 years combined.

On September 25, Swanton Sector Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia posted on X a report showing his agents apprehended just over 6,700 migrants in Fiscal Year 23. By the end of the year on September 30, that number climbed to 6,925 migrant apprehensions.

Garcia stated the apprehension this year exceeded the total apprehensions for the previous 11 years combined.

The Swanton Sector spans the Canadian border in northeastern New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire.

During Fiscal Year 22, the number of apprehensions was only 1,065. Compare this to the 956 migrants apprehended just in the month of September. In Fiscal Year 21, that number was only reported to be 365.

The overwhelming majority of the migrants apprehended this year in the Swanton Sector were single adults (5,161), according to the CBP Nationwide Encounters Report released last Saturday afternoon. Family units accounted for 1,742 of the near 7,000 apprehensions. Only 22 unaccompanied minors were found in the sector during FY23.

Of the 6,952 migrants apprehended, 3,747 came to Canada from Mexico and the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras (54 percent). This is up from only 718 in FY22 and 149 in FY21, the report indicates.

Chief Garcia warned that dangerous winter temperatures are rapidly approaching. He said overnight temperatures are already falling into the 30s. During last year’s winter season, many migrants died while attempting to cross from Canada into the Swanton Sector.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials announced that Border Patrol agents apprehended more than two million migrants for the second consecutive year. The report, snuck out in a Saturday afternoon media dump, confirms an October 1 article by Breitbart Texas that revealed the apprehension of more than 218,000 migrants in September.

Since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021, Border Patrol agents apprehended more than 5.7 million migrants who illegally crossed the southwest border between ports of entry, the reports indicate.

“In response to high rates of encounters across the southwest border in September, CBP surged resources and personnel. We are continually engaging with domestic and foreign partners to address historic hemispheric migration, including large migrant groups traveling on freight trains, and to enforce consequences including by preparing for direct repatriations to Venezuela,” Troy A. Miller, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner said in a written statement on Saturday. “CBP will continue to remain vigilant, making operational adjustments as necessary and enforcing consequences under U.S. immigration law.

The 2,045,838 apprehensions include nearly 1.3 million single adults, 621,000 family units, and 131,500 unaccompanied minors, the report indicates.

In contrast, during President Donald Trump’s last full fiscal year in office, agents apprehended only 400,651. During the last two months alone, agents apprehended 399,000 migrants.

In September, agents apprehended 218,763 migrants. This represents an increase of five percent over the 207,597 migrants apprehended one year earlier.

The two million migrant apprehensions do not include migrants who entered the country through the CBP One app and other immigration blanket parole programs not authorized by Congress. Official U.S. Customs and Border Protection reports that include these numbers are not expected to be released until the end of October.

The “blood” of Gaza’s women, children, and elderly is needed to “awaken” Palestinian resolve, according to the Hamas terror organization’s senior leader who continues making calls for Palestinian sacrifice from the comfort of his luxury home in distant Qatar.

Hamas terror chief Ismail Haniyeh issued his latest appeal in an address aired Thursday on various TV networks, including Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen news channel.

In addressing future repercussions of a major geopolitical shift, Haniyeh urged for intellectual discourse and strategic planning.

“I call upon all the intellectuals and strategic experts to discuss the post-occupation phase, because [Israel’s] demise is inevitable,” he said. “This occupier will not be able to recover, because of the strategic blow and resounding defeat that befell it.”

Amidst Israel’s ground offensive in response to Hamas’ bloody October 7 massacre, the senior terrorist leader urged the global community to “exert all the necessary pressure, in all directions and in all forums, in order to end the aggression against Gaza, to stop this war against our children, women, and elderly, our mosques, our universities, and our homes.”

However, he insisted on the need for the “blood of the women, children, and elderly” of Gaza’s Palestinians in order to “awaken within us the revolutionary spirit, so it awakens within us resolve, so it awakens within us the spirit of challenge, and [pushes us] to move forward.”

His comments come in the wake of the worst terrorist attack in Israel’s history, which saw some 2,500 terrorists burst into Israel by land, sea, and air and gun down participants at an outdoor music festival while others went door-to-door hunting, torturing, shooting, and kidnapping Jewish men, women, and children in local towns.

The massacre resulted in more than 1,400 dead inside the Jewish state, over 5,300 more wounded, and at least 239 hostages of all ages taken.

The vast majority of the victims are civilians and include dozens of American citizens.

As the brutal events unfolded, Haniyeh along with other Hamas leaders were filmed watching coverage of the invasion with smiles as they performed a “prostration of gratitude” over the successful killing and torture of hundreds of innocents.

“Let us prostrate. These images were … See the guys with a new jeep. Look. Look. The Israeli jeep … Let’s do it. This is a prostration of gratitude for this victory,” Haniyeh says. “Allah, please bestow your support and glory on our people and nation. Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah be praised.”

Haniyeh, whose wealth has burgeoned since Hamas’ 2006 electoral victory, fueled by the group’s control over Gaza’s economy and taxation of goods, has long drawn criticism for his luxurious lifestyle in Qatar, which stands in sharp contrast with the poverty in Gaza.

Chairman of Hamas’ political bureau who once served as prime minister of the Palestinian Authority, Haniyeh is now facing accusations of sacrificing his own people, all from the comfort of a luxury hotel in the far-off affluent Gulf country.

“Because nothing says ‘free Palestine’ like calling on Palestinian children to sacrifice themselves for Jihad while you hang out in your luxury Qatar apartment,” wrote journalist Emily Schrader.

“Hamas is the only ‘army’ in history that has planned its operations deliberately to have its own civilians killed by its enemy. Its whole strategy is based on that,” wrote former commander of British forces in Afghanistan Colonel Richard Kemp.

“How is the civilized world to take this war against Hamas seriously while this Stone Age cultist remains alive, spewing hate in the lap of luxury in Qatar?” asked former Trump campaign aide Michael Caputo. “We know exactly where he is. We know everywhere he goes. We know every blood-soaked hair on the heads of his entire clan.”

On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) revealed intelligence showing that Hamas uses hospitals to hide its facilities and to hoard fuel that it denies to the civilians of the Gaza Strip.

Last year, Haniyeh said it was incumbent on the Palestinians to start looking to form strategic alliances with Russia, Iran, and China because the U.S. is likely to lose its global hegemony once the Russia-Ukraine war is over.

Earlier this month, Breitbart News reported on a senior Hamas official admitting the ultimate aim of the Palestinian war with Israel is to conquer the planet, so the world could finally be rid of “Zionism” and “treacherous Christianity.”

100 Syrians, 50 Iranians Cross Biden’s Open Border in October, Says Source

Media Worst: Hamas Invades America

(Chris McGrath/Getty Images)
October 29, 2023

Happy Sunday. Let's check in on the media this past week.

What happened to safe spaces?: Jewish students at Cooper Union college in New York City hid in a library as pro-Palestinian protesters chanted, "Globalize the intifada," banged on the windows, and tried to force open the locked doors.

https://twitter.com/yashar/status/1717297845592821933

But according to leading news outlets, the incident was no big deal—just some campus "tensions."

New York Times, Oct. 26: "Israel-Hamas War Protest Leads to Tense Scene at Cooper Union Library":

The tensions inflamed by the Israel-Hamas war that have roiled university campuses in the United States spilled into the Cooper Union in New York on Wednesday, with pro-Palestinian protesters pounding on one side of locked library doors and Jewish students on the other.

The episode, captured in a six-second video snippet that was widely shared on social media, was among the latest examples of how sharply the Middle East conflict has divided student bodies at a number of top liberal arts colleges. ...

Chief Chell said at no point did the police or private security at the campus perceive any danger from any of the protesters.

CBS News, Oct. 26: "Pro-Palestinian Rally at Cooper Union Leads to Tense Moments at School Library":

A representative for Cooper Union says the library was closed for approximately 20 minutes in the late afternoon and that students chose to stay in the library until the protest was over. ...

Off camera, several pro-Palestinian students told CBS New York they planned to protest throughout the entire school and did not target or threaten the Jewish students in the library. ...

A spokesperson says about 20 students demonstrated outside the president's office, who said she did not feel in danger, before they made their way towards the library.

Daily Beast, Oct. 26: "Cooper Union Pro-Israel Students Locked in Library During Tense Protest":

Representatives from the pro-Palestine protest said in a statement that the protest was against Cooper Union itself over the school’s "one-sided stance and participation in the occupation of Palestine" and that they do not condone anti-Semitism. At a news conference on Thursday morning, John Chell, chief of patrol for the New York Police Department, stated police officers had attended the protest in plainclothes, as requested by the college. "There was no direct threat. There was no damage, and there was no danger to any students in that school." he said.

Contrast that with years of breathless reporting about "BIPOC" and LGBT students being "unsafe" on campus.

Truth to power: The New York Times forced out its COVID-19 reporter in 2021 for repeating a racial slur in order to condemn racist language. But the paper defended its employment of a Hitler-praising journalist to document the Israel-Hamas war.

Solimon Hijjy is hardly the only open anti-Semite still working at the heights of American journalism.

Biden’s border crisis: Customs and Border Protection warned in a leaked internal intelligence memo that Hamas or Hezbollah terrorists could potentially enter the United States via the southern border. But rather than report the news, outlets downplayed it.

Vice, Oct. 25: "No, Hamas and Hezbollah Are Not Sending Fighters Across the Southern Border":

For weeks, right-wing influencers, lawmakers, and political candidates have been using the Israel-Hamas conflict to fear-monger about immigration in the U.S., invoking well-worn conspiracy theories about asylum seekers acting as Trojan horses for terrorists.

The "memo" has acted as jet fuel on those conspiracies in recent days.

Voice of America, Oct. 25: "US Denies Hamas Eyeing US Southern Border":

CBP officials maintain that "encounters of known and suspected terrorists at our borders are very uncommon."

ABC News, Oct. 23: "Hamas Militants 'May Potentially' Try Crossing Southern Border, US Officials Warn":

A CBP spokesperson said in a statement that the agency has no indication Hamas has directed foreign militants to make entry into the U.S. ...

CBP intelligence offices regularly generate reports on potential threats to border security. Naming particular groups may indicate that officials have specific intelligence based on the severity of potential threats outside the U.S.

In other news not worth reporting: A record number of people on the FBI's terror watch list were caught at the border in the last fiscal year, and more than 1,000 illegal immigrants per day were seen entering the country this month without being apprehended.

Somehow, journalists seem to always be the last ones to know when there's a crisis at the border.

Media bubble: The media's regurgitation of false Hamas propaganda accusing Israel of bombing a Gaza hospital was so egregious that—after the Washington Free Beacon named and shamed the worst offenders—even the media had to cover the failure.

CNN, Oct. 26: "The New York Times Walks Back Flawed Gaza Hospital Coverage, But Other Media Outlets Remain Silent":

But if there was even a morsel of contrition from news organizations that breathed considerable life into Hamas’ very different version of events, it hasn’t been shown. A spokesperson for The WSJ declined comment. Meanwhile, spokespeople for the AP and Al Jazeera ignored my inquiries.

Reuters, which initially reported that Israel had struck the hospital, citing a "civil defense official," stood by how it covered the unfolding story, conceding no blunders in the process. ...

CNN went even further. Not only did the outlet amplify Hamas’ claims on its platforms at the outset of the story, but its initial rolling online article definitively stated—with no attribution to any party—that Israel was responsible for the lethal explosion. The story was later edited, but the error was never acknowledged in a correction or editors’ note. While it is common for news outlets to update online stories as new information becomes available, when errors are made, standard practice is to acknowledge them in formal corrections. A CNN spokesperson declined to comment specifically on the online story when reached Monday.

Reliable sources: The same outlets that walked back their initial coverage of the hospital blast continued to cite Hamas's statistics on Palestinian deaths, which the terrorist group has long misrepresented.

Some went so far as to explicitly defend the reliability of the Hamas-run Gazan health ministry.

Associated Press, Oct. 26: "What Is Gaza’s Ministry of Health and How Does It Calculate the War’s Death Toll?":

Gaza’s most widely quoted source on casualties is Health Ministry spokesperson Ashraf al-Qidra. From an office at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, al-Qidra receives a constant flow of data from every hospital in the strip.

Hospital administrators say they keep records of every wounded person occupying a bed and every dead body arriving at a morgue. They enter this data into a computerized system shared with al-Qidra and colleagues. According to screenshots hospital directors sent to AP, the system looks like a color-coded spreadsheet divided into categories: name, ID number, date of hospital entry, type of injury, condition.

Names aren’t always available, al-Qidra said. He and colleagues face disruptions because of spotty connectivity but say they call to double-check the numbers.

TIME, Oct. 26: "Biden Cast Doubt on Gaza’s Death Toll. Palestinian Officials Responded With 6,747 Names":

Although Gaza has been under Hamas’ rule since 2007, this is the first time that the reliability of the enclave’s health ministry has been so prominently called into question. News outlets and international organizations and agencies have long relied on Israeli and Palestinian government sources for casualty figures. While they do so partly because they are unable to independently verify these figures themselves, it’s also because these statistics have proven accurate in the past. ...

While keeping track of the numbers of dead and wounded may seem like a particularly arduous task amid the latest bombardment, which has seen thousands of buildings destroyed and more than 1 million of Gaza's 2.2 million people displaced, there is a process by which Palestinians track their casualties.

Washington Post, Oct. 26: "Why News Outlets and the UN Rely on Gaza’s Health Ministry for Death Tolls":

Many experts consider figures provided by the ministry reliable, given its access, sources, and accuracy in past statements.

"Everyone uses the figures from the Gaza Health Ministry because those are generally proven to be reliable," said Omar Shakir, Israel and Palestine director at Human Rights Watch. "In the times in which we have done our own verification of numbers for particular strikes, I’m not aware of any time which there’s been some major discrepancy." ...

Hamas received support in the 2006 elections in part by promising better social services, and some analysts say the group has improved certain areas of access.

Stay safe out there, and see you next week.
