Homeownership
The dream of home ownership is slipping away for many Americans with high mortgage rates, rising prices, and stagnant income. To make matters worse, venture capital firms and hedge funds are buying up single-family homes by the millions. As home ownership costs rise beyond reach, rents follow them into the stratosphere.
Consider these statistics:
- American homeownership is declining at the highest rate since the great depression.
- We lost more than 1 million homeowners in 2021 — more than in the housing crash of 2008 — and then another million in 2022.
- The median home price has risen from $250,000 in 2019 to $400,000 in 2023.
- Mortgage interest rates have more than doubled since President Biden took office.
- This rise in interest rates combined with skyrocketing housing prices has pushed the average monthly payment for someone buying a home from $1,050 in 2019 to over $2,600 per month.
- At the same time, take-home pay after inflation and taxes has fallen by 9%.
- At the current pace, by 2030 60% of single-family homes will be owned by corporations.
What this means is that home ownership is now out of reach for all but the top income bracket. Younger Americans in particular barely dream of ever owning a home. They face a future at the mercy of faceless corporate landlords who will raise rent to the highest level the market will bear.
None of this is inevitable, though. As President, RFK Jr. will enact a series of policies to put home ownership back within the reach of working families. Here’s how:
- Tax-free 3% government-backed mortgage bonds, to bring the mortgage interest rate back to 2019 levels and even lower. It’s like having a rich uncle — Uncle Sam — who is willing to cosign your mortgage. Because the financing will come from investors, the cost to taxpayers will be minimal. This measure alone will reduce monthly costs for the average home purchase by $1,000.
- Bring derelict land and buildings back online. Many cities have thousands of vacant lots and buildings that have been seized for tax arrears or other reasons. The Kennedy administration will incentivize local governments to bring city-owned land and buildings back onto the market.
- Zoning changes. We will encourage municipalities to change zoning laws to allow ancillary dwelling units (granny flats) on more properties, to make housing available, bring families together, and provide homeowners with rental income. More supply means lower prices.
- Tax code changes. Small changes to the tax code can make corporate investments in single-family homes uneconomic. For example, we can change business depreciation rules and reform the “enterprise zones” that have contributed so much to gentrification.
Together, these changes will restore home ownership to tens of millions of Americans, and lower costs for tens of millions more. We will get large corporations out of the single-family home business.

New Migrant Caravan Leaves Southern Mexico Headed North
A new migrant caravan began walking through southern Mexico to make their way north toward the U.S. border, where some have expressed the expectation of crossing illegally and then requesting asylum or protection. Prior caravans disbanded once they reached Mexico City or along the way when government officials gave them certain travel documents and allowed them to get on buses or airplanes.
The new caravan, which is still in its early stages, is made up of approximately 1,800 migrants. The group began moving through the southern state of Chiapas, near the Mexican-Guatemalan border. The group is expected to journey northwest through Chiapas toward the state of Oaxaca. The group began organizing earlier this week and posted signs around the city parks and migrant shelters in Tapachula, Chiapas, announcing a start date of January 25. However, more migrants are expected to join the group in the coming days.
As in prior caravans, migrants have been carrying white wooden crosses and banners with messages claiming that immigration is not illegal and condemning governments that are not open to migrants.
Local government officials set up shelters and rest stops along the way to provide the migrants with food and water, while Mexican authorities have been escorting the migrants to keep them safe.
The new caravan comes at a time when U.S. border cities have been seeing record-setting numbers of migrants arriving and requesting asylum. The record-setting numbers have led to much controversy between the Biden administration and the Texas government.

Biden Admin Rolls Out Record-Shattering Border Report in Friday Afternoon News Dump
The Biden administration rolled out a record-shattering border encounters report in a Friday afternoon news dump. The monthly Southwest Land Border Encounters report came out later than normal and revealed a shocking look at the apprehension of nearly 250,000 migrants in the month of December.
The report, released on Friday afternoon, shows that Border Patrol agents along the southwest border with Mexico apprehended 249,785 migrants who illegally crossed the border in December between ports of entry. This is up by 12 percent from the 222,018 migrants apprehended one year ago and more than 11 percent compared to the Biden-era record of 224,370 set in May 2022.
The December report brings the southwest border total for the first quarter of FY24 to nearly 630,000 migrant encounters. More than half of these encounters (325739) were classified as single adults. The remainder were family units (268,818) and unaccompanied minors (35,118).
“CBP has taken significant steps to surge personnel and resources to impacted areas and address challenges we are experiencing across the southwest border,” CBP officials said in a written statement late Friday afternoon. “Encounter numbers continue to fluctuate, as smugglers and bad actors continue to spread falsehoods and show complete disregard for the safety and well-being of vulnerable migrants.”
The Tucson and Del Rio Sectors accounted for more than 150,000 of the nearly 250,000 migrant apprehensions in December. The apprehension of 80,185 migrants in the Tucson Sector in December is up by more than 260 percent from the prior year’s December report of 22,131 migrant apprehensions.
The Del Rio Sector reported 71,095 migrant apprehensions in December. This is up by nearly 38 percent from one year ago when agents encountered 51,701 migrants.
The San Diego Sector was the third busiest in December, with 34,372 migrant encounters (up 81.4 percent). This was followed by the El Paso Sector’s 33,970 encounters (down 39.1 percent).
The Tucson and Del Rio Sectors accounted for more than 352,000 of the nearly 630,000 southwest land border encounters in FY24, which began on September 1, 2023.
More than half of the reported encounters were migrants from countries other than Mexico and the Northern Triangle countries of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. Venezuelan migrants accounted for nearly 100,000. This compared to just over 200,000 Venezuelan migrants apprehended in the entire Fiscal Year 23.
The number of Chinese migrants encountered at the southwest border also continues to rise. In December, agents encountered nearly 6,000 migrants. This is up from 931 the year before and five in January 2021, the month President Joe Biden took office. During the first quarter of FY24, agents encountered nearly 15,000 Chinese migrants. This compares to just over 24,000 total apprehensions in FY23.
Unofficial Border Patrol reports reviewed by Breitbart Texas show a sharp decline in migrant apprehensions in the first three weeks of January. Agents along the southwest border encountered only 83,000 migrants, approximately 3,777 per day. This compares to approximately 8,057 per day in December.
Seasonal trends and efforts by Mexican authorities to intercept migrants in their northern border states and return them to central or southern Mexico account for most of the decline.
“Consistent with historical trends and enhanced enforcement, the first two weeks of January saw an over 50% decrease in southwest border encounters between ports of entry according to preliminary figures,” CBP officials stated.
