Facts Dispel Myth that Obama Has Increased Deportations
The simple answer is that it isn’t true. Deportations are decreasing and the administration has been fudging the numbers.
Last year, FAIR looked at who was being deported and discovered that while more illegal aliens with criminal histories were being removed, the share of non-criminal illegal aliens being removed had decreased.
Now, thanks to the investigative work of Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) we learn that the total number of deportations – including both criminal and non-criminal – is falling as well. The reason is that DHS has revised their definition of what constitutes a “removal” and developed a new trick for keeping track.
Smith explains, “Since 2011, the Obama administration has included numbers from a Border Patrol program that returns illegal immigrants to Mexico right after they cross the Southwest border in their year-end deportation statistics. It is dishonest to count illegal immigrants apprehended by the Border Patrol along the border as ICE removals. And these ‘removals’ from the Border Patrol program do not subject the illegal immigrant to any penalties or bars for returning to the U.S. This means a single illegal immigrant can show up at the border and be removed numerous times in a single year – and counted each time as a removal.”
The accounting is deceptive, yet obviously self-serving. After all, any little leaguer could trump Hank Aaron’s RBI record in baseball provided they simply took it upon themselves to redefine what constitutes a major league RBI.
Properly accounted for by using an apples-to-apples comparison, the Obama deportation numbers reflect quite a different story (see graph).
Deportations began rising under President Bush in 2007 (only after he finally began taking enforcement seriously and was rebuffed for trying to enact amnesty) and continued into Obama’s first year in office. But Obama cannot claim credit even for that. The brief increase was the result of hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens put in proceedings under Bush. This “pipeline” of cases carried over into the Obama administration. After the initial rise, deportations have fallen.

The President has been able to hide his non-enforcement policies behind a thinly veiled claim of increased deportations which has helped him play both sides of the fence. For special interests demanding amnesty, he’s dismantled most interior enforcement and put into place guidelines to grant millions of illegal aliens deferred action. For those wanting some semblance of enforcement – a rule of law – he’s fabricated a thinly veiled claim of increased deportations.
Since that ruse is now over, we wonder what will be the new “yes, but” arguments made by this administration and amnesty groups desperate to have something with which to sugarcoat their bitter pill of amnesty while they continue gutting the orderly administration of immigration laws.

This election will decide what America will be

Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Tuesday in Tampa, “I don’t want my children and
grandchildren to have to read in a history book what it was like to live in an
American century.” This is an accurate summary of the stakes of the 2012
election. Voters in November won’t simply determine who will lead the country
for the next four years. It’s a choice between two fundamentally different
future countries.
The
vision presented by speakers at the Republican National Convention in Tampa was
traditionally American, of an opportunity society in which hard work and
success are rewarded, not punished. It’s a country in which economic growth is
based on the efforts of millions of individuals unhampered by countless, minute
and maddening government controls. The slogan “We built this” is more than just
a dig at Barack Obama’s infamous gaffe; it’s a true reflection of the spirit
that transformed the United States from a sleepy wilderness to the greatest
economic power in human history.
This is
in contrast to the revolutionary agenda being implemented by the Obama
administration of an economy controlled and directed by Washington. It’s a
country in which bureaucrats in every federal department seek new ways to
deepen and expand their influence on the everyday lives of citizens. It’s an
entitlement society in which there is no shame in going on the public dole. To
the White House, having record numbers of people on food stamps isn’t an
alarming indicant of an economy that’s severely off track but a point of pride
for a president who touts it as proof that he cares.
This
election is about the nature of citizenship. Republicans seek to reform the
immigration system to allow people to earn the right to become Americans by
demonstrating loyalty to the nation and willingness to contribute to the common
good. President Obama has made it easier for
illegal aliens to enter the country, hampered state efforts to block them,
extended unprecedented access to public assistance and encouraged border
jumpers by calling them Americans “in their heart, in their minds, in every
single way but one: on paper.”
National identity and the nature of the individual are on the line. Conservatives want to unite Americans behind a common vision of equal opportunity, but the liberal power base sustains itself through promoting social divisions based on race, class, sex, sexual preference and religion. Where Republicans see cooperative communities, Democrats promote tribal conflicts.
The
stakes couldn’t be higher in the 2012 presidential campaign. No election in
modern times has presented so stark a choice. This will be the year that will
determine whether people can speak of American greatness in the future tense or
only as a faded moment from the past.

New FAIR Report Details How Obama has
Systematically Dismantled Immigration Enforcement

Hardly a week goes by, it seems,
without some sort of new announcement of a policy shift on immigration
emanating from the White House or a cabinet department. Without exception,
these announcements entail the unilateral relaxation of some immigration law or
the lifting of some penalty for those who violate the law.
What has transpired over the past
three-and-a-half years is not a series of insignificant tweaks, as the
President and his minions have claimed, but a well thought-out strategy on the
part of the Obama administration to implement radical changes to our
immigration policy, while making an end-run around Congress. A new report by
FAIR, President Obama’s Record of Dismantling Immigration Enforcement, details
each step taken by the administration as it has curtailed most enforcement of
our immigration laws, bestowed de facto amnesty on millions of illegal aliens,
while wreaking vengeance on anyone who tried to get in their way.
The report, issued Tuesday, grabbed
national attention as the lead story on the FoxNews.com website, accompanied by
a FAIR op-ed. There are also some other hopeful signs that Congress is finally
taking notice of the administration’s strategy to cut them out of the
immigration policy decision-making loop. On Thursday, Senators Jeff Sessions
(R-Ala.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and David Vitter (R-La.) will be joined by
immigration law enforcement officials at a Capitol news conference to “reveal
the administration’s sustained dismantling of border protection and enforcement.”
Perhaps, finally, Congress and the
American public will begin to take notice of the Obama administration’s

With
the support of 70 percent of its citizens, Arizona has ordered sheriffs and
police to secure the border and remove illegal aliens, half a million of whom
now reside there.
Arizona
acted because the U.S. government has abdicated its constitutional duty to
protect the states from invasion and refuses to enforce America's immigration
laws.
"We
in Arizona have been more than patient waiting for Washington to act,"
said Gov. Jan Brewer. "But decades of inaction and misguided policy have created
an unacceptable situation."
We
have a crisis in Arizona because we have a failed state in Washington.
What is the response of
Barack Obama, who took an oath to see to it that federal laws are faithfully

He is siding with the

Mexican regime that aids and abets this invasion of the country of which he is

He
has denounced Arizona as "misguided." He has called on the Justice
Department to ensure that Arizona's sheriffs and police do not violate anyone's
civil rights. But he has said nothing about the rights of the people of Arizona
who must deal with the costs of having hundreds of thousands of lawbreakers in
their midst.
How's
that for Andrew Jackson-style leadership?
Obama
has done everything but his duty to enforce the law.
Undeniably,
making it a state as well as a federal crime to be in this country illegally,
and requiring police to check the immigration status of anyone they have a
"reasonable suspicion" is here illegally, is tough and burdensome.
But what choice did Arizona have?
The
state has a fiscal crisis caused in part by the burden of providing schooling
and social welfare for illegals and their families, who consume far more in
services than they pay in taxes and who continue to pour in. Even John McCain
is now calling for 3,000 troops on the border.
Police
officers and a prominent rancher have been murdered. There have been
kidnappings believed to be tied to the Mexican drug cartels. There are nightly
high-speed chases through the barrios where innocent people are constantly at
risk.
If
Arizona does not get control of the border and stop the invasion, U.S. citizens
will stop coming to Arizona and will begin to depart, as they are already
fleeing California.
A country that cannot control
its borders isn't really a country anymore, Ronald Reagan reminded us.
What
we are talking about here is the Balkanization and breakup of a nation into
ethnic enclaves. A country that cannot

The
tasks that Arizonans are themselves undertaking are ones that belong by right,
the Constitution and federal law to the Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs
Enforcement, and Homeland Security.
Arizona
has been compelled to assume the feds' role because the feds won't do their
job. And for that dereliction of duty the buck stops on the desk of the
president of the United States.
Why
is Obama paralyzed? Why does he not enforce the law, even if he dislikes it, by
punishing the businessmen who hire illegals and by sending the 12 million to 20
million illegals back home? President Eisenhower did it. Why won't he?

us see how many African-Americans, who are today frozen out of the 8 million
jobs held by illegal aliens that might otherwise go to them or their children,
will march to defend an invasion for which they are themselves paying the
heaviest price.
Last
year, while Americans were losing a net of 5 million jobs, the U.S. government
-- Bush and Obama both -- issued 1,131,000 green cards to legal immigrants to
come and take the jobs that did open up, a flood of immigrants equaled in only
four other years in our history.

The
setting was not quite the flight deck of the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln with a
“Mission Accomplished” banner as the backdrop, but it was the next best thing.
Speaking at the Center for American Progress (CAP) on Nov. 13, Homeland Security
Secretary Janet Napolitano declared victory over illegal immigration and
announced that the Obama administration is ready to move forward with a mass
amnesty for the millions of illegal aliens already living in the United States.
Arguing
the Obama administration’s case for amnesty, Napolitano laid out what she
described as the “three-legged stool” for immigration reform. As the
administration views it, immigration reform must include “a commitment to
serious and effective enforcement, improved legal flows for families and
workers, and a firm but fair way to deal with those who are already here.”
Acknowledging
that a lack of confidence in the government’s ability and commitment to
effectively enforce the immigration laws it passes proved to be the Waterloo of
previous efforts to gain amnesty for illegal aliens, Napolitano was quick to
reassure the American public that those concerns could be put to rest.
“For
starters, the security of the Southwest border has been transformed from where
it was in 2007,” stated the secretary. Not only is the border locked up tight,
she continued, but the situation is well in-hand in the interior of the country
as well. “We’ve also shown that the government is serious and strategic in its
approach to enforcement by making changes in how we enforce the law in the
interior of the country and at worksites…Furthermore, we’ve transformed
worksite enforcement to truly address the demand side of illegal immigration.”
If
Rep. Joe Wilson had been in attendance to hear Secretary Napolitano’s CAP
speech he might well have had a few choice comments to offer. But since he
wasn’t, we will have to rely on the Department of Homeland Security’s own data
to assess the veracity of Napolitano’s claims.
According
to DHS’s own reports, very little of our nation’s borders (Southwestern or
otherwise) are secure, and gaining control is not even a goal of the
department. DHS claims to have “effective control” over just 894 miles of
border. That’s 894 out of 8,607 miles they are charged with protecting. As for
the other 7,713 miles? DHS’s stated border security goal for FY 2010 is the
same 894 miles.
The
administration’s strategic approach to interior and worksite enforcement is
just as chimerical as its strategy at the border, unless one considers shuffling
paper to be a strategy. DHS data, released November 18, show that
administrative arrests of immigration law violators fell by 68 percent between
2008 and 2009. The department also carried out 60 percent fewer arrests for
criminal violations of immigration laws, 58 percent fewer criminal indictments,
and won 63 percent fewer convictions.
While
the official unemployment rate has climbed from 7.6 percent when President
Obama took office in January to 10 percent today, the administration’s worksite
enforcement strategy has amounted to a bureaucratic game of musical chairs. The
administration has all but ended worksite enforcement actions and replaced them
with paperwork audits. When the audits determine that illegal aliens are on the
payroll, employers are given the opportunity to fire them with little or no
adverse consequence to the company, while no action is taken to remove the
illegal workers from the country. The illegal workers simply acquire a new set
of fraudulent documents and move on to the next employer seeking workers
willing to accept substandard wages.
In
Janet Napolitano’s alternative reality a mere 10 percent of our borders under
“effective control” and sharp declines in arrests and prosecutions of
immigration lawbreakers may be construed as confidence builders, but it is hard
to imagine that the American public is going to see it that way. If anything,
the administration’s record has left the public less confident that promises of
future immigration enforcement would be worth the government paper they’re
printed on.
As
Americans scrutinize the administration’s plans to overhaul immigration policy,
they are likely to find little in the “three-legged stool” being offered that
they like or trust. The first leg – enforcement – the administration has all
but sawed off. The second – increased admissions of extended family members and
workers – makes little sense with some 25 million Americans either unemployed
or relegated to part-time work. And the third – amnesty for millions of illegal
aliens – is anathema to their sense of justice and fair play.
As
Americans well know, declaring “Mission Accomplished” and actually
accomplishing a mission are two completely different things. When it comes to
enforcing immigration laws, the only message the public is receiving from this
administration is “Mission Aborted.”

Could Halt Obama’s Backdoor Amnesty Plan

Legislation has been introduced in Congress to stop
President Obama from further implementing a “backdoor amnesty” program that has
already suspended the deportation of thousands of illegal immigrants, including
those with criminal convictions.
The president’s stealth amnesty plan
was first exposed last year after internal Homeland Security documents were
obtained by the media. The first is a now-famous memo outlining a secret
backup plan to grant illegal immigrants amnesty in case Congress doesn’t pass
legislation to do it. Devised by high-ranking officials at U.S. Citizenship and
Immigration Services (USCIS), the plan calls for “meaningful immigration reform
absent legislative action” and “relief” to “reduce the threat of removal for
certain individuals present in the United States without proper authorization”
Subsequently, Texas’s largest newspaper exposed a secret
initiative that systematically cancels
pending deportations, even when illegal aliens have a criminal history. The
remarkable program stunned the legal profession and baffled immigration
attorneys who say the government bounced their clients’ removal even when
expulsion was virtually guaranteed.
Last month Obama implemented yet another system to spare a
myriad of illegal immigrants from removal by authorizing—and
encouraging—low-level field officers to block deportations by using an
outrageously broad list of exemptions. The unprecedented program will allow
droves of undocumented immigrants to remain in the U.S. by drastically
expanding factors that can be considered to exercise “prosecutorial
discretion.”
That’s when agencies get to decide to what degree they enforce certain laws
against particular individuals.
Apparently it was the icing on the cake that pushed several
lawmakers to craft legislation to end the madness. Introduced in the House this
week, the Hinder the
Administration’s Legalization Temptation Act (HALT Act) would eliminate the president’s widely
abused humanitarian parole, temporary protected status and deferred action to
spare illegal immigrants from deportation.
The measurer’s sponsor, Texas Congressman Lamar Smith,
claims the HALT Act will prevent Obama from abusing his authority to grant illegal
immigrants “mass administrative
amnesty,”
which he says is a rejection of Congress’ constitutional rights and shows utter
distain towards the wishes of the American people. Smith reminds the president
that Americans have called upon Congress to defeat several amnesty bills in
recent years.
Not surprisingly, the
open-borders movement has expressed outrage and the nation’s most powerful la
raza group quickly issued a statement denouncing the proposed law as a “cheap political stunt.” The
president should use his authority to suspend deportations of “people who pose
no risk to public safety” while Congress focuses on “real solutions” to fix the
nation’s immigration system, according to the National Council of La Raza
(NCLR).
Coincidentally, Obama
just spoke at the NCLR’s annual conference in Washington D.C. this week and
told the crowd that the idea of reforming the U.S. immigration system on his
own “is very tempting,” but
under the U.S. Constitution, he is unable to do so without Congress. He did
promise to enforce “flawed laws in the most humane and best possible way.”

I live in
California. If you were wondering what living in Obama's second term would be
like, wonder no longer. We in California are living there now.
California is a
one-party state dominated by a virulent Democrat Left enabled by a complicit
media where every agency of local, county, and state government is run by and
for the public employee unions. The unemployment rate is 12%.
California has more
folks on food stamps than any other state, has added so many benefits and
higher rates to Medicaid that we call it "Medi-Cal." Our K-12
schools have more administrators than teachers, with smaller classes but
lower test scores and higher dropout rates with twice the per-student budget

This week, the once
and current Gov. Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown had to confess that the
"balanced" state budget adopted five months ago was billions in the
red because actual tax revenues were billions lower than the airy-fairy
revenue estimates on which the balance was predicated.
After trimming
legislators' perks and reducing the number of cell phones provided to state
civil servants, the governor intoned that drastic budget reductions had
already hollowed out state programs for the needy, law enforcement and our
schoolchildren. California government needed more money.
Echoing the Occupy
movement, the governor proclaimed the rich must pay their fair share. Fair
share? The top 1% of California income earners currently pays 50% of the
state's income tax. California has seven income tax brackets. The top income
tax rate is 9.3%, which is slapped on the greedy rich earning at least
$47,056 a year. Income of more than $1 million pays the "millionaires'
and billionaires'" surcharge tax rate of 10.3%.
Brown's proposal
would add 2% for income over $250,000. A million- dollar income would then be
taxed at 12.3%. And that's just for the state. Brown also proposed a
one-half-cent sales tax increase, which would bring sales taxes (which vary
by county) up to 7.75% to as much as 10%. Both tax increases would be on the
ballot in 2012. The sales tax increase proposal immediately brought howls of
protest from the Left (of Brown!). Charlie Eaton, a sociology grad student at
UC Berkeley and leader of the UC Student-Workers Union, said, "We've
paid enough. It's time for millionaires to pay."
At least five other
ballot measures to raise taxes are circulating for signatures to get on the
2012 ballot in California . The governor's proposals are the most
conservative. The Obama way doesn't end with taxes.
The governor and
the state legislature continue to applaud the efforts of the California High
Speed Rail Authority to build a train connecting Los Angeles and San
Francisco . Even though the budget is three times the voter-approved amount,
and the first segment will only connect two small towns in the agricultural
Central Valley . But hey, if we build it, they will ride. And we don't want
to turn down the Obama bullet-train bucks Florida and other states rejected
because the operating costs would bankrupt them. Can't happen here because
we're already insolvent.
If we get into real
trouble with the train, we'll just bring in the Chinese. It worked with the
Bay Bridge reconstruction. After the 1989 earthquake, the bridge connecting
Oakland and San Francisco was rebuilt with steel made in China . Workers from
China too. Paid for with money borrowed from China . Makes perfect sense.
In California , we
hate the evil, greedy rich (except the rich in Hollywood , in sports, and in
drug dealing). But we love people who have broken into California to eat the
bounty created by the productive rich. Illegals get benefits from various
generous welfare programs, free medical care, free schools for their kids,
including meals, and of course, instate tuition rates and scholarships too.
Nothing's too good for our guests.
To forestall even a
hint of criticism of illegal immigration, the California Legislature is
considering a unilateral state amnesty. Democrat State Assemblyman Felipe
Fuentes has proposed an initiative that would bar deportation of illegals
from California . Interesting dilemma for Obama there. If immigration is
exclusively a federal matter, and Obama has sued four states for trying to
enforce federal immigration laws he won't enforce, what will the President do
to a California law that exempts California from federal immigration law?
California is also
near fulfilling the environmentalist dream of deindustrialization. After
driving out the old industrial base (auto and airplane assembly, for
example), air and water regulators and tax policies are now driving out the
high-tech, biotech and even Internet-based companies that were supposed to be
California's future. The California cap-and-trade tax on business in the name
of reducing CO2 makes our state the leader in wacky environmentalism and
guarantees a further job exodus from the state. Even green energy companies
can't do business in California . Solyndra went under, taking its taxpayer
loan guarantee with it.
No job is too small
to escape the regulators. The state has even banned weekend amateur gold
miners from the historic gold mining streams in the Sierra Nevada Mountains .
In fact, more and more of California 's public land is off-limits to
recreation by the people who paid for that land. Unless you're illegal. Then
you can clear the land, set up marijuana plantations at will, bring in
fertilizers that legal farmers can no longer use, exploit illegal farm
workers who live in hovels with no running water or sanitation, and protect
your investment with armed illegals carrying guns no California citizen is
allowed to own.
The rest of us only
found out about these plantations when the workers' open campfire started one
of those devastating fires that have killed hundreds of people and burned out
thousands of homes in California over the last decade.
It's often said
that whatever happens in California will soon happen in your state. You'd
better hope that's wrong.

I've been at the immigration reform and enforcement
table for about 20 years. I've worked with activists during all those years.
But last week, in Los Angeles, I had a first-time-ever experience at an
activist brain storming session.
Gathered for an update on Stop AB131, the petition
drive to gather signatures to force a ballot initiative as to whether the
California taxpayers should fund college grants to illegal aliens, I asked the
top activist leaders from Southern California how the signature drive was
going.
They started updating me with the positive response
from California residents who signed the petitions, but then admitted about
500,000 more signatures were still needed. When I said there was only a little
more than three weeks to go to meet the January 5th deadline, suddenly their
faces dropped at once, and the room went completely silent.
It was easy to read on each of their faces; the
task was nearly impossible! Without big money to pay signature gatherers or a
tsunami of petitions flooding in, the taxpayers of California will be forced to
give grant money to illegal aliens for college, on top of the $22 billion they
are spending annually in California to support the illegal alien population.
While all of our minds were racing and searching
for suggestions as to how to accomplish this daunting task of gathering
signatures, Lupe Moreno, long time Hispanic leader from Santa Ana, said
"Can we have a prayer?" Everyone agreed to pray.
As the prayer went around the table, people
expressed their sorrow for the lack of leadership in the State of California
and in the nation to protect the interest of American citizens, and asked for
divine guidance in helping them understand the harm their policies are
inflicting on millions of innocent people in the state. In all the years I have
worked on this issue, I had not witnessed the sort of sincere emotion that was
expressed in that room.

You see, the
politicians in California are happy to give money the state doesn't have to

are simply collateral damage for seeking and appealing to the illegal alien
lobby.
These activists in California have already learned
what the rest of the nation is about to learn. We the people. . . are the only
ones looking out for the best interest of American citizens. With few
exceptions, we have no national leadership on the issue of stopping the illegal
migration flow into our nation.
American citizenship or the benefits thereof have
become a commodity for politicians to pander and barter away. They will grant
de facto citizenship through sanctuary policies, in-state tuition,
non-compliance with Secure Communities, grants for college, etc., etc., etc.
President Obama and most the Republican presidential hopefuls are peddling
various versions of amnesty proposals if they are elected next year.
What do these politicians want in return? They are
hoping to leverage enough votes in key states to put them over the top in 2012,
no matter what it costs the American people. This is futures betting: The
politicians are gambling the nation's future in hopes of winning the next
election.
So while the
state can't afford to pay its bills or provide decent services to citizens,
these California activists watch their elected leaders lavish still more
benefits for people who don't have a legal right to be in the country. And
while their child might have to pay out-of-state tuition to go to college in
another state, thousands of illegal aliens are going to college at in-state
tuition rates in California that they are subsidizing.
In addition
they know that millions of other illegal alien parents are receiving food
stamps, Medicaid, housing assistance and dozens of other state and local
benefits for their American-born children, while they have to decide which
bills will be paid this month and which will have to wait.

Slow path to progress for U.S. immigrants
43% on
welfare after 20 years
Immigrants lag behind
native-born Americans on most measures of economic well-being — even those who
have been in the U.S. the longest, according to a report from the Center for Immigration
Studies, which argues that
full assimilation is a more complex task than overcoming language or cultural
differences.
The study, which
covers all immigrants, legal and illegal, and their U.S.-born children younger
than 18, found that immigrants tend to make economic progress by most measures
the longer they live in the U.S. but lag well behind native-born Americans on
factors such as poverty, health insurance coverage and homeownership.
The study, based on 2010 and 2011
census data, found that 43 percent of immigrants who have been in the U.S. at
least 20 years were using welfare benefits, a rate that is nearly twice as high
as native-born Americans and nearly 50 percent higher than recent immigrants.
The report was
released at a time when both major presidential candidates have backed policies
that would make it easier to immigrate legally and would boost the numbers of
people coming to the U.S.
Steven A. Camarota, the center’s research director and author of the
96-page study, said it shows that questions about the pros and cons of immigration
extend well beyond the sheer numbers and touch on the broader consequences of
assimilating a population defined by tougher socioeconomic challenges.
“Look, we know a lot
of these folks are going to be poor, we get it. But don’t tell the public it’s
all going great, which is the story line I think a lot of people want to
sell,” Mr. Camarota said. “There is progress over
time. Every measure shows improvement over time, but still, the situation does
not look like we’d like it to look, particularly for the less-educated. They
lag well behind natives even when they’ve been here for two decades, and that
is very disconcerting.”
Federal law requires
that the government deny immigrant visas to potential immigrants who are likely
to be unable to support themselves and thereby become public charges.
On Tuesday, a handful
of Republican senators wrote to the Homeland Security and State departments
asking them to explain why they don’t consider whether potential immigrants
would use many of the nearly 80 federal welfare programs when they evaluate
visa applications.
Neither department
responded to messages Tuesday seeking a response to the senators’ letter.
Expanding
legal immigration is a contentious issue for voters, the vast majority of whom
tell pollsters that they want the levels either retained or decreased.
But most politicians
want legal immigration expanded.
During his time in the U.S. Senate, Barack Obama backed
bills that would have dramatically boosted legal immigration, potentially by
hundreds of thousands a year. As president, he has called for the same thing.

“We need to provide our farms a legal
way to hire workers that they rely on, and a path for those workers to earn
legal status. And our laws should respect families following the rules —
reuniting them more quickly instead of splitting them apart,” Mr. Obama said
in a major speech on the subject in El Paso, Texas, in 2011.
His presumed
Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, in June called for increasing legal
immigration for students who study in high-tech fields and admitting unlimited
family members of those who hold green cards.
“Our immigration
system should help promote strong families as well — not keep them apart. Our
nation benefits when moms and dads and their kids are all living together under
the same roof,” Mr. Romney told the National Association of
Latino Elected and Appointed Officials.
Mr. Camarota’s report took a broad look at the
immigrant population and found that immigrants are contributing to major
changes in American society, including that one-fourth of public school
students now speak languages other than English at home.
It also found that
immigrants as a population lead complex economic lives that aren’t easily put
into one category or another.
Immigrants made up
more than half of all farmworkers, 41 percent of taxi drivers and 48 percent of
maids and housecleaners, but they also represented about one-third of all
computer programmers and 27 percent of doctors.
The statistics varied
greatly by geography. In Massachusetts, native-led households averaged $89,000
in income while immigrant households averaged $66,000.
In Virginia,
immigrant-led households averaged $93,000 in income, far outstripping native
households’ $80,000 average. Likewise, immigrant families averaged a larger tax
burden in Virginia — though they also had higher rates of use of welfare or
Medicaid.
The center found that use of public benefits
varied dramatically based on where immigrants originated.
Mexicans were most
likely to use means-tested benefit programs, with 57 percent, while 6 percent
of those from the United Kingdom did. The rate for native-born Americans is 23
percent.
Mr. Camarota said a key dividing line is
educational attainment. Immigrants who have been in the U.S. 20 years and who
have bachelor’s degrees or higher make slightly more than the average
native-born American. But immigrants with only high school educations make less
no matter how long they have been in the U.S.
“The fact is the
less-educated in particular — they don’t do well over time,” he said. “It’s not
reasonable to expect an immigrant who comes to America with only a high school
education to close the gap with the native-born.”
Scholars debate
whether the current wave of immigrants will assimilate differently from those
in the 1800s and at the start of the 20th century.
George Borjas, a Harvard University
professor, has argued that second-generation Americans — the children of
today’s immigrants — will fall behind in wages by about 10 percent by 2030.

But in “Assimilation
Tomorrow,” a report released in November, Dowell Myers and John Pitkin said
immigrants of the 1990s eventually will attain high rates of homeownership and
71 percent will become U.S. citizens by 2030.
Those authors said
immigrants were set back by the recent recession but were still on track to
follow the same assimilation path as previous waves of immigrants.

fruit farmer in California's central valley. He has employed immigrants, seen

powerful chapter here

trouble is, it's not what American citizens want. The

really tells it like it is.
This book is written from the viewpoint of someone
who actually lives with these
Mexican immigrants. The rich people who
want to use them in their businesses
for cheap labor don't live with them;
the liberal elites who push for them to
get amnesty don't live with them. (YOU WONT’ FIND A SINGLE BILLIONAIRE THAT DOES
NOT WANT OPEN BORDERS, AMNESTY, DREAM ACTS PAID FOR BY THE AMERICAN MIDDLE
CLASS TO SUBSIDIZE MISERABLE WAGES, AND NO E-VERIFY. NOT BILL GATES, WHO WANTS
OPEN BORDERS AMNESTY, NOR BILLIONAIRE MAYOR BLOOMBERG OF NEW YORK CITY, WHERE
MEX BILLIONAIRE CARLOS SLIM LIVES!) This guy lives among them, and knows the
problems first hand, and as I suspected, there are many, and they're not
pretty.
He writes very bluntly about the problems, but not
without sympathy for the
Mexican immigrants whose own country won't take
care of them. With all the new
books out and the discussions going on about legal
and illegal immigration, and
what the American people want, I'm hoping that
these problems will be solved.
This book is one of the best on the subject,
because it is written from a
viewpoint of personal experience.

Victor Hanson combines scholarship (Professor at
Cal State) with personal
experience (life long resident and farmer in
central CA. who has
Mexican-American family and friends) to present a
thoughtful look at the
illegal Mexican immigration crisis. Hanson
argues that the reason for this
crisis is that both ends of the
political spectrum have vested interests in
continuing the unabated entry of illegal
Mexicans. Republicans wish to placate
business interests with cheap labor and
Democrats hope for a future electoral
base. Hanson further
explains that this wave is not like the earlier waves of
Polish, Jewish, or Italian immigration which was of
a fixed duration and where
the connection of the new immigrant to the Homeland
was more thoroughly
severed.
This book is well written and to the point (approx.
140 pages). I have also
seen Victor Hanson on several political talk shows.
He is well spoken and mild
mannered which is a welcome relief from the
cacophonous diatribe we too often
get on cable news channels.

As one who shares the author's ethnic,cultural and
geographical heritage, I
thought Hanson did a marvelous job of assessing
California's major social
issue, and one of America's primary problems. Like
Hanson, I was born and
reared in Fresno County, albeit some 25 miles from
his native Selma. I can
attest to the accuracy of his description of Selma
and the Central Valley in
the 1950's.
As a child, my associates included Hispanics; as a
teenager working in the fig
and peach orchards, my fellow workers were
Hispanic. During my professional
career, I have hired and promoted many Hispanics.
Hanson's Scandinavian ancestors (from
Sweden) and mine (from Denmark) came to
America legally and without speaking
English, but they succeeded--without
bilingual classes, welfare, government
subsidies, or that phenomenon known as
"affirmative action", which is
being rapidly unmasked as nothing,
more or less, than "reverse
discrimination". Hanson deftly exposes
the race industry as an amalgam of organizations
and individuals who are quick
to attack the Anglo for any slight, either real or
imagined, but who, in the
long run, seem not to do much for those whom they
purport to serve.
As a criminologist, I am well aware of
the violence committed by Hispanic
Gangs, and the fact that those gangsters
who do not wind up in the morgue soon
become expensive inmates in our
overcrowded prison system, costing taxpayers
some $25k per year each. I
am equally aware of the many outstanding Hispanic
officers, prosecutors, and judges with whom I've
worked.
Hanson has eloquently described the
failure of our educational programs to work
toward an assimilated America, as well
as the failure of the"separatists" in the race industry. (THIS “SEPARATIST MOVEMENT IS REFERRED TO
AS M.E.Ch.A., WHICH IS PARTY OF LA RAZA “THE RACE”. THE TERRITORY THE CLAIM IS

The one failure which, to my surprise, he did not
identify is that of our elected
officials who establish public policy. When Hanson
and I were youngsters/young
men in the Central Valley, the politicians seemed
to act in the best interests
of their constituencies. Today,by and
large, our politicians have little
integrity, but rather pander incessantly
to special interests which, in turn,
provide them with campaign funds,
endorsements,and precinct workers.It is
common knowledge that, in Sacramento,
legislative votes are "for
sale" almost daily. (THE CA LEGISLATURE IS NOW INFESTED WITH LA
RAZA SUPREMACIST PUSHING FOR EXPANDED DREAM ACTS, NO E-VERIFY, NO IMPOUNDING OF ILLEGALS’ CARS IF CAUGHT
