ELAINE CHAO'S CORRUPTION - BUT IS SHE ANY MORE OF A SLUT FOR RED CHINA THAN THE BIDEN BOYS, JOE AND HUNTER? HOW ABOUT THE OLD WHORE FEINSTEIN???

The Transportation Department’s Inspector General made public on Wednesday a report that cites repeated examples of former Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao allegedly using her staff and her office to help benefit her family and their business operations and revealed that staff members at the agency had raised ethics concerns.

Elaine Chao is Sen. Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) wife, who notably resigned the day after the Capitol riot.

The inspector general’s investigation detailed a series of instances in which Elaine Chao reportedly directed her staff to spend federal government time and resources to help with matters related to a family shipping company and her father.

“A formal investigation into potential misuses of position was warranted,” Mitch Behm, the department’s deputy inspector general, said on Tuesday in a letter to House lawmakers, accompanying a 44-page report detailing the investigation and the findings of wrongdoing.

The report indicated “Chao had used her staff to make extensive arrangements in 2017 for the planned trip to China, which was canceled just before her planned departure after ethics concerns were raised.”

The Chao family company, Foremost Group, was responsible as of 2019 for a large portion of orders at one of China’s biggest state-funded shipyards and has secured long-term charters with a Chinese state-owned steelmaker, Breitbart News found. Foremost’s ships carry bulk cargo such as iron ore and coal, focusing on shipping those commodities to China.

The investigation noted the trip was scheduled to include stops at locations in China that received financial support from her family’s company and also a meeting with “top leaders” in China that was scheduled to include her father and sister but not other members of the Transportation Department staff.

The investigators also found that Chao repeatedly asked agency staff members to help “do chores for her father, including editing her father’s Wikipedia page, promoting his Chinese-language biography,” and directing two staff members from the transportation secretary’s office to send a copy of her father’s book “to a well-known CEO of a major U.S. corporation” to ask if he would write a foreword for the book.

Apparently, staff members for Elaine Chao’s office were assigned in 2017 to check with the Department of Homeland Security on “the status of a work permit application for a foreign student studying in the U.S. who had received a scholarship from a Chao family foundation,” the report said.

The student, according to the report, had interviewed Elaine Chao’s father, James Chao, at the New York headquarters of the family’s shipping company in order to share James Chao’s experience “with Chinese millennials.”

Transportation Department staff members were given the job of arranging details for James Chao’s trip to China in October 2017, including asking, through the State Department, for China’s transport ministry to arrange for two cars for the six-person delegation, which included Chao’s younger sister, Angela Chao, who had succeeded their father as head of the family shipping company, and Angela Chao’s husband, the venture capitalist Jim Breyer.

Elaine Chao’s trip to China that year was abruptly canceled after news organizations wondered about the makeup of Elaine Chao’s delegation, the New York Times wrote.

Breitbart News reported in 2019 that Chao and her husband, Mitch McConnell, have directly benefited from the Chao family business. As Breitbart News senior contributor Peter Schweizer recounts in his book Secret Empires, Chao’s father — Mitch McConnell’s father-in-law — gave the Washington power couple a “gift” (the term used on McConnell’s financial disclosure forms to report this transaction) of between $5 to $25 million in 2008.

According to the New York Post, the “gift” had a major impact on the couple’s net worth: “In 2004, current Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his wife, current U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, had an average net worth of $3.1 million. Ten years later, that number had increased to somewhere between $9.2 million and $36.5 million.”

As New York magazine noted, “in many of the videos James Chao brags about his daughter’s government work and contacts. In one video he describes talking with Trump on Air Force One. ‘The president spent several minutes with me,’ he said. ‘We were talking about business.’”

Washington Post Fact Checkers Called President Trump a Liar to Cover Up Biden’s Corruption

Did the Washington Post’s 30,573 false fact checks help rig the election for Biden?

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is an investigative journalist and writer focusing on the radical Left and Islamic terrorism.

Once upon a time, the media used fact checkers to check its own facts before publishing a story. And then the media stopped checking its facts and started smearing everyone else.

The media’s false claim that Russia had somehow rigged the 2016 election to help President Trump win with “disinformation” became the basis for a media movement pressuring Big Tech to let the media’s fact checking censors silence conservatives with their ‘fact checking’.

Even as the media discarded all of its remaining standards, it claimed truth as its standard.

“This is an apple. Some people might try and tell you that it’s a banana,” CNN lectured viewers. “They might scream banana, banana, banana over and over and over again."

At the Washington Post, which had declared war on President Trump early on, fact checking became its own industry. Glenn Kessler, the head of the Post’s fact checking team, and two junior members published a book last year titled, Donald Trump and His Assault on Truth. It was the last hurrah for the team which shut down its presidential fact checking operation in 2021

But Kessler and the Post continued touting its fake database claiming that President Trump had made “30,573 false or misleading claims” even while making it clear that the game had changed. When Joe Biden falsely claimed that there was no vaccine when he came into office, Kessler insisted that it was a “verbal stumble, a typical Biden gaffe”, but not false or a lie.

Whether it’s an apple or a banana, truth or a lie, is a matter of the media’s opinion and agenda.

But the Democrat media fact checking machine wasn’t just applying different standards, it was a key element of the effort to elect Biden by suppressing President Trump’s exposure of his corruption. Dig into the “30,573 false or misleading claims” around the election and you’ll find the Washington Post’s fact checkers working overtime to cover up Biden’s corrupt dealings while falsely repeating the old Democrat claims about President Trump and the 2016 election.

That’s why the David Horowitz Freedom Center dug into a sample of false Washington Post fact checks from before the election on November 1 that were used to rig the election.

"Joe Biden is a corrupt politician who sold out to... China... he's vice president, his son's like a human vacuum cleaner. He follows his father and he takes the scraps," President Trump had warned. "We're putting a corrupt man up for possibly being elected.”

"Without evidence, Trump has repeatedly claimed Biden is the head of an organized crime family and a corrupt politician," the Post's fact checkers complained. They falsely insisted that "no evidence has emerged of corruption and shady dealings" and that there was also no evidence that "Joe Biden was involved in his son’s business activities".

That was in November. The previous month had already exposed some of Hunter’s dirty dealings and connected them to Joe Biden via a mention of the “big guy” which Tony Bobulinski, the former CEO of Sinohawk Holdings, said was indeed a reference to the Democrat candidate.

The Washington Post was aware of the allegations, but chose to suppress them except when President Trump brought them up at the debate, when it went on the attack to suppress them.

Meanwhile its fact checkers falsely insisted that there was no evidence because they ignored it.

When the Post then fact checked President Trump specifically quoting the “big guy gets 10%” line, it dismissed it based on a claim by Biden, by his campaign spokesman, and assorted other media outlets operating in the same echo chamber without ever addressing Bobulinski’s claims.

“Then he gets $3.5 million from the mayor of Moscow's wife. 3.5 million. Well, gee, Hunter, what did you do? What did you do? You gave her some big advice, I guess, Hunter, right?” President Trump said.

The Post sicced its fact checkers to play spin doctor even though the information about the payment to Rosemont Seneca had appeared in the Senate Homeland Security Committee report, the Post fact check argued that the report “does not allege any illegality in the transaction” and quoted Hunter Biden’s lawyer denying any ties to Rosemont Seneca.

The Post’s fact checkers didn’t bother fact checking Hunter’s lawyer. Instead they used him as a source whose factual authority, unlike that of President Trump and his people, was unquestioned. The Biden fact checking exemption at the Post also applied to his son’s lawyer.

But Politico had reported in 2019 that Hunter and Kerry's stepson had "formed a variety of investment-focused firms under the name Rosemont Seneca." That reporting was never withdrawn even as the Post and media fact checks attacked President Trump for citing it.

Instead the Post and media fact checkers continued to attack President Trump’s exposure of Hunter Biden by citing as their definitive factual source… Hunter Biden’s lawyer.

The Post’s fact checkers falsely gave four pinocchios to an accusation by President Trump about Hunter Biden, “and then they go to China, he takes out $1.5 billion to manage.”

"The Washington Post Fact Checker has dismantled this conspiracy theory,” Biden’s campaign spokesman bragged, showing off the linkage between the campaign and its fact checking allies.

What was the Post’s factual source for “dismantling” the $1.5 billion figure? Hunter Biden’s lawyer. The Biden campaign was praising the Post for quoting Hunter Biden’s lawyer.

The source of the original figure was a 2014 article from the Wall Street Journal’s financial coverage with a quote mentioning that, “The fund—launched by Chinese asset managers Bohai Industrial Investment Fund Management Co. and Harvest Fund Management Co. alongside U.S. investment and advisory firms Rosemont Seneca Partners and Thornton Group LLC—started fundraising in the second quarter, and has raised its target to $1.5 billion.”

The Washington Post (and the Wall Street Journal) chose to ignore a direct quote from a spokesman at Bank of China International Holdings and instead touted Hunter’s lawyer.

That’s what fact checking at the Washington Post looks like.

The funniest of the Post’s fact checks followed President Trump’s exposure of Biden’s corruption in which he said that, “Because we have freedom of the press, but we don't. We have suppression by the press. It's suppression. And if anybody even mentions that story -- You don't see that story in The New York Times.” The Post hilariously retorted, “Most news organizations have standards and will not print allegations without attempting to confirm them first.”

That would come as real news because the Washington Post had spent 4 years falsely spreading disinformation alleging that President Trump was a Russian agent. Even in 2021, the Post is still running pieces falsely promoting claims that “Trump is a Kremlin asset” that conclude with, “We know that Trump was compromised, but we’re not sure exactly how”.

Those are the Post’s standards.

The Washington Post fact checked something that was a fact, protested that it won’t print allegations without confirming them, and then disproved that by printing the same bizarre nonsense about President Trump being a Kremlin asset without confirming it.

But while the Washington Post’s intrepid fact checkers were happy to rely on Hunter Biden’s lawyer to clear him, they were just as happy to keep on pushing the Russia hoax, launching fake fact checks of President Trump’s assertions that, “we were under investigation for three years. And it turned out to be a phony hoax” and “No collusion....They found no collusion”.

The Post has no response to this except to repeat the same false claims by Mueller’s team of Democrats that “the Russian government perceived it would benefit from a Trump presidency and worked to secure that outcome”. There is zero evidence that the Russian government either wanted to elect President Trump (Republicans are invariably harsher on foreign enemies than Democrats and that remained true under the Trump administration despite media smears). And there is even less evidence that the Russians did anything to “secure that outcome”.

The Democrat conspiracy theory about the election, falsely promoted by the media, relied on Russian Facebook ads, the vast majority of which targeted black people after the election.

But, like Biden and Hunter Biden’s lawyer, the Mueller Democrats mustn’t be fact checked.

Instead, the Washington Post fact check attacks President Trump for pointing out that the Mueller team was a partisan hack job.

"They had eighteen angry Democrat prosecutors. ... So we had 18 angry, crooked Democrats. You had Bob Mueller that didn't have a clue," President Trump argued. The Post’s fact checkers gave it 3 pinocchios because only "eleven out of 16 attorneys on Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team made public so far have contributed to Democrats" while "the other five have no record of political contributions, though the Daily Caller says 13 are registered Democrats."

Hunter Biden’s lawyer could not be reached for comment.

Finally, the Washington Post decided to fact check the following statement by President Trump.

“The media is fake and corrupt. Big tech controls the media, and they control the politicians."

The Washington Post is owned by Jeff Bezos who was at the time the CEO of Amazon. Big Tech literally owns the fact checkers who are fact checking the statement that they’re owned by Big Tech. And the Post’s fact checkers responded with, “This is loony conspiracy-theory stuff.”

Actually if the Post fact checkers wanted to see “loony conspiracy-theory stuff”, they could read their own paper which began hilariously claiming that their owner’s nude photos were hacked by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. If anyone doubted that Big Tech controls the Post, all they had to do was look at a paper that was trying to spin its owner’s embarrassing adultery scandal as an international conspiracy because it would help them keep their jobs at his newspaper.

“Joe Biden is bought and paid for by big tech, big media, and powerful specialist interests,” President Trump said. The Post’s fact checkers complained that, “Without evidence, Trump suggests Biden is guilty of corruption because he is raising so much more money”.

$2.6 million of Biden’s cash came from Amazon employees. The Big Tech company has also announced that it would suspend donations to Republicans who challenged Biden’s election, and hired the brother of one of Biden’s campaign chair to lobby for the monopoly.

There’s plenty of corruption in both the Biden camp and the Washington Post’s fact checkers.

The biggest contribution from Amazon to the Biden campaign may have come from the Washington Post. The tendentious lies and smears of its editorials posing as news and its spin posing as fact checking helped cover up Biden’s corruption while tearing down President Trump.

How much was that contribution to the Biden campaign worth? Let’s look at two numbers.

Jeff Bezos paid $250 million for the Washington Post. As I previously noted, “Amazon’s federal contract revenues rose from $200 million in 2014 to $2 billion now.” President Trump then played a role in denying Amazon the $10 billion military cloud contract it wanted. How much did the Washington Post’s fake fact checks put Amazon into a position to potentially reclaim it?

When the Washington Post’s hacks tout their false claim that President Trump had lied or misled 30,573 times, the relevant number is the $250 million or $10 billion behind that lie.

The Washington Post’s fact checks are audaciously dishonest, malicious, and untrustworthy.

“The final count. Never would have believed this number was possible when we started four years ago,” Glenn Kessler, the Post’s top fact checker tweeted, about the 30,573 number.

It’s easy to get to 30,573 when media hacks mangle the truth, treat political differences as lies, and use double standards to pursue the media’s agenda of attacking conservatives for the Left.

Now you know how much the Washington Post’s fake 30,573 fact checks are worth.

On Wednesday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Hannity,” Breitbart News senior contributor Peter Schweizer said he reads President Biden’s statements about his son Hunter’s deals as a declaration that “it’s going to be business as usual in the Biden administration as far as these deals are concerned.”

Schweizer said, “Joe Biden has said there are going to be no sketchy overseas deals during his second term. Here’s the problem: He does not believe that the early deals that Hunter was involved in, the China deal, Burisma, he’s never described those as sketchy. So, I read that as saying, it’s going to be business as usual in the Biden administration as far as these deals are concerned.”

Fitton: America Needs to Know the Truth About Biden Family’s Corruption

The Biden scandals didn’t disappear when Joe Biden entered the Oval Office, as I wrote in this op-ed for The Washington Times:

A president takes office amidst charges of family corruption and shady business dealings with a country connected to interfering in the very election that put him in the White House. Sound familiar?

The false narrative that Democrats concocted to hobble the Trump administration four years ago is now the real deal with Joe Biden and his family. And unlike President Trump, who faced unprecedented institutional resistance and Deep State resistance, President Biden can likely count on the Justice Department and the media to allow him to escape meaningful scrutiny.

Judicial Watch recently started a petition at Change.org asking the Department of Justice immediately to appoint a special counsel to investigate Biden family dealings in China, Ukraine and other countries. There is substantial evidence, from documents and witness statements, that the Biden family, including President Joe Biden, may have been involved in criminal activity with foreign entities tied to Ukraine and China. In just a few days the petition has garnered nearly 200,000 signatures.

Judicial Watch uncovered documents that show even as far back as the Obama administration Russia-linked media in Ukraine were “trolling” Joe Biden over “his son’s business.” Mr. Biden’s son Hunter has acknowledged that he is the target of an FBI criminal investigation. Any investigation should involve alleged money laundering, influence peddling and tax violations among other shady activities.

A special counsel is required because the Justice Department and its FBI are conflicted in investigating any matters that could implicate the president and/or his immediate family in criminal activity. As Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas said recently, “if there were ever circumstances that create a conflict of interest and call for a special counsel, that’s here.” Justice Department regulations that were abused to appoint a special counsel to harass then-President Trump actually do fairly apply to the Biden situation. A special counsel is required by Justice regulations when:

(a) That investigation or prosecution of that person or matter by a United States Attorney’s Office or litigating Division of the Department of Justice would present a conflict of interest for the Department or other extraordinary circumstances; and

(b) That under the circumstances, it would be in the public interest to appoint an outside Special Counsel to assume responsibility for the matter.

The matter is urgent. Americans just learned that communist China was actively involved in the 2020 presidential election. Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, in a letter transmitted to Congress, concluded that “based on all available sources of intelligence, with definitions consistently applied, and reached independent of political considerations or undue pressure — that the People’s Republic of China sought to influence the 2020 U.S. federal elections.”

Chinese efforts to interfere in the 2020 election might have been better known before election days but for Deep State resistance. Intelligence Community Ombudsman Barry Zulauf found that CIA analysts were reluctant to reveal China’s malign actions because they were opposed to the Trump administration, and were “saying in effect, I don’t want our intelligence used to support those policies.” In fact, “strong efforts” were made last summer to suppress analysts who wanted to expose the full range of Chinese efforts to swing the election to Mr. Biden.

We are already seeing China indirectly benefitting from Biden policies. Cancelling the Keystone XL pipeline will divert Canadian oil west to the petroleum-hungry People’s Republic. Re-entering the Paris Climate Agreement gives political cover to China’s excessively polluting dirty coal industry, in which Hunter Biden is heavily invested. Mr. Biden’s State Department on Day One removed a page on its web site that contained a comprehensive assessment of the threats China poses to the U.S. and its allies, and an emboldened Beijing slapped outrageous sanctions on outgoing Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and 27 other former Trump officials. Does China have corrupt leverage over President Biden?

Given the years of investigations costing millions of dollars to delve into fake Russia collusion accusations against Trump world, the American people deserve to know what China was up to with Joe Biden, especially when Beijing had already shelled out millions of dollars to Biden family members — including millions in set-asides for “the big guy.” What else is on that infamous Hunter Biden laptop? The conflicted Biden Justice Department cannot be trusted to engage in any meaningful oversight on this issue. We need a special counsel now.

In bipartisan vote: US House approves record $741 billion military spending bill

The overwhelming bipartisan vote by the House of Representatives Tuesday evening to approve the largest military budget in American history demonstrates the reality of capitalist politics. Democrats and Republicans are supposedly at each other’s throats over an array of social and political issues, but they are entirely in agreement on funding the world’s largest and most lethal military machine.

The House vote for the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) was by a massive margin, 335–78. Democrats supported passage by 195–37. Republicans supported passage by 140–40. Every leader of the House Democrats backed passage: Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Majority Whip James Clyburn. They were joined by the top Republicans: Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Minority Whip Steve Scalise and the ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, the co-sponsor of the massive bill, Mac Thornberry of Texas.

The margin was far more than the two-thirds required to override a threatened Trump veto, although it is not clear that Trump will actually follow up on his tweets demanding two changes in the bill, neither relevant to its basic purposes. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has already said the Senate will pass the NDAA in the next few days. The margin is likely to be even more decisive than in the House.

While rubber-stamping the largest-ever Pentagon budget, the House and Senate remain locked in a protracted stalemate which has blocked the payment of a single dollar of federal supplemental unemployment insurance since the benefit expired last July 31.

The $741 billion for the Pentagon is approximately six times as much as the $121 billion in unemployment benefits paid out to 60 million workers since the coronavirus pandemic struck.

The goal of the NDAA, according to its preamble, is to achieve “irreversible momentum in the implementation of the National Defense Strategy” spelled out by the Pentagon in 2018, which identified “strategic competition” with Russia and China, not terrorism, as the “preeminent challenge” of US military policy. This includes, according to the various subdivisions of the massive bill, achieving “Superiority in the Air”, “Superiority on the Seas,” “Superiority on the Land,” and, in keeping with the demands of Trump, “Superiority in Space.”

After three decades of US-led wars, the outbreak of a third world war, which would be fought with nuclear weapons, is an imminent and concrete danger.

It is not hard to imagine what the rest of the world is to think of this all-out US drive for military power “uber alles”: China, Russia and imperialist powers like Germany, Britain, France and Japan are all engaged in military build-ups to match that in America, bringing ever closer the danger of an uncontrolled military clash between great powers, most of them nuclear armed.

Well short of such an apocalypse, the arms race involves an unforgivable squandering of economic resources needed to meet social concerns such as education, health care, alleviating poverty and retirement security.

One of the largest single components of the Pentagon budget is Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO), funded to the tune of $69 billion. This is the spending for ongoing military operations where US forces are deployed: primarily Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, as well as the Persian Gulf, where vast naval and air assets are arrayed against Iran. The OCO also covers active drone missile warfare operations across Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.

Democratic and Republican leaders on the committees overseeing Pentagon policies and military budgets gave unanimous support to the NDAA, boasting that the military budget has passed Congress by huge majorities for 59 straight years, and the Fiscal 2021 budget will be number 60.

When it comes to the most critical institution of the capitalist state, there is not even a two-party system in America, there is only one party: the party of the military-intelligence apparatus, which is required both to assert US imperialist interests around the world and to defend the financial aristocracy against the looming threat of social disorder and class conflict at home.

This is because despite all its declarations, the Democratic Party is not a party of workers. It, as Biden’s transition team attests, is a party of Wall Street, big banks, Amazon, and the military-industrial complex.

Amazon is entangled not only with Wall Street, but also with the US military and intelligence apparatus. Amazon was awarded a $600 million contract with the CIA in 2013, followed by a $10 billion contract with the Department of Defense last year to move government data onto the cloud. Meanwhile, Amazon’s facial-identification software “Rekognition” is being marketed to federal and local police.

Decades of decaying capitalism have led to this accelerating divide. While the rich accumulate wealth with no restriction, workers’ wages and benefits have been under increasing attack. In 1979, 90 percent of the population took in 70 percent of the nation’s income. But, by 2017, that fell to only 61 percent.

Millionaires projected to own 46 percent of global private wealth by 2019...watch those numbers go up with Bidenomics!

While the wealth of the rich is growing at a breakneck pace, there is a stratification of growth within the super wealthy, skewed towards the very top.

At the end of 2014, millionaire households owned about 41 percent of global private wealth, according to BCG. This means that collectively these 17 million households owned roughly $67.24 trillion in liquid assets, or about $4 million per household.

By Gabriel Black

The massive increase in the value of the stock market, which only a small segment of the population participates in, means that the top 10 percent of the population controls 73 percent of all wealth in the United States. Just three men—Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates—had more wealth than the bottom half of America combined last year.

The father of US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin just completed the most expensive purchase of a living artist’s work in US history, spending over $91 million on a three-foot-tall metallic sculpture. Ken Griffin, the founder of hedge fund Citadel, recently dropped $238 million on a penthouse in New York City, the most expensive US home ever purchased. And Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, the world’s richest man, has invested $42 million in a 10,000-year clock  (BEZOS OWNS ABOUT $300 IN RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES HE CONSIDERS HIS HOMES THESE INCLUDE $135 MILLION MANSION IN BEVERLY HILLS, A $40 MILLION DOLLAR TOWNHOUSE IN D.C. AND $100 MILLION IN CONDOS IN NYC).

Amazon’s 25th anniversary: A conglomerate based on parasitism and exploitation

Last week, Amazon commemorated its 25th anniversary. From its beginnings in a garage in Seattle, Washington, Amazon has grown into a multinational technology conglomerate with a market capitalization of nearly one trillion dollars.

In 1994, future Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos left his job at hedge fund D.E. Shaw to get out in front of the possibilities opened up by the accelerating development of the internet, beginning with the modest idea of an online bookstore. Bezos went on to become the wealthiest man on the planet, his hoard by one estimate peaking at a record $157 billion before his assets were divided in a divorce earlier this year.

Now considered one of the “Big Four” technology monopolies alongside Apple, Google and Facebook, Amazon controls the largest marketplace on the Internet: Amazon.com. The conglomerate’s reach extends from Whole Foods Market, which Amazon purchased in 2017 for $13.4 billion, to consumer electronics such as the Kindle reader and the voice-controlled Alexa. Amazon subsidiary Kuiper Systems announced in April of this year that it will spend a decade launching 3,236 satellites into space to provide broadband internet.

Traditional book publishers were decimated by the arrival of Amazon, which aggressively pursued them, in the words of Bezos, “the way a cheetah would pursue a sickly gazelle.” Using its vast flows of cash, Amazon ruthlessly undercut its rivals, from neighborhood stores to diaper manufacturers, accepting losses in order to drive competitors out of its way. Meanwhile, Amazon demanded and obtained free money from state and local governments in the form of tax breaks and other concessions.

Amazon’s annual revenues reached $233 billion in 2018, on which the conglomerate is expected to pay zero federal income tax. To put this figure in perspective, these revenues are nearly at the level of the annual tax revenue of Russia, which amounted to $253.9 billion in US dollars in 2017. Amazon’s revenues are higher than the government revenues of Turkey ($173.9 billion), Austria ($197.8 billion), Poland ($90.8 billion) and Iran ($77.2 billion).

Nearly half of American households now have subscriptions to Amazon Prime. The click of a mouse on a personal computer, or the tap of a finger on a mobile device, now sets into motion the speedy delivery of commodities from around the world, or the instantaneous electronic transmission of a film, song or book. Behind these deceptively simple transactions lies Amazon’s vast and complex commercial, logistics, distribution and computing empire.

Promising advances have indeed been made in automation and artificial intelligence. These technological advances carry with them tremendous liberating potential for human civilization as a whole. Heavy and repetitive toil by humans can increasingly be mitigated by robots, and possibilities appear on the horizon for advanced levels of coordination and integration around the world, assisted by artificial intelligence.

But under capitalism, new advances in technology have made possible new techniques of exploitation. Amazon has become a watchword for a new kind of despotism in the workplace.

In Amazon “fulfillment centers,” workers are forbidden to carry cellphones or to talk to each other. They are searched coming in and out, and minute details of their activity throughout the workday are tracked. Amazon specializes in putting constant pressure on workers to move as fast as possible, with electronic devices constantly prompting and prodding them to complete the next task.

Workers are instructed to compete with each other to surpass each other’s rates, which they are admonished constitutes “fun.” Arbitrarily high rates are demanded, and then raised, and then raised again. A worker who takes a moment to rest, to drink water, or to go to the bathroom can be criticized for a diminished rate. The workers who are deemed too slow, or who simply tire out, are replaced.

Amazon is now the second-largest employer in the United States, and there are around 647,000 Amazon workers worldwide. Journalist John Cassidy, writing about Amazon in The New Yorker in 2015, commented: “Behind all the technological advances and product innovation, there is a good deal of old-fashioned labor discipline, wage repression, and exertion of management power.”

Over the past week, we published an article exposing the injury of 567 workers over a two-year period at Amazon’s DFW-7 fulfillment center near Fort Worth, Texas. In December of last year, the WSWS reported how Amazon had hired a private detective to spy on 27-year-old worker Michelle Quinones in an effort to block compensation for her injury.

Amazon has appeared in the “Dirty Dozen” list maintained by the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (National COSH) for two years in a row. The 2019 report highlights six worker deaths in seven months, 13 deaths since 2013, “a high incidence of suicide attempts, workers urinating in bottles and workers left without resources or income after on-the-job injuries.”

Amazon’s techniques are merely a refined expression of conditions being imposed on workers around the world. In March of this year, Ford Motor Company announced the hiring of its new chief financial officer, Tim Stone, who previously served as Amazon’s vice president of finance and the leader of the Amazon’s acquisition of Whole Foods. Stone was hired as Ford carries out brutal cost-cutting in the US, Europe and around the world.

There is no shortage of opposition among Amazon workers. On social media, current and former Amazon workers are contacting each other, looking for ways to fight back. In Poland, where Amazon workers make around $5 per hour, Amazon walked out of negotiations on July 2 with two unions over working conditions, setting the stage for a strike.

To fight for their interests, Amazon workers cannot allow their struggles to be corralled and smothered by the pro-capitalist trade unions, which are doing everything they can to block a fight against inequality and exploitation.

In 25 years, Amazon produced the biggest individual fortune in history, and it did so on the backs of hundreds of thousands of workers. Amazon’s trajectory represents an “accumulation of misery, corresponding with accumulation of capital.”

Not just Bezos, but many others have enriched themselves or stand to enrich themselves from Amazon’s rise. Wall Street has its fingers in the pie. The Vanguard Group currently owns $55 billion of Amazon stock, BlackRock owns $45 billion and FMR owns $30 billion.

The parasitic activities of Amazon, through which it has sought to appropriate for itself the surplus value accumulated by other companies, have been integrated with the financial parasitism of the American economy. Amazon’s own stock has been buoyed ever higher as part of the speculative mania on Wall Street.

In 2013, Bezos personally purchased, and now operates, the Washington Post, which has been a main media voice for the Democratic Party’s anti-Russia campaign and the overall interests of American imperialism.

The increasing integration of Amazon with the repressive apparatus of the state, while its tentacles stretch into every corner of society.

Amazon must be placed under public ownership and democratic control. It must be taken out of the hands of the financial oligarchy and transformed into a public utility. The technology and infrastructure behind Amazon’s meteoric trajectory and the biggest individual fortune in modern history must be turned towards the needs and aspirations of the world’s population as a whole.

This program can only be achieved through the mobilization of the working class on an international scale on the basis of a fight to overthrow the capitalist system and establish a democratically-controlled socialist economy, run on the basis of social need, not private profit.

The gains for employees are a novel pain for the investors and employers who have been able to hold down wages for decades because the federal government is trying to grow the economy via cheap-labor legal immigration.

“INVESTORS” HAVE AND WILL DESTROY THIS NATION IF IT WOULD IMPACT THE NEXT QUARTER’S EARNINGS!
