RASMUSSEN REPORT

45% in California Support DOJ Challenge of Arizona’s Immigration Law, 47% Opposed
Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Voters in California are almost evenly divided on whether or not they support the U.S. Department of Justice’s decision to challenge Arizona’s immigration law.
A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in the state finds that 45% agree with the Justice Department’s challenge of the recently enacted immigration law in Arizona. Slightly more (47%), however, disagree with the challenge.
This marks a sharp contrast to voters’ views nationwide. Nationally, voters by a two-to-one margin -- 56% to 28% -- oppose the U.S. Justice Department’s decision to challenge the legality of Arizona’s new immigration law in federal court.
Meanwhile, 53% of California voters favor an Arizona-like immigration law in their own state, lower than the national average. Thirty-nine percent (39%) oppose such a law in their own state.

The survey of 500 Likely Voters in California was conducted on July 12, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
A solid majority of Republicans disagree with the Justice Department challenge and favor an immigration law similar to Arizona’s in their own state, while a strong majority of Democrats take the opposing view on both issues. Voters not affiliated with either major political party are more evenly divided on these questions.
Sixty-eight percent (68%) of all voters in California favor a welcoming immigration policy that excludes national security threats, criminals and those who come here to live off the welfare system. Just 20% disagree with such a policy, and another 12% are not sure.
Although there is a clear partisan divide on the issues of adopting an Arizona-like immigration policy in California and the Justice Department challenge, strong majorities across the board support a welcoming immigration policy.
In the race for California’s next governor, Republican Meg Whitman and Democrat Jerry Brown remain virtually tied.
Incumbent Democrat Barbara Boxer continues to hold a modest lead on her Republican challenger Carly Fiorina in California’s white hot race for the U.S. Senate.
