For Ilhan Omar, It’s All About the Benjamins
But what are Pakistan and Qatar buying from her?

Back in February 2019, Ilhan Omar (D-Mogadishu) aroused fury and disgust by, as the Washington Post delicately put it, asserting that “the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, the influential lobbying group, is paying American politicians to take pro-Israel stances.” Omar herself put it more colorfully, saying that “it’s all about the benjamins, baby.” (Benjamins, kids, are hundred-dollar bills, so named after Benjamin Franklin, whose visage graced them before we all switched over to digital money we never see.) So now that it has come to light that Omar has been receiving a considerable number of benjamins of her own from the jihad terror-linked states of Qatar and Pakistan, her stance is clear: Omar never had a principled stance against foreign influence at all. Some benjamins from foreign entities are just fine.
Jewish Insider recently revealed that when Omar went to Qatar for the World Cup last November, “the trip was funded by the Qatari government, according to an annual House financial disclosure filed in May.” In keeping with Omar’s longstanding and well-established hatred of the Jewish state, Qatar was found to be behind statements from American universities that were hostile to Israel. Qatar also funds Hamas, al Qaeda and Hizballah.
Even worse, Qatar is, according to the National Interest, one of the “staunchest supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood.” Muslim Brotherhood organizations in the United States are dedicated, according to a captured internal document, to “eliminating and destroying Western civilization from within, and sabotaging its miserable house.”
Hey, what better way to carry out that sabotage than by placing an operative in the United States Congress? But Ilhan Omar couldn’t possibly be working on behalf of Muslim Brotherhood interests, could she? Oh, surely not! Apparently aware, however, of how bad all this would look, Omar had been decidedly cagey about who exactly funded her Qatar junket: “her office did not answer questions from The New York Times in December about the funding source after she had returned.”
There’s no getting around it now: “The new statement, which has not previously been reported, shows Qatar paid for the four-day visit to Doha that overlapped with the U.S. men’s team’s opening match against Wales. Both ‘food’ and ‘lodging’ were covered by the Gulf nation, the disclosure indicates.” What’s more, “the Qatari Embassy in Washington, D.C., confirmed it had paid for Omar’s visit to the Gulf kingdom last year.” A Qatari spokesperson admitted that Omar “accepted an invitation from the Embassy of Qatar to attend events in Doha in November 2022.”
As bad as this looks, it was all legal. Omar’s trip was “part of a program authorized under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act,” which “allows House members to take trips funded by foreign governments provided that the travel is later disclosed in their annual financial statements.” That’s swell, but Jewish Insider also points out that in contrast to her vociferous criticism of Israel, Omar “has been comparatively muted when it comes to raising concerns about Qatar itself,” despite (or because of?) its ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas.
And it isn’t just Qatar. Omar “also traveled to Pakistan, where she made a controversial visit to a disputed part of Kashmir that drew criticism from India. The six-day trip, which took place in April 2022, was funded by Pakistan’s government, according to her financial disclosure.” As Daniel Greenfield has reminded us, “the Pakistani government had harbored Osama bin Laden in one of its military towns,” and as always in such cases, it gets worse: “During her visit, Omar met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif who had initiated negotiations with Al Qaeda and offered to ‘reestablish normal relations as long as they do not conduct operations in Punjab.’ Pakistan’s former ambassador to the United States had claimed that Osama bin Laden had backed Sharif’s brother. Rep. Omar also met with former Prime Minister Imran Khan, nicknamed ‘Taliban Khan,’ who had referred to Bin Laden as a ‘martyr.’”
And so the question must be asked, although none of our woke and compromised “journalists” will ask it: what are Qatar and Pakistan getting for their money? Having received funding from two of the foremost exponents of the global jihad, is Ilhan Omar now representing the interests of that jihad in the Congress of the United States? Is she working for entities that seek the destruction of the nation she is supposed to be representing? If any other U.S. representative had received money from entities that were demonstrably hostile to the nation, there would have been an investigation, with the recipient facing expulsion from Congress. Why not in Omar’s case?

It’s an interesting claim.
Qatar is the key backer of the Muslim Brotherhood now, not to mention allegedly tied in with every Islamist terror group from Al Qaeda to the Taliban. There’s little doubt that Rep. Ilhan Omar is an enemy of the United States. However, it’s best to be wary of foreign intel that seems to tell you exactly what you want to hear. The Saudis are fighting Qatar and while they correctly identify Qatar’s role in Jihad, their own hands weren’t all that clean.
So take allegations like these with a grain of salt.
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-Minnesota-5th) was recruited by a foreign government, received funding from a foreign government, and passed sensitive information through intermediaries to Iran, a Florida court has been told, as The Jerusalem Post confirmed.
The claims came during testimony by Kuwati-born Canadian businessman Alan Bender, who was giving evidence in the trial of Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad al-Thani. The Qatari emir’s brother stands accused of ordering his American bodyguard to murder two people, and of holding an American citizen hostage. His deposition, obtained by Al Arabiya English, was authenticated by the attorney for the plaintiffs, according to the publication.
Speaking from Toronto by video link, Bender told the Florida District Court that he met with Qatar’s Secretary to the Emir for Security Affairs Mohammad bin Ahmed bin Abdullah al-Masnad and two other senior Qatari officials.
According to his sworn deposition, the three officials told him: “If it wasn’t for our cash, Ilhan Omar would be just another black Somali refugee in America collecting welfare and serving tables on weekends.”
Bender testified that the officials asked him to recruit American politicians and journalists as Qatari assets, and that when he objected, was told that several prominent figures were already on the payroll. Omar was described as the “jewel in the crown,” he said.
Qatar “recruited Ilhan Omar from even way before she thought about becoming a government official… They groomed her and arranged the foundation, the grounds, for her to get into politics way before she even showed interest. They convinced her,” he added.
Frankly, Qatar has much better jewels in its crown than a mere congresswoman.
Biden just elevated a Brookings Doha veteran to the closest thing to an ambassador to the “Palestinians”. Qatar asset Jamal Khashoggi became a martyr courtesy of the Washington Post. There are Senate members on both sides of the aisle who spew Qatari propaganda. And there’s been hardly a word of criticism of the Jihadist state from prominent figures in either party with the exception of Senator Ted Cruz or anyone in the media.
I recently ran a story about a much more credible account of how Qatar had spied on Rep. Diaz-Balart and it got almost no play.
Suggesting that Omar is Qatar’s crown jewel in D.C. is like claiming that Manhattan’s crown jewel is a Burger King.
That doesn’t mean that Qatar isn’t recruiting Americans and didn’t groom Omar. Certainly she’s tied in with some of their backed groups. I’m just saying it’s vastly underselling what Qatar has done.

Is Obama Behind Biden's Hostility To America?
In a now widely noted Tablet article, David Garrow pointed out Obama’s fantasies of sexual perversion with men. To that, AT’s Jack Cashill added the dishonesty in Obama’s autobiography regarding the question of his birth and his claim to being the author of his first book. What’s also missing from Obama biographies is his identification with Islam. Obama is, after all, the bearer of two Arabic names, with the second that of the Prophet Muhammed’s grandson.
In fact, Obama was not president more the ten minutes when he did a most common Islamic thing; during his first inaugural address, he slapped the Jews in the face but did it so subtly that few noticed.
When he was reprising the proud American cliché about being a nation of all religions and ethnicities, Obama did not use the common and accurate couplet “Judeo-Christian” to describe American culture. The first Americans were heavily “Old Testament” Christians whose social models were drawn from the Jewish Bible. One estimate is that a third of the laws in the Thirteen Colonies were directly lifted from it. During the Revolution, when the Continental Congress asked Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, and John Adams to design a seal for the new republic, one idea was a bas relief of Moses leading the Children of Israel to freedom.
Traditionally as well, in American communities with a Jewish presence, shopkeepers will decorate their display windows on one side with “Merry Christmas” and on the other “Happy Chanukah.”
But Obama said something very different: “We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, and nonbelievers…”
He effectively dispossessed the Jews from being the second-most important religious community in the country, demoting them to third place next to the Islamically-hated Hindus, who endured arguably the greatest massacres in history, greater than the Jewish Holocaust, at the hands of Muslims who overran the Indian subcontinent, killing an estimated 90 million of them over the centuries.
The next day, Obama’s first in the Oval Office, with the US economy a shambles after the 2008 crash, Obama didn’t first call a respected economist for advice. Instead, he called Mahmoud Abbas, partner and successor to Yasir Arafat, the most successful Jew-killer since Adolf Hitler. He also called two other Muslim state leaders and the smarmy Prime Minister of Israel and future jailbird for fraud Ehud Olmert.
Once in power, Obama ordered that government documents could no longer join the words “Islamic” and “terrorism” in the same phrase.
Three months in his presidency, Obama made his first foreign trip, not to ally Israel, but to Egypt, for a speech co-sponsored by Cairo University and Al-Azhar University, though the latter isn’t a university as people in the West know the term. For a thousand years, it was nothing but a seminary for aspiring Muslim priests. In the 1960s, Al-Azhar added a secular subject or two and started calling itself a “university,” but remains mostly a seminary and is the alma mater of many of the major Muslim terrorism-preaching clerics of the last century. Obama’s audience that day were Muslims for whom religious piety includes the glorious martyrdom of simultaneously committing suicide and murdering Jews.

In the audience were ten members of the Muslim Brotherhood. Indeed, “various Middle Eastern news sources report[ed] that the [Obama] administration insisted that at least 10 members of the Muslim Brotherhood be present.” The Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928 in reaction to Ataturk’s “Turkish nationalism” after the fall of the Muslim Caliphate, has never recognized the legitimacy of Egypt’s secular governments, and thousands of its members have spent time in Egyptian jails. Obama effectively bypassed the Egyptian national assembly and spoke under the auspices of the historic Muslim seminary preaching jihad.
His speech opened with a minute of “thank yous” to Al Azhar, Egypt and Cairo U, then elided into a formal address that began with “As-salaamu alaykum!”—Islam’s plagiarized version of the Hebrew shalom aleichem—and did so with proper pronunciation and cadence. His audience erupted in cheers and applause because his “affect” was “I am one of you.”
After all, Obama had two Muslim fathers (one biological, one adoptive), and spent some years as a boy in Indonesia. Although he first attended a Catholic school, he then switched to a government school, which in that country meant daily prayers. He is proud that, even as an adult, he can recite flawlessly the opening lines to the Muslim call to prayer.
During his speech, while Obama said, “I am a Christian,” he added, “I have known Islam on three continents before coming to the region where it was first revealed.” But no serious Christian believes the Koran was “revealed.” Catholicism does not even consider Islam a separate religion but, instead, as a heresy because the Koran doesn’t acknowledge Jesus’s divinity. In any case, that volume is largely a plagiarized version of Jewish Scripture, containing the stories of dozens of Biblical Jews, all of them altered and corrupted.
(When Muslims are asked to explain the discrepancies—with the Jewish versions having been written down some two thousand years before Muhammad was even born—Muslims say the Jews stole the stories from them. They say that when Jews say “Musa” brought down the Torah from Mt. Sinai, the Jews are lying because “Musa” really brought down the Koran, after which the evil Al-Yahud snatched it away and re-wrote it, making the Torah false. Sura 3:78)
Obama also said,
I made clear that America is not—and will never be—at war with Islam…The partnership between America and Islam must be based on what Islam is, not what it isn’t. And I consider it part of my responsibility as president of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam.
These are strange statements. The US, like all governments, engages with other nations’ governments, not religions. The US government has no relationship, for example, with India’s Jains or Japanese Shinto. And where is it written that an American president is “responsible for fighting against negative stereotypes of Islam”?
Moreover, what did Obama mean about the US being “at war” with Islam? Perhaps he was remembering that Islam sees itself at war with America because the US supports Israel, whose existence is an insult to Islam. Indeed, 9/11 can be described as the greatest “antisemitic” massacre since WWII, though most victims were not Jews. Fourteen months after the horror, Osama bin Ladin explained that the main reason for what he did on 9/11 was because America is his enemy for supporting Israel.
Seven months later, Fort Hood, a Muslim US Army officer massacred thirteen fellow officers and wounded thirty-three other soldiers while shouting “Allahu akbar!” Obama’s administration characterized this as “workplace violence,” as if there had been a dispute over who was next in line at the water cooler that got out of hand.
He also said at the UN, “The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam,” and elsewhere has said, “The Muslim call to prayer is one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.”
Obama also spent years in the church of Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who once invited Louis Farrakhan to deliver a sermon to his flock and receive a medal of honor; and then there is that photograph of a smiling Obama standing next to Louis Farrakhan that had been kept secret until after the former left office.
Benjamin Netanyahu, in his recently published autobiography, says a meeting he had with Obama ended with words that Netanyahu refused to quote directly but that were “threatening and vulgar,” perhaps in a class with (my words, not his) “Don’t f with me or I’ll cut your b-lls off.” I hope someday Israel’s prime minister reveals Obama’s exact, insulting words. Lastly, there was Obama’s so-called Iran Deal which supported Iran developing A-bombs after he had left office, the same Iran whose mullahs have publicly joked and dreamed of nuking the world’s only tiny, Jewish state.
Obama’s perverted sex fantasies may have prurient interest, but his love of Islam surely affected his policies. Moreover, given that many believe he is still in charge, he could be instructing the senile and stupid criminal Biden how to destroy America for the same reason al-Qaeda wanted to, because the Koran calls the Jews Islam’s greatest enemy (5:82) and the US is Israel’s life preserver.

Remember all those times that Ilhan Omar recited leftist platitudes about humanitarianism, equality, climate change, and “women’s” and “gay” rights? Yeah, turns out, she was only bluffing. (Not like we didn’t already know that.) From an article out last week at Jewish Insider:

The Qatari government has a well-established and less than reputable record when it comes time to human rights abuses, it’s oppressively patriarchal in its treatment of women and entirely conservative in its cultural and social approach to the gay population, and, according to Amnesty International, the regime’s attitudes towards “climate change” has also been a “failure.” But none of those things — despite Omar’s near-constant squawking from a high horse about how important these issues are — and I mean none, were enough to prohibit Squad member Ilhan Omar from betraying her “principles” for thirty pieces of silver, and accepting a first-class trip to live like royalty.
As the article also noted, Omar “has frequently voiced concern over the influence of foreign interests on American politics” — but apparently, it was more of a “rules for thee, but not for me” type of situation. Omar is recognized for her outspoken support for the Boycott, Divest, and Sanction Israel movement, and is one of the most consistent and shrillest voices against Justice Clarence Thomas, who at some point went on vacation with Harlan Crow, a Republican billionaire. Of the trip Omar said, “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Clarence Thomas needs to be impeached[.]”
Of course, the absurd hypocrisy is too lengthy to cover conclusively, but it should be mentioned that Crow is neither a government nor an agent of it, and Thomas was acting as private citizen, not politicking from his official position; that apparently isn’t the case with Omar, who met with Qatari officials while there.
What makes this story even more absurd though, is that the construction of the stadium and all the auxiliary infrastructure needed in preparation for the tournament was itself, rife with human rights violations; quite literally, the 2022 World Cup was a “blood” project.
Prior to the revelation that the Qatari government had been her sugar daddy, Omar was asked why she attended; to this she replied, “There are no perfect countries that have a perfect record.”
What a pleasant and uncontroversial way to describe Islamist patriarchy, gay-hatred, and slavery — only a Democrat!

Ilhan Omar Says ‘No Way in Hell’ Will She Attend Israeli President’s Speech to Congress
She only likes foreign leaders who support jihad.
It is no surprise that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Mogadishu), who has been harshly criticized for her Jew-hatred, would disdain to attend Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s speech to Congress, which is scheduled for this Wednesday. When asked if she was going, Omar shot back a peremptory, contemptuous response: “No way in hell. I didn’t even know he was coming.” It’s noteworthy, however, that she doesn’t have the same burning hatred for some of the world’s most notorious aiders and enablers of jihad violence and Sharia oppression of women and religious minorities.
The prospect of Herzog addressing Congress apparently enraged Omar. On Wednesday evening, she took to Twitter to deliver an all-caps rant: “WE SHOULD NOT BE INVITING THE PRESIDENT OF ISRAEL—A GOVERNMENT WHO UNDER ITS CURRENT PRIME MINISTER BARRED THE FIRST TWO MUSLIM WOMEN ELECTED TO CONGRESS FROM VISITING THE COUNTRY—TO GIVE A JOINT ADDRESS TO CONGRESS.” Calming down a bit, she added: “Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s address comes on behalf of the most right wing government in Israel’s history, at a time when the government is openly promising to ‘crush’ Palestinian hopes of statehood—essentially putting a nail in the coffin of peace and a two-state solution.” Omar, of course, did not mention that the Palestinian Arabs have been offered a state numerous times, beginning in 1948, and always rejected the offer, as it was predicated upon accepting the existence of the Jewish state.
It’s no surprise that Omar would be disingenuous regarding Israel and the Palestinian jihad. This is the individual who tweeted back in 2012: “Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.” The one who claimed that support for Israel in the United States was “all about the Benjamins baby,” and charged that the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee paid American politicians to support Israel.
Her rage over the alleged oppressiveness of the Israeli government does not carry over to opposition to actual tyrants. Benjamin Weingarten noted in the New York Post in 2020 that “in fall 2017, Omar, then a state representative, attended a closed meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. According to a report since deleted from a Somali-language periodical, Omar and the Islamist strongman discussed ‘issues involving Omar’s native Somalia and issues for Somalis in Minnesota. … The meeting ended with Erdogan asking Omar to voice her support for Turkey.’”
Weingarten points out that “a month later, Omar would take to Twitter to praise Turkey for providing airlifts for Somalis injured in a Mogadishu truck bombing.” He asks the questions that no one has ever asked Omar: “Why was this state representative meeting with the leader of an increasingly anti-American regime? With what authority was she negotiating Turkish-Somali relations or any foreign-relations matters?”
In July 2021, as the Taliban was poised to regain power in Afghanistan, Erdogan said that “Turkey has nothing that contradicts their beliefs.” Erdogan has also likened “Islamophobia,” a word that is used to refer both to vigilante attacks against innocent Muslims, which are never justified, and honest analysis of jihad terror, which is necessary, to a deadly virus. For her part, Omar has introduced a bill in Congress that would mandate the establishment of a State Department “Special Envoy for Monitoring and Combating Islamophobia.” This would further erode the freedom of speech at a time when the Biden regime is fighting it with everything it’s got.
In a similar vein, in April 2022, Omar visited Pakistan and made a point of visiting the country’s just-replaced Prime Minister Imran Khan, whose Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party proudly tweeted: “US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (@Ilhan) called on @ImranKhanPTI in Bani Gala. They discussed Islamophobia & related issues. Ilhan Omar expressed her admiration for Imran Khan and his work for Muslims globally.” Khan has been criticized for calling for jihad and inciting violence in India.
Ilhan Omar thus seems to have no problem with global leaders who promote and approve of jihad violence. Israel is the singular object of her ire, which in light of the fact that she is a hijab-wearing, Sharia-adherent Muslim, is no surprise. The Islamic holy book, the Qur’an, calls Jews the strongest of all people in enmity toward the Muslims (5:82) and contains an enormous number of other anti-Semitic passages. The Jews are said to fabricate things and falsely ascribe them to Allah (2:79; 3:75, 3:181) and claim that Allah’s power is limited (5:64). They disobey Allah and never observe his commands (5:13). They are portrayed as having a truly demonic desire to destroy people: they hide the truth and mislead people (3:78), wish evil upon people and trying to mislead them (2:109), and feel pain when others are happy or fortunate (3:120). They are under Allah’s curse (9:30), and Muslims should wage war against them and subjugate them under Islamic hegemony (9:29).
No one dares say that all this (and there is much more) is why Omar hates Israel so much. But what would she say, and what could she say, if she were asked what she thought of such passages?

Report: Iran May Demand Biden Free More Prisoners After $6 Billion Ransom Payment
According to Iranian state media, President Joe Biden’s lopsided hostage deal with Tehran includes both a $6 billion ransom payment and releasing five Iranians jailed in the United States for sanctions violations, in exchange for five American hostages to be released by Iran.
“The primary objective behind the prisoner exchange deal between Iran and the United States is to secure the release of our nationals who are currently imprisoned,” Kazen Gharibabadi, Secretary-General of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights, said on August 16.
The Biden White House has said very little on the record about the deal, but Voice of America News (VOA) on Thursday put together a list of 11 Iranians who might be released as part of the deal.
The list included both Iranians and Iranian American dual nationals:
Six of the identified individuals are Iranian American dual nationals: Manssor Arbabsiar, Niloufar “Nellie” Bahadorifar, Kambiz Attar Kashani, Behrouz Mokhtari, Reza Olangian and Erfan Salmanzadeh. Two of them are Iranians with U.S. permanent residency: Kaveh Lotfolah Afrasiabi and Amin Hasanzadeh. And three are Iranians with no legal status in the U.S.: Mehrdad Ansari, Reza Sarhangpour Kafrani and Malek Mohammad Balouchzehi.
Three of the 11 individuals are on supervised pretrial release: Afrasiabi, Hasanzadeh and Kafrani. Four are serving sentences in federal prisons: Ansari, Arbabsiar, Kashani and Olangian. Two are in post-sentencing detention awaiting transfer to federal prisons: Mokhtari and Salmanzadeh. Of the remaining two, Bahadorifar is on supervised post-sentencing release for planned medical treatments pending surrender to prison in October, while Balouchzehi is in federal detention pending sentencing in October.
Mokhtari checked a few boxes as a possible subject of Tehran’s interest: he was on supervised release from a three-year prison sentence in July when the FBI raided his house in Virginia and discovered he was planning to obtain a new passport and travel to Iran. That would have been a clear violation of his bond, so he was arrested again.
Three of the 11 people on VOA’s list were jailed on charges other than sanctions violations: Malek Mohammad Balouchezi is serving time for international drug trafficking, Manssor Arbabsiar allegedly plotted to murder Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States, and Erfan Salmanzadeh was “convicted of using a weapon of mass destruction to detonate an explosive at his Texas home.”
Balouchezi was busted in Nairobi in October 2021 after a worldwide sting operation led by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Prosecutors said he “sought to expand his significant drug trafficking operations by importing massive quantities of heroin into the United States.” He was convicted on charges of conspiring to import and distribute heroin in May 2023 and is scheduled to be sentenced in September. If Iran can secure his release as part of the Biden hostage deal, it would be an immense humiliation for the U.S. government.
Arbabsiar was arrested in September 2011 for his role in “a nefarious international plot concocted by members of the Iranian military to assassinate the Saudi Ambassador to the United States and as many innocent bystanders as necessary to get the job done,” as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara put it.
Arbabsiar allegedly worked with members of the Qods Force, Iran’s unit in charge of terrorism and destabilizing activities on foreign soil, to plan a restaurant bombing that would kill the Saudi ambassador. He hired an assassin for $1.5 million who turned out to be a confidential source for the DEA. When the ersatz hitman pointed out that a bomb attack would probably kill innocent bystanders, Arbabsiar allegedly replied, “They want that guy done. If the hundred go with him, f**k them.”
Salmanzadeh videotaped himself working on a plot to blow up Tascosa High School in Texas in July 2021.
“We are going to blast the school,” he said in Farsi in the video, proudly indicating an assortment of bombs and a suicide vest he had created. Fortunately, the only thing he managed to destroy was his Xbox.
Salmanzadeh’s neighbors complained about the noise when he began testing his handmade arsenal. His weapons used TATP, an extremely volatile home-brewed explosive. When the police raided his home, they found plane tickets to California dated for July 28, 2021, suggesting he planned to escape after detonating bombs at the school.
“Armed with internet research, this defendant was able to create homemade explosives capable of wreaking mass casualties – casualties he dreamed of inflicting on innocent high schoolers,” said U.S. Attorney Chad Meachem in December 2022, after Salmanzadeh pled guilty to attempting to detonate a weapon of mass destruction.
Salmanzadeh, a naturalized citizen of the United States who was born in Iran, was sentenced to over 11 years in federal prison in July 2023.
Nizar Zakka, president of Hostage Aid Worldwide (HAW), told VOA that Iran would probably avoid demanding the release of hardcore criminals like Balouchezi and Salmanzadeh, focusing instead on prisoners it argues were illegitimately convicted of violating sanctions.
Zakka also suspected Iran has not named the individuals it expects Biden to free because some of them are dual nationals who might not want to return to Iran.
Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) researcher Andrea Stricker agreed that Iran will want sanctions violators released because they “represent the nuts and bolts of the Iranian weapons system, so the regime tries to protect them.”
Stricker said it would be easier for Biden to release prisoners who are near the end of their sentences anyway, such as Mehrdad Ansari and Kambiz Attar Kashani, but she still opposed prisoner releases on principle, because it would undo the hard work of U.S. law enforcement and create an “equivalence” between Iranian criminal operatives and the Americans who were kidnapped on specious espionage charges and held prisoner by Tehran.
“Rather than encouraging further hostage-taking by swapping people and in effect paying a ransom, a U.S. administration should demand that no more hostage-taking occurs and threaten extremely negative consequences for Iran if it does,” Stricker advised.
